Pilgrims of Sabbocracy:
A Black Sabbath Mailing List - Issue #1242
Wednesday January 24, 2007
Please send list submissions to list@black-sabbath.com.

This Issue's Lyric:
"Oh no, here it comes again
Can't remember when we came so close to love before
Hold on, good things never last
Nothing's in the past, it always seems to come again"
(Neon Knights - Heaven & Hell 1980)
I rather like the appropriateness of these lyrics.

Well, things are happening. Tour dates are out, tickets have gone on sale
in Canada, and interviews are happening. The Dio Years CD has a release
date, we're a living band again!
That brings us to the issue of the name of the band. A lot of people have
asked me if I was going to cover this, as the band isn't technically "Black
Sabbath".
First off, I fully intend to support the tour like I've done the last
several. I will be posting ticket stub images, concert reviews, gig
pictures, etc. So if you have it, send it to me! I'll definitely use it.
I'm also particularly interested in tour advertisements that turn up in
places like the newspaper - if you do send me things, I prefer images taken
from a flatbed scanner for ticket stubs and tour ads, but I'll take what I
can get.
Now, about the name. I did an update to my timeline page a couple of days
ago to bring it up to speed with current events, and this is what I wrote
about the naming issue:
One other issue that Ronnie James Dio touched on in the Jan 19 Trunk
interview was the naming of the band. To paraphrase... part of the reason
they called this Heaven & Hell and not Black Sabbath was that they all felt
that Sabbath was "back together" for awhile now with Oz, and that since
they went into the hall of fame with that lineup, that that's the way
"Black Sabbath" will remain. I've said that for a few years now that we'd
likely never see another lineup change in Sabbath, and it looks like that's
coming to pass. While officially this project and band are called "Heaven
& Hell", that doesn't stop the rest of us from calling it what it is.
BLACK SABBATH. In fact, the video link here touches on some of Ronnie's
feelings on the naming of the project, even going so far to say that "it
doesn't much matter what we call it, people will call it what it is - Black
Sabbath with Dio". He's right. This is a fan website, and I'm calling it
"Black Sabbath", even though I know it formally (and presumably legally) it
is not really called that.
I've given some thought as to why it's not called "Black Sabbath", and I
have come up with a couple of thoughts (these are my own personal
speculation, I have no facts to back any of this up)...
1) When Ronnie & Tony first hooked up in 1979, it initially wasn't going to
be called Black Sabbath - they were going to go forward as another name
- this could be an attempt to recapture that "early feel" they had when
they first started working out.
2) This was an attempt to keep Bill Ward in the band. Bill's been on
record for a long time saying that he doesn't want to do Sabbath without
Ozzy. Now in 1994 when he came back, he had said that he was finally OK
with it, since at that time it appeared to him that Ozzy would never be
involved again. This could explain why Bill bailed out now. He was
back in Sabbath again from 1998 through 2005, a nice consecutive streak,
and going with Dio again in place of Ozzy might have brought back too
many bad feelings for him, so he decided against it. In the interest
of full disclosure, I wanted to point out that I do work for Bill Ward
doing his website, but this is my own personal speculation - I have not
asked him about this matter.
3) An attempt to deflect interference from Sharon Osbourne. Things didn't
go well from what I read on Ozzfest 2005, mostly stemming from the Iron
Maiden egg incident. I'd been hearing rumours that the rest of the Sabs
were fed up with her and Ozzy's "antics", and by not calling themselves
Black Sabbath, they immediately remove all interference that could come
from the Osbourne camp over the name. Now legally, Tony Iommi owns 100%
of Black Sabbath. He can do whatever the heck he wants. But it could
be a "I don't want to deal with the headaches".
4) They may finally have decided that "Black Sabbath" is put to rest given
the two Hall of Fame inductions.
Ultimately, they could revive their original name of "The Polka Tulk
Electric Blues Band", and it wouldn't matter. If it walks like a duck and
looks like a duck, it's a duck. This is Black Sabbath, no matter what the
heck they want to call it.
That's my thoughts on the matter. While technically and legally it isn't
Black Sabbath, IT'S BLACK SABBATH - HUZZAH!
Make sure to keep an eye on my Heaven & Hell Tour Dates page, and
especially my news page, where things will be happening. I've also started
working on securing copies of the Dio Years for a giveaway closer to
release date - more on that when I get that put together.

