Subject: The Tour Has Started!
Let me say this, if you want to be completely surprised by the Heaven &
Hell tour when it comes to your town, then you'd better stop reading the
newsletter for awhile. I do not intend on censoring things like set lists,
pictures, how the gigs went, etc. So if you read this and get mad that
there's info in here you didn't want to see - tough. You were warned.
Now, having said that, there's several quick reviews in this issue of the
newsletter. Aside from that, there's a bunch of info up on the website:
1) Pictures from the gig:
http://www.black-sabbath.com/gallery_2/v/concertpics/2007tour/031107/2) Some more reviews:
http://www.black-sabbath.com/tourdates/2007/031107.htmlThere's also a cool article showing the stage setup apparently from the
company who built it:
http://www.highend.com/news_events/news/news_detail.asp?news_id=382As usual, if you are going to one fo the shows, and take pictures or would
like to put out a concert review, make sure and tell me about it!
Here was the set list from Vancouver. They were also going to play Lonely
is the Word as the first encore, but it got scrapped due to time
constraints with a curfew in Vancouver. This kind of thing is apparently
in a lot of gigs, but you don't usually run into it.
1. E5150
2. After All (The Dead)
3. Mob Rules
4. Children Of The Sea
5. Lady Evil
6. Ear in the Wall
7. I
8. Sign Of The Southern Cross
9. Voodoo
10. The Devil Cried
11. Drum Solo
12. Computer God
13. Falling Off The Edge Of The World
14. Shadow Of The Wind
15. Guitar Solo
16. Die Young
17. Heaven and Hell (extended)
18. Lonely is the Word (didn't happen)
19. Neon Knights (encore)
No idea if they're changing the set list around after some shows or not,
we'll have to see.

Subject: Seeing HH next month / Master of Insanity / Laney Amps
Hey everyone, I have taken a long break from the mailing list, now it is
time to jump back in! I am from the bay area in California, but can't wait
for Sabbath w/Dio (that is what it is) to come around, so I am going to
Vancouver to see them. I love the recording of Sabbath live in Boston on
the Dehumanizer tour, it sounds fantastic, and the keyboards on the goth
voice setting makes things extra dark and gloomy! I am bummed that there
will be no Geoff Nichols, it is a shame, since the guy contributed so much
material to the band, and basically got no credit.. Heard Quartz? You will
recognize parts of the song Heaven and Hell...
I remember reading "Never Say Die" about Sabbath after Ozzy, and recall
someone complaining that Sabbath used a track of his on Dehumanizer, and
that he never got credit. Low and behold, I got my hands on some MP3s that
have Master of Insanity played by a totally different group with slightly
different lyrics. When I say slightly, I mean it, maybe 6 or 7 words
changed during the verses, otherwise the whole song is identical. The
singer is a higher range singer, with cool character to his voice, and the
guitarist is a shredder in the Yngwie style. Was this an early incarnation
of GZR? I must confess, the vibe is slightly different, although the song
is basically dead the same. I love both versions now! Anyone know more
about this? I then have heard the "transistion" demo recording, where Dio
is singing the original lyrics when the song must had been first presented
to them. Anyone know why this guy that wrote the song got shafted? It is
obvious that no one in the band outside maybe Geezer had anything to do
with the writing of the song. Sabbath is one of my favorite bands (if not
#1), but I don't like people getting heisted for their efforts.
I needed another guitar amp like I need a few more holes in the head, but I
bought an old 80's Laney AOR 100. The thing sounds awesome! I know after
Iommi went from Orange amps to Marshall that he would still use Marshall a
lot, but would sometimes (mid career, not now with the endorsement) use
Laneys. My Laney is in great shape and the amp RIPS! It does sound quite
like a hotrodded JCM 800, with more bottom end. If you pull the bass know
out the bottom end is so HUGE it is unuseable! They used cheaper components
than Marshall, so maybe the amp doesn't last as long, but it still sounds
awesome.. You can pick these up for about $275-$450 all depending on shape,
etc. I wanted one when I saw the pic of Iommi with Gillen with one in the
NSD book.
ok, done with my novel now, see everyone at the H&H gigs!!!!

