Subject: Sabbath Drummers

Bill Ward in his prime Sabbath years 1970-1980 was the greatest hard rock
drummer of his era as his jazz / blues fusion with the powerhouse drumming
of Supernaut et al made for an amazing sound with his twin bass drums.
John Bonham was envious of his set up and would sit in with Sabbath and
jammed on some of the Vol. 4 material according to what I read about Bill.
Those 2 were in a class of their own. I was very forturnate to see the
Heaven and Hell tour and the Rainbow Down to Earth tour in Germany in 1980.
Bill and Cozy's solos were mind blowing and full of vigor. Cozy was
probably the fastest drummer I have ever seen and he truly lived up to the
moniker of "machine gun" drumming. Bonham, Ward and Powell played with the
greatest guitar players and made the best sounds and definitely had great
bass players with them: Geezer Butler, John Paul Jones and Roger Glover.
I never got to see John Bonham as we moved down to Italy when they came to
Germany and he died before Zeppelin would get to California in 1981. I
have seen Neil Peart, Alex Van Halen, Vinnie Appice, Bobby Rondinelli,
Tommy Aldridge, Tommy Lee (the best of his era!), Alan White and many
others but no one has matched the skills of Ward, Powell and Bonham in the
hard rock genre. Bill Bruford and Carl Palmer are two others that are
amazing, but I consider them in the progressive category. Joe, thanks for
keeping up the list and this last Heaven and Hell tour was a real gift for
the longtime fans. I wish this line up continued success and hope to see
them back on the road sometime later this year. BTW, Ozzy 's show @ San
Diego Sports Arena on 12.2.07 was solid and he had a lot of fun as his
birthday was at midnight that evening. He mentioned playing there almost
30 years ago with Van Halen, too. Van Halen played a killer set @ Cox
Arena on 11.25.07. Zakk Wylde's "Star Spangled Banner" interpretation is a
great salute to the troops in this long War on Terror. Happy New Year!

Joe,

Thanks for the great look back on Eternal Idol. It's a very solid disc. I
used to think that the one weakness was what I that Tony Martin seemed that
he was not particularly comfortable with his voice. I recall thinking at
the time that he was trying to sound like Dio. I did not learn until years
later, probably thanks to you and your web site, that Tony Martin actually
re-recorded Ray Gillen's vocals precisely and in a very short matter of
time. So he was imitating a previous Sabbath singer, I just had the wrong
one in mind. While I do enjoy the "alternate" recording with Ray Gillen, I
have really come to appreciate Eternal Idol, especially as it introduced us
to a very creative singer and writer whose contribution to the band is
greatly overlooked.

Not that I want to be a salesman for Tony Martin, but if there are others
who, like I had done, heard that disc and discounted Tony Martin because
he didn't sound as confident as other singers, I would recommend you give
Eternal Idol and all of the other Martin-era Sabbath discs another listen.
In fact, check out Martin's work outside of Sabbath. He is a solid and
dynamic singer with range and power. I am not a Martin-fanatic, and I,
like many Sabbath fans, prefer many of Ozzy's and Dio's songs to some of
Martin's, but I appreciate that his tenure with Sabbath lasted so long,
that I own many of his recordings, and that I got to see him sing with
Sabbath a number of times. OK: I'll get off my Martin soap-box.

While I cannot doubt what Bob Daisley says about the song "Ancient
Warrior", I had always agreed with your interpretation of the song's
meaning. The phrase "the king of all kings" has one significant and very
well-known meaning. I always thought that if the song was not literally
about Jesus Christ, there was certainly an intentional and obvious
reference, even though I don't typically think of Jesus as being a
"warrior" in the traditional sense. Even after all these years, I still
learn something from your site.

Thanks,
Eric

As far as I know, this LP was never released in the UK at all, it came out
on vinyl only in Brazil. Also Peter Eklund's excellent Black Sabbath
discography site at http://www.sabbath.se/ does not list other pressings
for this one.

The Brazilian copies of this are not that expensive -- but they're not
cheap either. The last copy sold on Ebay went for $133, but then another
copy didn't get any bidders with the $160 starting price.

Actually, that isn't a "4th version". It's the same exact track listing as
the original release here in the US. "Spiders" was only added on the US
releases starting with the 1995 remaster.

Hi Joe,

I've been enjoying your site since 1996, great work all of these years. I
had some questions/comments on some foreign releases. Curious if you knew
anything about them, and if they were things you'd list on the non official
discography sections.

The Other Side of Ozzy - Japanese Jet/Sony release. I saw this at a swap
meet in 1984, didn’t buy it and regretted it since then. The studio tracks
have eventually popped up elsewhere but not sure about the live ones.

Black Sabbath Attention! - A Junior High School friend's older brother
(these guys that got me into sabbath in the 1st place) had this since at
least 1975. This had Evil Woman on it when it was not available elsewhere.
Another friend actually found this at a Sears around 1979! This was later
released with a different cover, and a companion volume 2 with no unique
material around the late 70s'

Black Sabbath Greatest Hits - another friend bought this in 1980, nothing
unique here but the cover is cool

Thanks again for all the work that you put in, feel free to edit this as
necessary, its kind of sloppy.

Jim Foley

"Honestly, I liked all of Black Sabbath's drummers, since I feel they each
brought their own sound to what they were doing, and contributed to the
overall Sabbath sound at the time. =

Funny that Bill says he "has no memory" recording the Heaven and Hell
album. He does take pride for his effort on "Born Again= " though."

Thanks, Bill. That's what I hoped my post would do: remind people what a
great GROUP of drummers Sabbath has had during its history.

Bill Ward has a reason to be proud of his play on Born Again - it was
tremendous.

It saddens me to know Cozy Powell will never play on a Black sabbath record
again, but I hope the powers that be make it happen that Bill Ward will
play on a Black Sabbath record in the future. Last time he played on a
studio sabbath album was Born Again -1983. We're heading for the 25th
anniversary of that album.
