Subject: The Eternal Idol - A look Back

When the Seventh Star tour got started, it was by all accounts a mess.
Glenn Hughes was fired after just five dates for reasons that are an
article on their own.. In at the last second came (at that time) New Jersey
bar band singer Ray Gillen to take over the rest of the Seventh Star tour.
After that tour finished, the subject came to the next record, and probably
the most forgotten and arguably the most confusing period in the band's
history. Out of the dark year of 1987 came several recording studios, a few
record producers, a few vocalists, bassists.. you get the idea. But out of
this chaos came one of the more solid albums to ever carry the Black
Sabbath banner. That's the story of this article. Some facts about how the
music came to be birthed, some of my own recollections, and some input from
various band members about it. I did this once before in 2006 for the 20th
anniversary of Seventh Star, so I figured it was time again.

My 20th anniversary article on The Eternal Idol album is up on my website.
Go check it out here:

Hi Frank! Tony switched to a white SG which has a tremolo arm for those
two songs because both of those songs feature tremolo parts (i.e.
"divebomb" notes). The rest of the time, he uses an SG which has a
standard tailpiece, which is generally more stable/less wavering in tuning.

All the best,

So I noticed Joe pointed us to the discography link for the alternate track
listings for Bark at the Moon.

My CD which carries the catalog number CBS/Sony - ZK 38987 was bought in
New Zealand at some stage in the late 80's, though it was manufactured in
the US and it actually only has eight tracks.

1. Bark At The Moon
2. You're No Different
3. Now You See It (Now You Don't)
4. Rock 'n' Roll Rebel
5. Centre Of Eternity
6. So Tired
7. Slow Down
8. Waiting For Darkness

So there's your fourth version! Go figure.

Joe, Rob, and everybody else:

Hey guys, after reading Rob's post about Black Sabbath drummers I thought I
would write in to tell of a story that has intrigued me for almost 14
years, and many more of you may find equally interesting and just flat out
"cool."

If I remember the correct date, it was either February 23rd or February
24th, 1994 in Chicago during the Cross Purposes tour.? Now keep in mind, at
this juncture I was 16, and shamefully I had VERY LIMITED knowledge of
Black Sabbath at the time aside maybe just the name of the band itself and
a few select songs (I have come 500 miles since then, I am a fanatic of the
band now with its history and collectibles probably near to what Joe is).

Any ways, by fluke some buddies of mine had an extra ticket and I went
with.? Keep in mind again, at the time I didn't really know about the band
or any of the real members aside maybe Tony Iommi.? I owned no albums
except for maybe the $5.99 cut-out version of Black Sabbath's greatest
hits, and even with that cd I listened to maybe just Paranoid and Iron Man!

Now to my story.? This night forever changed my view on so many things and
got me started on the road to discovering Sabbath, its history, a lot of
other metal bands, and especially "that cool guy who was behind the drum
kit."

While at the time I didn't fully understand the content of the what songs
they were playing or the albums they came from, me being?a young
16-year-old kid will never forget the drum solo played by Bobby
Rondinelli.? From our vantage point, we could barely see him behind the
drum kit.? All I remember is him doing these awesome flashy moves along
with his solo (MUCH BETTER than what you see on the DVD version of Cross
Purposes live - maybe he changed up or shortened his solo a but when the
tour left the states, but this drum solo was long, flashier, and amazing!)
and one other thing...

During this solo, there had to be literally 10 or 12 young girls (and when
I say young, I don't mean 20's.? Some of them had on "class of '97" high
school jackets. so that would put some of them at about 14 or 15 years old,
others looked maybe between 16 or 18ish) slowly stripping and taking off
their clothes almost down to their underwear.? Now before anybody thinks
weird of me or what not or wants to call Chris Hansen of Dateline NBC, keep
in mind I was 16 at the time!? Everybody was going wild and wondering what
the heck was going on and/or why these girls (who probably had less
knowledge of Sabbath than I did at the time) were at this concert doing a
striptease act to Bobby Rondinelli's drum solo.? Within a few minutes,
there had to be 20 or so security people forcing these girls out (and most
of them took some guy with them, presumably a boyfriend or a male friend)
while they still didn't even have their tops back on yet!? The whole thing
was surreal, and I have yet to see anything even remotely similar at the
many concerts I have been to since (and seeing some woman in her 30s do
that doesn't come close.)

I remember leaving the show with my buddies and we were all talking about
it, and I still remember saying something to the effect that I didn't know
who that guy was who was doing the drumming, but he had to be "cool" and
that I had to find out everything I could about that guy, his past work,
this current Sabbath line-up, and just the band in general.? Almost 14
years later, here I am.? I remember that day like it was a WEEK AGO.? While
I had now way of knowing it at the time, I now look at some of the pieces
in my home of Bobby's kit that I bought from him, and I think back to that
day, and how I wish I was still that age and wish I knew as much about the
band and Rondinelli then as I knew now.?

All in all, it was a very great evening with some weird but fond memories.?
What were those chicks doing there?? Why were girls that young at a Sabbath
show, taking their clothes off to Rondinelli's solo?? I guess the end all
be all is that THAT was the starting point of how I really discovered
Sabbath, and my appreciation for a great Sabbath drummer in Bobby
Rondinelli!