It goes without saying that I'm just delighted that this is happening.
The songs from the Dio-Sabbath era are just too good to be locked away, but
I'm not sure anyone could do the songs justice like the
Dio-Iommi-Butler-Appice lineup. Now I know that may come off as
narrow-minded, but even though I believe Martin and Gillan have made some
memorable and worthy interpretations I think the Dio-Sabbath lineup can
only delievr those songs with the power and glory as intended. Even Dio
solo really has not had a guitar player to do the Sabbath tunes true
justice.
What will come of this? Who knows... but I am excited to hear the
Hammersmith '81 live recording, and would love to see that Mob Rues Tour
Live Evil footage we've been teased with finally be released properly as it
should be.
Also, Sabbath fans in Europe, ...I would love to meet you when my band
Beyond Fallen comes to Europe this July. Email me private if you'd like to

Ok who's going to the March 30 NYC show?
Anyone coming from the Atlanta area? I am looking for travel itiniary
info. I found that it is prob cheaper to fly into Newark and stay right
there and just take the transit system into the city and just take a taxi
to the show. But, with regards to plane info, the cheapest so far I have
found is about $200 roundtrip. I can afford this, but would rather not pay
that much. If anyone from the Southeast region has diff info that is
cheaper please let me know.
I hate to go through priceline for fear they'll have me fly out of Atlanta
around 3 or 4 in the morning. I mean I suppse as long as I arrive in
Newark around check in time I'll be ok. I just dont want to be wating for
several hrs before I can check in. If its gonig to save me a bundle thats
one thing. But, I fear having to wait forever jsut to check in.
Also, I have an extra ticket if anyone is interested. It is row OO Orch 6
seat either 613 or 614. Any interested parties email me at
holydiver_1@yahoo.com with subj heading NYC Heaven and Hell show or
something to that affect.
Ok thats it for now.
Thanks folks.

I must be in the minority in thinking Sabbath improved when Ozzy left and
Dio replaced him, as I was never a fan of the Ozzy era Sabbath anyway but
that is a debate for another time.
With regard to Tony Martin I saw many gigs when he was in the band and
thought he was an outstanding singer who could easily sing songs from any
era (more so even than Ronnie Dio) who I think may have struggled on some
of the early songs. Everyone acclaims Heaven and Hell as a classic
masterpiece and I would not disagree but I regard Headless Cross as good if
not slightly better than Heaven and Hell and Tyr is easily a better album
as Mob Rules. I think band politics and financial gain were the reasons
behind Tony Martin's demise and whilst he may not have had the stage
presence of Ozzy or Dio he could certainly sing.
Finally, to stir things up I also thought Ray Gillan was very good, I saw
him 3 times on tour with Sabbath and a few times with Badlands and again
thought him to be a very gifted singer.

