First off, I'm sorry for neglecting the list for so long. I've been really
busy lately, and while I could have made time to do this, I didn't. Sorry
aout that folks. But I was keeping the website updated, which you all pay
attention to, right? smile

Anyway, one other thing.. June was the 15 year anniversary of this mailing
list. It's had three folks running it. Myself, Leonid Maravosky, and
Michael Sullivan. Unfortunately, the archives don't have any copies of
issues from the era when Lenoid ran the list. If you happen to have any,
drop me a line. Be interesting to see these "original" issues. When
Lenoid did the list, they weren't numbered. Mike took over in May 1993, he
started with "Issue #1". Lenoid himself didn't even remember how many
issues he did, nor the exact date, but it was some time in early June 1992.

I took over in December of 1996, and the first issue put out under my
control was Number #468. I've done it since. Things I've added over time
are the lyric quotes, as well as giving it an official name, too.

So Happy Belated Birthday, "Pilgrims of Sabboracy".

And thanks to Michael & Leonid - we wouldn't be here without them.

This is an interesting album. The two Ozzy songs are really good,
especially "Bombers". Also, the songs with Jack Bruce is good as well.

Hi Joe,

Longtime fan of the site. Thanks for keepin' it crankin! I got my
pre-ordered copy when it was released and you can add my # 2069 to your
list. My info is..

John Orach
Santa Barbara, CA

Also, as a side note you might find fun. My wife and I got married a month
ago. I'm 37, she's 36, and we've been together over 8 years. Part of our
attraction was our love of music. 70's, 80's, 90's ..... metal ..... pop
.... everything. At the Sabbath Reunion tour in 1999, before we were
dating....I went to a pay phone in the LA Forum, dialed her work voicmail,
and simply let her hear the bells toll............and Sabbath
play........she instantly knew who left the message. Anyhoo, flash forward
to our wedding. When we got engaged, I proposed the idea that instead of
assigning our guest to "table 1, table 2, table 3", let's assign the guest
to tables denoted by our favorite band's albums. We printed album covers
onto table tents at the tables. We had a table for Rush, Def Leppard, Asia,
Iron Maiden, Faith No More, Pink Floyd, etc...........and of course Black
Sabbath. Part of the fun was people had to figure our what album cover was
by who as we didn't print the name on the table tent. I've attached one of
the ones we're most proud of. Anyhoo, I'm rambling and you've got better
things to do.

Thanks again for your site. I really appreciate it!!!

Sincerely,
John

JOE!

I hope you are well. For what it's worth, here is the review of "Black

Black Rain Ozzy Osbourne (Epic) ****=BD

Osbourne's first solo album in five years is the first record he's ever
done sober, including the Sabbath canon. Interesting that it's the best,
heaviest thing he's done in decades aside from No More Tears. Longtime
guitarist Zakk Wylde co-wrote all tracks, as did Ozzy and producer Kevin
Churko, delivering better material than all-star collaborators did with
Ozzmosis and Down To Earth. The riffs are punishing and Churko's production
(in Ozzy's own studio) ensures maximum heaviosity. The ballads, obviously
written about Sharon, are heartfelt but too gummy for my liking. Keep to
the rockers and Black Rain is will hog your stereo all summer long.

Sweet Spots: title track, Countdown's Begun, The Almighty Dollar

Joe:

I think you may be mistaken about "Headless Cross" not being released on LP.

A former friend of mine used to manage a record shop in Indiana in the
1980s. When "Headless Cross" came out in the spring of 1989, he got an
advance copy (on cassette) and that's where I first heard it. When "HC"
was actually released, I bought it on cassette, since fewer releases were
being issued on vinyl, and at that time CD players were still fairly
expensive (I didn't get one until 1992). However, my friend's shop did
still carry some vinyl at that time, and I distinctly remember seeing an LP
of "Headless Cross" there, maybe two (his shop was one of the few
enlightened ones that carried all of Black Sabbath's material, rather than
just "Paranoid" and "We Sold Our Soul For Rock 'N Roll").

"The Eternal Idol" was definitely released on LP, because I had one. I
bought it the same day I bought Savatage's "Hall Of The Mountain King" in
late 1987.

I think that when "TYR" was released I may have seen an LP of that too, but
I can't be sure about that one.

I never saw "Dehumanizer" or anything later than that on vinyl. However, I
do still have a copy of "Cross Purposes Live" on VHS, with attendant CD.