It goes without saying but I think it's great for the fans of Dio-era
Sabbath to see this happen with Heaven And Hell.
I hope Ozzy does do a great new album and go out solo and do an awesome
tour. I'm not sure if his health will allow extensive touring, as we've
seen so many shows cancelled or postponed in recent years due to Ozzy, not
to mention so many reports of his voice being shot, and witnessing Ozzy
struggle myself on a number of shows I attended.
As for talk about the setlist - I think Heaven and Hell should keep the
Ozzy era stuff out of it. Do we need to hear Iron Man or Paranoid again? If
they do any Ozzy era stuff, then I think it's only right to throw some Dio
solo tunes in there as well, and it would be cool to hear Iommi do "Last In
Line."
Here's some suggestions for a great setlist...
The Mob Rules
Children Of The Sea
Voodoo
Neon Knights
Computer God
Die Young
I
New song?
Time Machine
The Last In Line
Sign of the Southern Cross
Heaven And Hell

Hi guys,
Without wishing to turn the P of S listing into a one-to-one debating forum
I feel I must respond to Doug Roemer's posting in issue # 1240;
>"...far superior to the Roy Davies Rainbow book from the UK, which was a
>patchwork of plagerized material. Roy Davies stole quotes and information
>from magazines like Hit Parader and Kerrang! and, without listing any
>references in the back of the book, passed everything off as interviews he
>conducted himself"
I guess Doug is reading a different version to the book I wrote, as it
distinctly says in the Introduction that many of the quotes and extra
material have , and I quote
>"...been put together from a multitude of sources over a four-year period.
>These include press articles, video and TV, interviews, promotional
>material, etc. Of particular value were the archives of the former Ritchie
>Blackmore Appreciation Society magazine Stargazer, its successor the Deep
>Purple Appreciation Society's Darker Than Blue, the more recent but
>equally excellent More Black Than Purple publication and the many
>information forums, fan clubs, websites and societies past and present
>worldwide."
I have never (or would I ever) deliberately passed anything off as my
own. However as for book references, I can hold my hand up and say we
fouled up on that one. Without boring people with the details, suffice
to say corrupted word document files meant much of the acknowledgement
information (and quite a few scans of stuff like posters etc) destined
for the book got lost, and with impending print deadlines recovery was
not possible. Sadly Doug ( along with Joe Geesin and a few others )
had their contributions uncredited, so my sincere apologies for that.
This has been rectified for future re-prints.
>I naively posted the interview on the now-defunct website The Man on the
>Silver Mountain, and Mr. Davies ripped me off.
-See page 249 of the book- the website gets a full reference and
decription.
>{quote}There are scumbags like Roy Davies out there who will steal
>from you without a second thought {unquote}
-I guess I'm off the Xmas card list then Doug?
P.S. I do agree with Doug in fully recommending Martin Popoff's
'English Castle Magic' - and check out Jerry Bloom's Ritchie Blackmore
biography too.
Cheers
Roy Davies

i just wanted to say that i was at the very last show Dio and Iommi
ever played together at oakland ca nov 1992 dehumanizer tour.
I have dreamed that this lineup would re-unite. Dio, Iommi, Butler,
appice...] what a beast! That sound is so fat and heavy it makes me
goosebump just thinking about it.
All my sources say that Heaven and Hell WILL HAPPEN! If
so.........I`LL BE THE FIRST IN LINE! SEE YOU THERE!

well.....
I think its truly awesome that this version of SAB is
touring......after all its about seeing IOMMI and GEEZER
I wish Bill would drum but I believe he doesnt get along with
RJD.......anyone except VINNIE as I think he is a plodding
drummer........
Setlist.....I hope no OZZY stuff as DIO generally hacks the shit of
it. .....maybe some MARTIN ( TONY MARTIN
sang DIO stuff really kool) stuff and if not....only DIO-SABBATH
material would be really kool........anything off
of H & H......plus shitloads of Dehumanizer.....will be a kool
show.....hopefully, again I get to see those vaunted
IOMMI guitar-solos from those days.........
As for OZZY recording with them and making a new SABBATH album and
then touring......would be very kool and
overdue...........
Peace be with you all.....remember...love is life and hate is living
death......Smthrz

Right! Now, I'm officially pissed!!!!!!! At least, extremely
dissappointed! Obviously I missed something. What happened to
Bill?????? I have nothing against Vinnie at all, but dammit, I was
really looking forward to seeing Bill on the tour. Is this true, or
another erronious report. Where'd he go? I can't imagine why he
wouldn't want to do the tour, unless health problems have arisen
again. I certainly hope not.
One thing I do not want to hear on this tour is NO pre-Dio songs!
This should be ALL DIO - ALL NIGHT!!!! They have done the all Ozzy bit
to death. They have three albums out and two new songs coming out!
That's more than enough music to blow our heads off for one and a half
to two hours (2 hours....YES!). I'm not going to even try to imagine a
set list. I know what my ideal set would be, but it probably won't
happen. It's really a no lose scenario. Just end up with Mob Rules or
something besides Paranoid!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. Ozzy says there now coming
out with a new album??????? I bet the other guys didn't know about it.
They really don't need to get back with him. Everybody got what they
wanted out of it, now it's time to move on! And
the killer is............Motorhead's going to be with them. Oh my
God!!!! Shades of 94 and 95!!!!! Let's get this thing going!!