Subject: The Devil Cried
Hello Joe,
I have visited your site for several years now and I wanted to thank you
for all of your efforts in maintaining a quality site. I am obsessed with
all of the variations of the band. I've been a fan since about 1976 when I
was 17. Love the Tony Martin albums (except for Forbidden - I can't get
past the poor production). Tyr and Headless Cross are two of my favorites.
My favorite album of all time is Sabotoge.
I've seen Ozzy in concert 11 times going back to 1980 and have seen Black
Sabbath 3 times - all at Ozzfest (97 Metrodome, 99 and 2001 Wisconsin. All
have been phenomenal. I saw the Ozzy show in Winnipeg in 2004 where he
played for 2 hours and 42 minutes. UNBELIEVABLE! 16 ozzy songs and 8
Black Sabbath. I don't know what got into them that night but we were
blessed.
I wanted to say that I have tickets for the Heaven and Hell concert March
18 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg. Really excited! I heard The Devil Cried
a couple of nights ago and I am so thrilled with it. It is a pulverizing
tune and Dio sounds like he hasn't missed a beat from the Rainbow and
Sabbath days. Tony just never ceases to amaze. There is just no other
guitarist like him. He seems to hit the right notes for me.
Here's a true story. In 1980, I went into a record store and looked up the
Black Sabbath catalogue just to kill some time and see if perhaps there was
something new. I was flipping through the albums when I saw an album cover
I hadn't seen before. It was Heaven and Hell. I thought, OH MY GOD, a new
album! I looked at the back and saw the sketches of the band members. I
said to myself, yeap, there is Tony, and Geeger and I didn't quite
recognize Bill but I thought it sort of looked like him. Then I saw the
last drawing and I thought, Oh, the artist didn't do a very good job of
Ozzy. Then I saw the name - Ronnie James Dio? My first reaction was, Why
would Ozzy change his name?! My brain just wouldn't allow me to
contemplate the possibility that Ozzy wasn't in the band. A moment of
reality set in and I was devastated. I wondered if Ozzy died. Needless to
say, I purchased the album and was blown away by it. About a month later,
in the back of a magazine, I saw an ad for British import albums and saw
Blizzard of OZ by Ozzy. I was ecstatic that he was still around. I
immediately sent away for it but it took about 8 weeks to come in. In the
meantime, the North American version was released and I bought that. Now I
have both versions. The British one has the lyrics printed inside and the
vinyl is much thicker - better quality.
Thanks again for providing a site where I can get all of the new
information and archived stuff. I and many others appreciate it even if
you don't hear from us all of the time. I know you must be anxious to see
this Heaven and Hell tour. You should check it out in Montreal if you can
which is probably closest to you.
I still hold out hope for a Black Sabbath CD with Ozzy. Never Say Die, right?
Take Care,

that, PLEASE PLAY AT LEAST A BIT LONGER! I am not asking for anything
extreme like 2 and 1/2 hrs or anything. How about maybe 5 or ten more
minutes. Right around 2 hrs would be freakin GREAT! But, if they just got
it a it closer to 2 hrs I'd be happy. 1hr 45 is very good, but it would be
nice if they played just a bit more.
So, if there is anyone reading this that has the ears of the band members,

I now have tickets to see Heaven and Hell three times. NYC on 3/30;
Uncasville, CT, on 5/15; and Lowell, MA on 5/17 (which is general admission
on the floor). Words can't say how excited I am to see these guys three
more times. That third show will be one day short of my 25 year
anniversary of first seeing Sabbath on the Mob Rules tour in Providence on
5/18/1982, which happened to be the exact same line-up as this tour.
Coincidence? I think not.
I will of course be sending whatever pictures I can take along with my
review of each show to you, Joe, for your site.
I see you still show "unknown" for the opening band on 3/30. The Heaven
and Hell my space site lists that site as "An evening with Heaven and Hell"
which would make one think there was no opening band. I just checked
Megadeth's website, and the 3/30 show was not listed. I know that you will
post anything new and confirmed as soon as you know, but I was wondering if
anyone else on the mailing list had heard any "concrete rumors" about the
NYC show: will there be an opening band or not?
I assume that you will be posting reviews and set lists starting next week.
Can I also assume that I will have to go to the tour info pages rather than
the news section to see them like I have in the past? That way I can stay
on top of any news, but still not spoil the surprise of the set-list and
stage set until I see my first show.
That "behind the scenes" blog is already good; I can only imagine it
getting better as time passes and the tour gets under way.
Thanks again for maintaining my favorite web site (even above
harley-davidson.com, but don't tell my riding buddies; they don't
understand Sabbath, and that's just fine with me.),