I have all the Tony Martin-era releases on CD, and thank God I do, because
if the rumours I've heard are true, these are not available anymore. I
have never seen "Seventh Star" on domestic U.S. CD release, though I had it
on both LP and cassette. I know the CD I have is an import (it wasn't
cheap), probably British. I got that about 10 years ago.

I don't believe I've ever seen "Born Again" on CD either, other than my
copy, which is German; I got it in the early '90's (it wasn't cheap
either).

The next time I'm over in Canada I may ask at one of the music shops what
of the Sabbath catalogue they have available, since their releases tend to
run along similar lines as those of the UK and Europe (example: I bought a
remastered CD of Judas Priest's "Killing Machine" there, which is titled
"Hell Bent For Leather" here).

I think it's very, very sad that most of the post-"Mob Rules" releases seem
to be virtually unavailable in this country (it's even hard to find "Live
Evil").

It seems that we know about Ozzy's personal life more than Tony Iommi's.

However, I saw Gene Simmons' show SCHOOL OF ROCK when Tony Iommi was a
guest (clip can be found on youtube.com).

Tony admits to Gene that he has been married four times. I imagine
Toni-Marie's mother was wife #1, and Drain STH frontman Maria is wife #4.
Did Tony have children with all his wives? How many children does Tony
have? Why doesn't Tony Iommi help out his daughter's band Lunarmile? It
would be nice to have Lunarmile on Ozzfest, or open for Heaven & Hell.

What about Geezer's wife Gloria? Was she wife #1? What about Bill's
marriages? Whatever happened to Ozzy's first wife?

[ Ed Note: Bill's had a few marriages, but he's specifically asked me to
not put info about his family on the site, so consider this notice that I
will honor his request and censor information about that. As for
Lunarmile, don't discount the fact that they may not WANT the help. They
may see that as "we couldn't do it on our own, had to get Daddy
involved". Know what I mean? ]

G'day,

Firstly, love the website. It's been one of my fav's for about 7 years now

Now, just thought I might drop you a line to let you know that some scum is
selling thier copy of Live At Hammersmith on EBAY. They're from Burwood
East, Victoria, Australia but they're keeping thier ebay ID private.
They're selling it for $150AUS. I think it sucks that someone sell a
collectable for profit when there are plenty of us out there who would have
loved a copy but missed out. Prick!

And that's my two cents worth. Thanks for your time & keep up the great
work!

Hello,
Here is the set list of yesterday's show in Milano for the Gods Of Metal
festival

Start 9.40 / End 11.10

Intro/The Mob Rules
Children Of The Sea
I
Sign Of The Southern Cross
Voodoo
Drums solo
Computer God
Falling Off The Edge=85
Shadow Of The Wind
Guitar intro/Die Young
Heaven & hell
Encore: Neon Knights

It was a great show. A crowd of many thousand with a lot of young people.
Dio's voice is still so strong! Unfortunately the set list was shorter than
in the Usa as it was a festival co-headlined with Dream Theater. Great
versions of Children Of The Sea, Falling Off The Edge and a stunning Heaven
& Hell. But I found excellent also both tracks from Dehumaniser. Very good
sound, lights and stage. I hope that the band will come back in Europe in
winter for another tour woth more time to play.

In short: Copenhagen june 6th was fantastic! They played a venue that both
Sabbath and Dio had played many times before, but never together. Since
most of their European concerts is festivals - with shorter setlists - that
was probably the reason this concerts was a little short too - just over 90
minutes. These 90 minutes, however, was spent very, very well indeed.

Here=B4s the setlist.
1. The Mob Rules
2. Children Of The Sea
3. I
4. Sign Of The Southern Cross
5. Voodoo
6. drum solo / drums-keyboards
7. Computer God
8. Falling Off The Edge Of the World
9. Shadow Of The Wind
10. guitar-keyboards
11. Die Young
12. Heaven And Hell
13. Neon Knights (encore)

It seems, by the way, that the concerts listed here as unoffcial in Czech,
Slovakia and Hungary are now official: They were listed on the back of the
official tour t-shirts, anyways.