Hi Marten,

The bootleg cover for the "Ozzy Meets The Priest" is taken from a drawing
by Michael Whelan. He is an SF & Fantasy artist and also did various
official album covers for bands like Meatloaf, Sepultura, Obituary & The
Jackson 5.

This bootleg depics the eagles that save Frodo & Sam at the end of "The
Lord Of The Rings trilogy".

Me Dear Sabbs Mates:

First, for Tyler; you should have gone to my H & H show at the Concord
Pavilion, Concord, Contra Costa County, SF Bay Area, California on
September 30th. Yeah, there were kids there, but seeing as how Alice
Cooper(!) was one of the openers, you certainly weren't going to get the
tiny little pukey punks like there was at your gig. Most of our crowd
there, were 45-Plussers, and it seemed that many of the kids there, were
there at Mommie's and Daddie's behest, so they weren't there to fuck up,
and fuck over others. If only, Tyler, we knew each other; we could have
gotten a big gang of 45-Plussers together, and 86'd the whole lot of little
shits!

The high point of my gig, was when they did "Die Young". Tone did this
really soaring, titanic, ultra-psychedelic solo intro, that must have
lasted TEN MINUTES! That took me a few circuits around our quadrant of the
galaxy, and had the mountains jump up and dance! Tony Iommi will not only
mercilessly kick the young punk's arses, he'll go a lot farther, and make
ketchup-soaked cottage cheese outta 'em, if you get my drift! He'll do it
every time, too! Next time Slipknot plays, be so nice to go make a mess out
that gig, Tyler. I know exactly how you feel.

Say Joe, in the Liner Notes Gratitudes, for Geezer, in "The Dio Years", did
I honest-to-goshers actually SEE YOUR NAME, there?? If so, well done, well
done, my friend!!

[ Ed Note: It's in 1998's Reunion, too. ]

One other thing, for you, Joe, and anyone else, and it's killin' me. I know
Denise Crosby of "Star Trek--The Next Generation" did the "No Stranger to
Love" vid, with Tone 'n' Glenn. But, who's that strapping young lad with
that bodacious mane of hair, in the "Feels Good to Me" vid? He looks like a
DEAD RINGER for David James Elliot (Captain Harmon Rabb, Jr., USN, from
CBS-TV's "JAG"), about six years before he pretend-practiced Naval law on
TV.

Some musings, here; if Tone and Ian get their Sabbs Edition together, might
they call themselves, "The Priest Disturbers", or the "Zeroed Heroes"? I
always thought if Tone and Catman Tony got their Sabbs Edition together,
"The Ancient Warriors", "Immaculate Deceptors", or "The Forbiddors", would
be cool.

Lastly, did you know that Elijah (Fodo Baggins) Wood is a Sabbs fanatic??

A Three-Fingered (A Little Bit Of??) Salute to you all!,
Stuart Wm. Anthony

> I'd love to hear from Sabbath fans whose drumming the liked, and why.

Honestly, I liked all of Black Sabbath's drummers, since I feel they each
brought their own sound to what they were doing, and contributed to the
overall Sabbath sound at the time.

Bill Ward and Vinny Appice have two very different backgrounds. Bill was
mostly inspired by big band drummers and other jazz drummers; Vinny is from
the streets of New York and he plays with real hard rock attitude. Though
this doesn't make Vinny's playing inferior. I just think this makes Vinny
a better "metal drummer". Eric Singer's somewhat in the same vein, but I'd
have to really sit down and analyze him to think of how the style truly
differs.

Bill doesn't seem to have the same stamina he used to, but I think that's
understandible in light of health problems, the other hardships he's had to
go through over the decades, plus his own personal musical refocus today on
singing and writing. Funny that Bill says he "has no memory" recording the
Heaven and Hell album. He does take pride for his effort on "Born Again"
though.

I've always heard mixed opinions on Cozy Powell, but personally I love his
playing. He's probably my favorite of the Black Sabbath drummers. There's
just something about his powerhouse hitting that grabs my attention,
especially on his Rainbow work too.

In response to the question "anyone know why Iommi switches guitars?"
('Iom= mi's guitar switch', issue #1256) it's (usually) because of
different tunin= gs. Let's not forget that Iommi essentially invented the
'heavy metal guita= r tone' by coming up with a variety of tunings. He
down-tuned his strings p= rimarily to ease the pain of playing after he had
his accident at work.

Any you guys that have this in their collection (as posted in the last
mailing)

You might want to strongly consider putting them on ebay. Brazilian
Pressing of these things go in the $300 to $600 range.

An actual UK version, should easily grab you around $500...if not more!!!!

Good luck!!!!

Dear Joe,

Talking about that Headless Cross release; Yes, I have the British release
on vinyl - it has exactly the same tracks as the CD. This Cd has
incidentally, been re-released over here on the Classic Rock magazine's
special label, so now a long-lost treasure is available again for the
youngsters to find in the shops.

I also have a very nice picture disc of the Tyr album, with a really rare
pair of bonus tracks, one of which is Tony Martyn doing an excellent job of
the classic Dio era track, Heaven and Hell. Sadly, the sound quality on the
two bonus tracks is not particularly good, but what the hell... Good to
have them, I reckon.

Oh yeah. The Headless cross track was also released on vinyl as a 12 inch
single over here in the UK (or Yuk, as we call it). Was it released as such
over in the states?

Alan Morgan, Swansea.