Subject: Hello again from Australia - Ozzy,Geezer,Nicholls,Gruber - 1979 Info
Hello Joe,
You may remember me from the 'Seventh Star' album design essay I wrote and
sent to you a few years back. As always, I've been avidly reading your
Sabbath website, and still think it's the best website on the WWW!!
It's really exciting to read the Dio line-up is back together, but those
bastards better come down to Australia, or there will be HELL to pay!! WE
ARE DESPERATE. Tell Anthony Frank to not listen to anyone who tells him
he'll make no money here. It's gotten so bad for me as an Aussie Sabbath
fan that once, I dreamt that Tony Iommi along with a few old blokes in
hawaiian shirts, played an open-air gig outside of my local shopping centre
billed as the 'Tony Iommi Allstars'!!
I read recently your updated band personnel timeline, and i was
particularly interested in the 1979 period with the comings and goings of
Ozzy, Geezer, Nicholls, and Gruber. I know you wrote that "there's too many
conflicting stories about his [Ozzy's] departure", but I can't help but
take as gospel the information given in the Sabbath biography How Black was
Our Sabbath, written by two classic line-up Sabbath roadies, David Tangye
and Grahan Wright, published in 2004.
I won't go into too many details, but all you really need to read for this
info is in Chapter 20, 'The House on the Hill in Bel-End'. It gives a
definitive end date for Ozzy's career with Sabbath, which is Friday, 27
April 1979, whilst the band were rehearsing for their new album in a
Bel-Air mansion in Los Angeles. Dio joined the band a few days later, since
the Band had secretly arranged for Ronnie to join them. So, lets put Dio's
arrival at the end of April/start of May, 1979.
It seems Sabbath probably promised [as opposed to given] the job to Dio
around March 1979, but he actually was not a member of the band until early
May 1979, a few days after Ozzy physically and definitively left the Band.
Regarding the Butler/Nicholls/Gruber saga, you write that Geoff joined on
17 July, 1979, meaning that Geezer left say, late June, early July 1979.
Geoff indeed, initially joined as the Bass player, and apparently, as
you've written, wrote the bassline for the song 'Heaven and Hell'.
Now, you write that Sabbath began recording 'H&H' at Criteria Sudios in
Miami, Florida, on 1 October, 1979, meaning they left Los Angeles around 24
September, 1979, since, accoding to the book, Bill Ward drove cross-country
for 7 days from LA to Miami. So here is the question - when did Nicholls
give up the bass to Gruber for the keyboards? To answer, I theorise
Nicholls was bassist for long enough a time (let's say, from July to
September 1979) to write the basslines for all the songs bar 'Neon
Knights', before moving to Miami for recording.
It is a logical assumption that when the basic tracks were written and
rehearsed whilst still in LA, the Band believed that keyboard effects would
add to the sound. Nicholls put up his hand to write and record the
keyboards, and Dio called up his pal Craig Gruber to meet and join the Band
in Miami for the recording period, write bass for the final song and record
all the bass for the album. As we know, however, Geezer returned - two
weeks into the recording of 'Heaven and Hell' [see page 230] - wrote 'Neon
Knights', and recorded the album. We can assume, thus, that Craig Gruber
was in the band for around a fortnight, from 1 October until around 14
October, 1979 - which is probably the date when Geezer arrived in Miami and
rejoined Sabbath.
Of course, this theory - albeit a theory based around definite event dates,
given by yourself and the Book, and thus close to the truth - can only be
verified by contacting both Nicholls and Gruber seperately. The question
for Nicholls is, did he write the basslines for all the 'H&H' songs (bar
'Neon Knights'), and the question for Gruber is, did he join Sabbath whilst
they were still in Los Angeles? If Nicholls answers in the affirmative,
then my theory is probably correct - or close to it. If Gruber answers in
the affirmative, then he may very well, have written the bass lines for
some of the songs on 'H&H' - along with Nicholls and Butler.
I hope my research makes some sense and clears up a few things. Since you
started this website, however, so many Sabbath facts have been revealed,
and so many holes in the Band's history have been filled. I'm confident we
can nail this big question as well.
Cheers, and well done,
Antony Aristovoulou
P.S. Please read the album review for 'Never Say Die' which I wrote a
couple of years ago on

Just got my tickets for the Dallas stop on the new tour. Your website is
awesome... what a rush of memories. My sad story of this tour is as
follows:
I was 14 and living in Phoenix when the Mob Rules tour was scheduled to
come through town. My best friend and I were on cloud 9 getting to go to
this concert all by ourselves, unsupervised. I'm sure you noticed that the
4/11 show was cancelled and moved to 4/12. You may or may not know that the
reason was that 4/11 was Easter Sunday. There was a huge fuss by citizens
and city leaders and the gig was postponed until Monday 4/12. What I'm not
sure about is if the band was ordered to postpone by the city, or if the
boys volunteered to do it to quell the fuss. Unfortunately for us, my
mother (who was our ride to the coliseum) refused to drive us downtown on a
weeknight. Traffic and all, I guess. So, anyway, 25 years later I will
finally be able to see them live (even if we're all a little older). Thanks
for the website... Paul K.