I saw you didn't have a set list for this evening, so I decided to give you
"mine". I'm sure all the songs they played are listed but I was pretty
drunk which means some of them are not in the right order.. 1 Turn up the
Night2 Voodoo3 Children of the Sea Then it gets blurred with the order..
The Sign of the Southern CrossDrum SoloIGuitar solo (followed by:)Die
YoungComputer GodShadow of the WindFalling off the Edge of the World And
then they ended with: 12 Heaven and Hell (extended)13 Neon Knights
Unfortunately, I have to start with a complaint. The sound was terrible!
You couldn't hear what was bass and what was noise.. But worst of all Dio's
voice wasn't loud enough. It was impossible to hear the words he was
singing if you didn't know them. And when one of the best voices in rock
history (maybe THE best) comes to Denmark I get disappointed when I can't
hear him and his incredible range as loud and clear as I had hoped. When
that's said it was an honour to experience this line-up of Black Sabbath
and a great opportunity for us who weren't born when those classics were
written. They made a show worth any single penny. And just to experience
Dio and Appice and re-experience Tony and Geezer was amazing. Thanks for a
great page.. I look for updates every time I turn on my computer.. Thumbs
up my boy.. Jonas Juul (Odense, Denmark)

[ Ed Note: Gah. Folks, please don't send me HTML mail. Makes it a big
pain to fix. When it turns out as a single paragraph like this, I don't
have the time to spend fixing it. ]

Hey, Joe!

There's been pleanty of reviews for Denver, so I'll spare you those
details... But I'd like to bring up something that I've not seen anyone
else touch on...

My credentials here...: I was at that show, in the very, very front, on
Tony's side of the stage, with a death grip on that front rail! :o)

The show seemed to have gone mostly well, but there was an issue, I
believe... It seemed to me that Tony was having some problems playing in
the right key... Then again, it could have just been because I was
directly in front of his amp stacks and couldn't hear much else... but it
REALLY sounded like his playing was off that night... I got to meet him,
Vinny, & Geeze later, and Vinny acted all pissed and yelled for people to
leave Tony alone, throwing his arms out, as if to make a human shield in
front of him, and said that he'd had a rough night... and Ronnie would not
leave the building, heh. I dunno if he had his own bus, but if he didn't,
then they left without him, haha.

At any rate, I noticed on a technical level that Tony just sounded off...
more often than not, it seemed like it was generally confined to his solos.
It appeared to me that he was trying to play the solos in the key he played
them on the albums. This was a problem, as for this show, and probably the
rest of the tour, at least to my ears, it sounded like he was playing his
guitars tuned to the key of D, and he'd end up playing his solos in Eb. I
just know that a lot of those sounds sounded heavier and deeper than they
did on the albums, and the solos kept sounding exactly like they did on the
albums, but only on about every other song, lol. The other half sounded
just as heavy as the rythm riffage was.

Was anybody else at the Broomfield/Denver show who may have caught this?
Like I said, it could have just been where I was standing in the venue...
But it really threw me. And add that to Vinny acting like Tony's personal
body-guard, and making the remark he did... Well, I just can't get past
this. Was Tony having an off-night? Was there one-less guitar tech after
that evening? Did they shoot the sound/moniter mix guy? Am I just hearing
things? As stated... if anyone else caught this... please let me know!
I'm tired of thinking I'm going any crazier than I aready am! ;o)'

Subject: 'Heaven & Hell' Concert Review - 5/14/07 - Times Union Center
- Albany, NY

Hi Joe:

In keeping with the format of some other reviews - here it goes - a review
the May 14th show at the Times Union Center in Albany, New York:

Set-list:

E5150
After All (The Dead)
The Mob Rules
Children Of The Sea
Lady Evil
I
The Sign Of The Southern Cross
Voodoo
The Devil Cried
Drum Solo
Computer God
Falling Off The Edge Of The World
Shadow Of The Wind
Guitar Intro
Die Young
Heaven and Hell (extended)
Neon Knights (encore)

Notes:

- After attending the Toronto show in March I was really looking
forward to seeing the Albany show, particularly because I would be joined
by my brother and both of my sons. My boys, Josh and Jake, appreciate many
forms of music, however they are - at heart - metalheads. As such, they
also both recognize that most of the bands they now listen to can all look
back to Tony Iommi (& Co.) as the true godfathers of the genre. I have
taken my boys to see Black Sabbath during two of the most recent Ozzfest
tours, however I have also impressed upon them the strength of Sabbath's
Dio years. (no pun intended) It is interesting to note how my youngest son,
as well as how many of his friends, are now learning about Dio through
films such as 'Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny' or 'Metal: A
Headbanger's Journey' or through bands like Killswitch Engage as they cover
Dio's solo work.

- While others may disagree, I thought the openers, Machine Head and
Megadeth, both put on great performances. Machine Head played a loud and
very metallic sounding, albeit brief, set. I got a kick out of the local
music critic's description the next day of the 'Cookie Monster' vocals.
Megadeth was again solid, and at times the crowd seemed to be more intense
during portions of their set than at any time during the entire evening. It
was funny to see the fan with a huge Megadeth tattoo on his leg going
spastic during their closer.