Anyone planning on going to the opening nite in NYC in March? Joe, are
you going to go?
I am toying with the idea...it would be terrific to be ther opening
nite. Of course I would have to pay for an airline ticket, and prob a
motel room. But I am thinking it would be worth it!
I am excited that it will primarilly all RJD era Sabbath
stuff...although I wouldn't mind if they played NIB or Black
Sabbath...I always liked Ronnie's versions of those tunes. But, I'll
settle (ha) for all RJD era tunes. Certainly wouldn't hurt my
feelings.
And I would hope they are able to stay getting along throughout the
tour to at least leave open the door for doing more stuff together
down the road. I dont knmow about everyone else, but I dont want
Geezer and Tony to give up their solo stuff or Ronnie to give up DIO.
I think asking the lads to that would be asking too much. not to
mention they will prob want to do something with Oz again. They may
have found the perfect formula this time by not calling it Black
Sabbath. By that I mean there wont be any ozzy issues surrounding
them this time. In the past Ozzy was like a haunting ghost. I dont
care if its 1980, 81 or 82 or 92 Ozzy was always there. So, by not
calling it Black Sabbath maybe it will satisfy everyone. Maybe.
Hopefully.
I am interested in Magica 2 and 3, but I hope Ronnie makes the tunes
more up tempo. It would help with their sales to be sure. If he were
able to carry around a big stage set up that would be great! I never
did get to see DIO back in their heighday.
Hopefully Ronnie and his cousin Rock get to the ELF reunion. Dont
have a clue when Ronnie would have time for that, but it would be
sweet.
Okay thats enough ranting on my part for now.
Have fun guys.

I noticed that the only opening band was DOWN. I am definately not
complaining. But, What happened to the rumour of MOTORHEAD? Since
Lemmy hasn't been to Canada in a bit we were really hoping to have him
back. I remember when he opened for SAB back in '94 (cross purposes)
and it was a perfect match. If you can get any more info on Lemmy it
would be much appreciated.
I am so happy that this is only weeks away. I never saw the '92 tour
(Dehumanizer) and this will definately make up for that. I am a really
big fan of the three DIO albums and oddly enough, I always considered
that lineup to be a different band. It seems to be all falling into
place. This is sooo COOL.
Hurry up guys.....HIT THE ROAD!!! We can't wait. I really hope they do
some DIO stuff.....kind of like what Gillan did on the '83 tour.

So does anyone know if the "Dio Years (Black Box 2)" box set is ever
going to come out, or is this single disc "best of" with 3 new tracks
all we're going to get? Are there going to be any other dates in the
US? $54-74 is pretty high for the NY show. Any indication there may
be other shows in this area?
[ Ed Note: Keep in mind, there never was an official announcement of
Black Box II (Dio Years) made. That was fan made stuff, something I
helped push a lot. Now having said that, I was told it would
happen, and it's been pushed back. Iommi's camp also made the
statement that they're "looking through the archives" for materials.
My new thinking is that there will be a Black Box II, but it will be
"everything but Ozzy", which would make it a larger box set. The
reason I think that might happen is that the Iommi camp might feel
that what was rumoured for Black Box III (everything other than Ozzy
& Dio) might not sell as well, so by putting all of the non Ozzy
stuff together in one box might help the overall sales as opposed to
splitting 'em apart into Black Box II & III. Again, this is my own
speculation, I have no facts to back this up. ]

Once again I am left stunned at the way Black Sabbath fans have been
mistreated. I have just got the Black Sabbath In Concert DVD. This is
the classic footage from 1970. I have it on tape but thought it would
be nice to get a Crisp DVD version. What a mistake. First off on the
DVD you have to put up with an MP logo in the corner. Why? It is a DVD
for goodness sake.
Then you notice the quality of the picture. It is dreadfully grainy. I
had read a review that knocked the picture quality and I remember
thinking well it well be a little rough it was 1970. However this DVD
is of lower generation than my off TV recording from about 86/87.
Since Anglia TV was able to show this program back then the masters
are still clearly about so once again someone in just making mugs of
us Black Sabbath fans :-(
I guess one consolation is the footage has at least been left in
original 4:3 format. I do feel sorry anyone that is new to this
footage and this is the only way they can get it. It is such great
material and such a shame.

Hello Joe, I know you're busy. I want you to know that you are doing an
awesome job with all of the new developments that have been going on with
Heaven and Hell.
This is more of a post for the newsletter; I forgot the address for it, so
please forgive me for sending this to your personal account.
Anyway, I was reading a review for Born Again on Wikipedia. A small section
regarding the album's production caught my eye.
It reads (quote) :
>The album was recorded during the summer of 1983 at The Manor Studio in
>Shipton-on-Cherwell, Oxfordshire, England. A major criticism of the album
>is its production, which Iommi and Gillan have both said is abysmal.
>Gillan went as far as blaming Butler, who co-produced the album, for the
>awful sound quality. ****Former Sabbath frontman Ozzy Osbourne said at the
>time that it was the best album Sabbath had made in years.[citation
>needed]**** (stars added for emphasis)
(end quote)
My question is, did Ozzy really think highly of this album? I truly find
this hard to believe. Is there any way to verify this statement?
Thank you,
Josh E.
[ Ed Note: I can't recall hearing that quote myself outside of that page,
no. Anyone? ]