Hey Joe:
Having seen a number of bands on a "reunion" type tour this one ranks the
highest, some of those other bands should really not be touring at all. The
Heaven and Hell reunion tour started off with a bang, big stage presence,
lots of energy and an audience starving for more.
Has it really been 13 years since these guys played together ? Musically
the band was tight, lights and sound all were beyond compare If anything
the vocals were a bit low in the mix.
I first saw Ronnie back with Rainbow in 76 at the Liverpool Empire, however
it was my first time seeing the other band members live, so at long long
last I finally got to to see the legendary Tony Iommi on stage, no
disappointments there at all.
I often feel honoured when a band starts or ends its tour in Vancouver, I
know its partly to do with geography, however I think there are a few
thousand other headbangers in Greater Vancouver waking up with smiles on
their faces this morning.

Hey homies, just a quick note. You must see Black Sabbath, er Heaven and
Hell, when they come to your town. I saw the band in a strange country on
the norther US border called Canada.
Anyway, the opener, DOWN was fantastic. I forgot how good those guys were!
Phil Anselmo seemed strangely coherant most of the show. They played one
song I did not recognize, and it was sweet.
Megadeth normally puts on a great sounding tight set. Last night, however,
they did not get their sound right until the last couple songs. They
played two new jams that sounded vintage 80s thrash metal. Their new disc
should mow.
Heaven and Hell. There must be some strange legalgism going on because the
band never said "Sabbath", and the crowd did not know what to chant. There
were some poseurs who chanted "Ozzy", but very few. I've cut fools for
less; they were lucky to be in the Canada.
The set-list was awesome. No suffering though War Pigs, Iron Man, and
Paranoid! Instead some gems like Falling Off the Edge of the World, Sign
of the Southern Cross, I, Computer God, and Die Young. There were three
new songs- all killer. The first newby "Ear on the Wall" is frantic. It
slays. The next two newbys are crushingly heavy slow numbers.
The stage set was a cross between a cathedral or at times a dungeon. Cool.
See the show while the tour lasts!
PS. Tony looked to really enjoying hisself. He was still stoic, however,
that metal wiggle that pulses through his body when the metal is at
critical was more apparant last nite.
Love,
Devastating Dave

Hey guys
Just got back from seeing Sabbath in Vancouver...great show, excellent gig
for the first night out. I travelled from Calgary to see the show, wasn't
going to miss the opening night of the four guys that I relied on to see me
through my teens. I am now 38 and still rocking, it was great to hear
tunes like "Lady Evil", "Falling off the edge of the world", and "Die
Young" live with the Sabs. Seen Dio and Vinnie solo many of times, just
never with Tony and Geezer...I left saying Ozzy who? The Dio years are the
best, musically and vocally. Dio brings so much to the band.
This was my first time seeing Sabbath since Seventh Star in Toronto with
WASP, and Tony is looking younger and fit and still powering out the power
cords.
This tour will only get better every date they play.
The only thing that would have made the night better, was splitting up
Heaven and Hell like in the old days.
Good show boys....

Subject: NYC show and dvd
I just wanted to drop a quick thought here.
I hope the boys do the dvd they were talking about doing in NYC. It would
be fitting since they are doing an extended set there.
I havent heard anything more about a new dvd, but....
I am going to the Cinci show instead of NYC. Just was going to be too
financially strenuous to make it to NYC. So, I opted for Cinci instead. I
can drive there.
Hope all who goes to a H & H show enjoys it!

[ Ed Note: Rumour mill says they're recording NYC for a DVD release later
in the year. That show is being billed as "A Night with Black Sabbath"
as there are no opening acts that night. ]