- As for the headliners, the start of the performance again stood as
one of the absolute highlights for me. As the impressive stage came into
view, and the video effects slowly built, the band members emerged, and the
overall effect was simply awesome. The set seemed somewhat smaller in
Albany from the Toronto show. I am not sure if the arena would not allow
for the complete/extended background set, or if the crew had simply
stripped-down the background for easier set-up and tear-down each night.
Perhaps there were simply fewer black drapes along the edges or sides of
the stage.

- As reported in earlier reviews, the crowd was super-loud and rowdy.
From our position a few rows directly in front of Dio and Iommi, it was
sometimes hard to hold one's position as the crowd continually pushed from
side-to-side. There was actually one occasion in which Security stopped all
action within the main mosh pit, and it was interesting to see some
particularly rowdy fans actually throwing fists at/around Security while
being pulled off the floor. At one point we also saw some guy rapidly
pulling his girlfriend away from the front of the stage while she was
screaming loudly. I am not sure if she became pushed-up against the stage,
grabbed or what. Then again, I can't image putting my wife near the front
of this stage and right next to a mosh pit either.

- As far as the individual performances, everyone was again at the top
of the game. In fact, while I was somewhat fearful that the band might be
locked into a play-it-by-numbers-routine by this point in the tour, I
actually found the opposite to be true. I thought the band played even more
intensely, looser when appropriate and with better interaction on this
night than they even did in Toronto. Dio's vocals are just stunning; very,
very impressive. Iommi and Butler were again focused, locked-in and tight
all night. Appice was again, if unspectacular/showy, solid - exactly in the
way you want him to be.

- Early on in the set, Dio made some kind of comment about being from
upstate New York and/or about it being good to be back in the upstate New
York area - where he has spent so much time previously. (I could not hear
his exact words.) This of course elicited a nice response from the crowd.
As I passed along to Joe Siegler via email, I have always had a nagginq
question about Dio's ties to the area - especially in regard to his wife
Wendy. My wife and I currently live about an hour north of Albany and about
ten minutes south of the resort communities of Lake George and Bolton
Landing. A number of years ago I believe I actually heard that Wendy was
originally from Bolton Landing. Could anyone confirm if this is true? It is
very funny to think of standing in the front rows seeing Ronnie perform on
those early Dio tours, playing at the Glens Falls Civic Center near there,
and now thinking that he may have been enjoying some 'home cooking' from a
member of Wendy's family just up the road. I know of Ronnie's New Hampshire
and western New York years, and I know Ronnie and Wendy's primary home now
is in Los Angeles, however perhaps they also had/still have a place in
upstate New York?

- As far as some of the enhancements since Toronto, as pointed-out in
other reviews it was nice to hear the distortion/echo/treatment on Dio's
voice at times, particularly as he introduces "Vinny Appice" in a booming
voice before the drum solo. Nice creepy effect. Perhaps I just didn't
notice it in Toronto, or perhaps it was not functioning or fully
functioning yet, however it was nice to see the long 'neon lights' on the
descended rigging during 'Neon Knights' the song. Personally, I have always
liked the little white spotlight shining directly down on Dio during the
song 'Heaven and Hell' as well as the bright red spotlight shining up under
Dio's face as he improvises between the voices from above and below
speaking to him. As the red light hit Ronnie's face, I turned to watch my
son mouth the word ... 'Cool.'

Personal song highlights: Once again I truly enjoyed hearing the song 'I,'
which just seems heavier and heavier over the years and has to rank as one
of Iommi's all-time heaviest riffs; 'Die Young;' and (especially) 'Falling
Off the Edge of the World' =85 the latter providing the absolute highlight
of the concert for me. When Tony goes from the quiet pause of the song into
the main riff, the surge of pleasure your mind feels is just too intense
for words. To echo the words of the fan next to me, obviously not expecting
to hear this song live ... "Oh my God. On my God. On my God..."

Personal song highlights (Part 2): While 'Voodoo' is a very good song - it
has never been one of my absolute favorites. On this night in Albany, Dio
went into a form of vocal improvising with Iommi near the end of the song
where he was almost scat-singing in a manner that was jaw-dropping. I have
never heard him sing that like, and the effect was just incredible. Iommi
held his own surprise on this evening. While 'Heaven and Hell' is one of my
absolute favorite songs (and in my opinion, one of the most underrated
'great' songs of the rock era), as Tony first started his solo, his playing
was very, for lack of a better word, 'noodle-y' and almost Jerry
Garcia-like in his approach. We know of his ability to play Jazz-like runs.
As another reviewer mentioned, and as on this night as well, the song
slowed for some Brian May-style harmonies with echoes. Of course, when the
song was allowed to build again - we got heavy.

Personal disappointment: I wish the band had played at least two more
songs. Again, no performance of 'Lonely Is The Word' (really a personal
fav). I guess we will have to wait for the Radio City Music Hall CD/DVD.

Final note: It almost goes without saying that we will all remember and
cherish this concert for the rest of our lives. To the band - thank you,
thank you for this tour. To Ronnie, Tony, Geezer and Vinny, we want to
thank you personally for all getting back together and giving us this
wonderful gift - the ability to see the four of you all perform together,
live on stage again. For the younger generation, this is a showcase that
music does not need to be pre-packaged or trivial. As someone recently
stated, the bulk of this particular band's work together really amounts to
some great, great songs. They deserve to be played live; they deserve to be
heard. Thank you for sharing them with us again. While we also love and
hope to hear more from your respective solo/other musical projects, we also
hope to hear more from Heaven & Hell in the future.

Subject: Concert Reviews

Hi, I found your site quite informative, & decided to add some reveiws...as
I've seen Sabbath quite a few times in the early 80's.

10/1/80 - International Amphitheater, Chicago.
I was a junior in high school, my buddy & I had tix from day one...we used
to sleep out for tix, when they went on sale. The crowd that night was very
rough, many bikers in attendance. We had 10th row, dead center. Black Cat
opened the night, & the lead guitarist was the black Rick Neilsen. Jumping
around, the baseball hat...pretty funny. BOC was next, on their Cultasaurus
Erectus Tour. Very solid. Sabbath was exceptionally heavy that night. I had
seen the Sabs w/Ozzy back in 1978 in Chicago, but this newer version was
unbelieveable. Great set list, etc.

12/20/81 - International Amphitheater, Chicago
My girlfriend (now wife) saw this show with me. The Chicago Bears clinched
the playoffs that day, & Dio mentioned it during the show. Sabbath was
unbelieveable. The song selection was great, & they were very tight. A very
entertaining show, in my opinion securing this version's legacy in the
history of Sabbath.

8/29/82 - Alpine Valley, East Troy, WI
Because I had seats for their show 2 days later, my girlfriend bowed out, &
I made the trip with a friend of mine. Sunday, driving in the rain all the
way up & back. Our seats were way back, & Sabbath's set had lost that rage
they had a year ago.

8/31/02 - Poplar Creek Music Theater, Hoffman Estates, IL
What a difference two days made! Still muggy & overcast from all the rain,
my girlfriend & I got their really early. It was Tuesday night, & Poplar
Creek was packed. We had great seats, one row in front of the mixing desk.
Sabbath put on one of the best shows I had seen this version play. Sabbath
was great...little did I know that we would be seeing the last Dio/Sabbath
show for some time. I'm sure they knew it, but they played flawlessly.

11/18/83 - UIC Pavillion, Chicago
This show was very weird. We had seats in the balcony. Quiet Riot's
popularity was busting out. It was Rudy Sarzo's birthday, & the members of
the band pied his face, as they took their final bow. It was strange seeing
the Sabs w/Gillian. The devil baby ran around waving his claws...& they
opened with Children of the grave. Bev Bevan on drums, Ian's conga drums
set up on the side of the stage...almost surreal. Great album, but Sabbath
sounded & seemed to be looking for an identity. The smoke on the water
encore was expected, & sounded great.

1) To contribute to the next issue, please send email to:
list@black-sabbath.com. If you send in a submission that goes
anywhere else besides this, it likely will not get used. Also,
make sure list submssions aren't CC'ed or BCC'ed. Those tend to
get deleted by by spam interceptor software. Make sure a list
submission is *TO* list@black-sabbath.com.

2) DO NOT SEND HTML MAIL TO THE LIST - it is likely to be deleted.
The reason is that I don't have the time to process most HTML mail,
as it comes through to me in a jumbled mess. Send me ASCII (aka
"regular") mail, PLEASE!!

3) Back issues of the newsletter are available in the "Newsletter Archives"
section of our online forums which are available here:

4) Special Delivery Notes:
a) Juno users: I know that your system has a 64k limit on messages.
I will try not to go over that limit with messages.
b) AOL users: Depending on how large a sablist msg is, your system
is going to download the first 2k of this email and then stop.
Download the file to your system and then open it using any word
processor.
