It is a Spanish/German (discs made in Spain, sleeves (=the box) made in
Germany) reissue set from 1984, consisting of the four first Sabbath
albums. It is not particularly rare - it sold for about $25 when it was on
Ebay the last time.

There are a few other LP box sets out there, as well as thousands of other
LP/CD/tape/whatever printings. Check out Peter Eklund's excellent site
http://www.sabbath.se/ for detailed discographies for non-Dio Sabbath eras.
Dio Sabbath is documented on my Dio pages.

Subject: Sab tributes

Fellow Sabbath Fans,

Just a chime in on Eric Goldberg's recent thread on #1260, concerning the
"Nativity in Black" Tribute disc: Personally, the three best tributes to a
Sabbath song are (in no particular order):

War Pigs by Sacred Reich
Hole in the Sky and Planet Caravan by Pantera

These songs are covered in a way that keeps in tact the spirit captured in
the Sab version, but have unmistakable etchings of the band melded into the
songs. Each one is worth checking, if you haven't done so already.

Keep on rockin',
Tom "The Rock-n-Roll Doctor" Eden

Subject: Hand of Doom 4LP Set & Vinyl Stuff

I went looking up this Hand of Doom 4LP Set online and I can see that it's
actually quite expensive. Released in 1984 according to Metal-Archives, and
contains a reissue of the first four Black Sabbath albums. Is the coverart
a black studded belt and a bloody dagger? Or is it something else? At the
time, it's probably a better deal at the time than the 1991 box set called
The Ozzy Osbourne Years, a 3CD set containing pretty much all the Ozzy
tracks you could cram on those 3 discs. But at any rate, definitely a
collectors item.

Speaking of which, I've been trying to get all of the Black Sabbath vinyls
I can find on LP for my collection. I managed to find every Dio album up to
and including Lock Up The Wolves except for Intermission. I cannot seem to
get my hands on the first Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow album, nor can I seem
to find Seventh Star or We Sold Our Souls For Rock And Roll on vinyl. Those
4 albums are the most illusive creatures. I guess my question is, for
anyone that knows, I have all Black Sabbath albums except the previously
mentioned ones, up to and including Headless Cross. Did Tyr or Dehumanizer
ever see release on LP in the states or another legit source? How about
Dio's Strange Highways? And I have never run across any of the singles or
special LPs, either, except for on eBay. Is this stuff pretty rare, or does
it just get snatched up really fast?

In response to this staement.

> "Dio finally weighs in as an equal member with Tony and Geezer

Dio was equal with Tony & Geezer back in late 79 & certainly 1980 when H&H came out. Even Bill said Ronnie would say things like; I need a chord like this when they were wroking in the studio. Poor Ronnie has gotten the shaft in the writing dept for decades. He even wrote some of the changes in Rainbow tunes, but in his own words as far as credit goes; so far, no luck.

Ritchie Blackmore had this to say; Ronnie knew exactly what to do with a
song, I'd come up with a riff, & he would have a song in no time. Not exact
quote, but as close as need be.

Now I'm not syaing he wrote riffs & Tony deserves less credit, just that
Ronnie only gets credit for lyrics & it's a short shrift sort of view.

Listen to his 1st 2 solo albums if anyone still doubts he needs Tony or
Ritchie to be able to deliver great songs.

My 2 cents. Steve.

Joe,

So glad to see the LIST is back up and running again. For us true fans, it
was far too long....but, glad to see your head is in a better space now.

First off: let's leave the name thing alone. Just a legal matter and now we
get to see Ozzy do his stuff (soon I hope) aswell as Dio do his stuff.

Any news at all about the new album? Recording?

This past tour was something I never thought I'd get to see: Dio with
Sabbath. I loved it so much, I went to see them 4 times. Toronto, London,
Albany & Hartford. I would have gone to more of them....but, I was running
out of money!

Has the Ozzy camp said anything about more Sabbath? Or is it far too early
for this kind of talk? I guess I am getting ahead of myself.

A better description of this LP box set, it says "Made in Germany" on the
back. The record label is "Victoria" It's basically the first 4 Sabbath
albums. The cover shows a picture of a bloody dagger, and a black studded
wrist band.

Maybe this addition info can help with somebody being able to provide =
additional info on this???

Thanks!

Subject: New to the list

Hi, I am new to the list but i certainly like all of the contributions. As
far as my opininions I have long been an Ozzy/ Sabbath fan and would not
listen to the new stuff.I got all excited when it was announced that Black
Sabbath was touring, they were playing in the area and one of our more
famous dj's referred to them as Sabbath. When the concert started to get
closer it was Heaven and Hell with Dio, I am a bit of a Dio fan so i was
interested. I did not go to the concert but eventually I bought the Heaven
and Hell dvd, I was really excited about this dvd and it made me
interested in the new Sabbath. I feel it is great music, it will never be
Ozzy but it is still great. Some bands have changed their members and
style, for example I am a big fan of Gabriel/Genisis, and some would say
that they like the Collins era better. It is only my opinion but I feel
that they sold out their music for more radio play. I feel that Sabbath
made a change but still kept their identity.... Thanks and keep up the
fantastic work, Regards Darrel.

Here's a few thoughts on the last digest:

Warmonger made a good point. After looking through the Sabbath history in
the 80s, I would be hard pressed to call it a 'band' with all the confusion
that was going on. Tony and Geoff must have needed a drink or two by the
90s. Good news is that some classic Metal was made with this confusion.
Also, he mentioned the Star of India demos...as much as I know they were
never meant to be labelled as Black Sabbath (and thus legitamizing one side
of a debate about whether a certain singer should be considered a vocalist
for the band) I feel that the demos and the resulting album "Seventh Star"
adds to the Black Sabbath history rather than takes away. I spent years
thinking "this is bound to be the weakest thing they've ever done under the
name" and avoided listening to it, but when I did it impressed me. If you
haven't heard it yet, give it a try.

Bobbycheetah touched upon the simularity of Don Dokken's voice to Tony
Martin's...glad to see I'm not going nuts. There were times when listening
to "Beast from the East" (Dokken live album) that I thought "Don could pull
off a decent cover of Headless Cross". Also, the main riff from "Into the
fire" always reminds me of Dio's "Rainbow in the Dark"...very simular chord
sequences. Bobby's points on the new BS material Ronnie and Tony wrote (it
came out on a BS album, it's listed as a BS single, so I call them BS
songs) I have to agree with, but then again I've found a lot of material
from Tony to leave me uninspired since Dehumanizer (except a few songs from
the 90s Sabbath albums and "Eighth Star/DEP sessions"). Whether he's trying
to compete with those who are making Doom riffs or not, he just needs to
remember not to push himself to make something to a demand. Riffs such as
"The Shining" and "Devil and Daughter" don't sound that heavy or doomy, but
they're chunky, catchy and slap your head and ask yourself why you didn't
come up with something so simple-but-effective.

Eric Goldberg asks "Is that bubbles I can hear on Type O Negative's version
of "Black Sabbath"? I'm only going by their "from the satanic perspective"
re-edit but I think so. Whether or not Hell is cool enough for a lake to
simmer rather than boil is a matter for a science debate not a Black
Sabbath post-box, so that's the end of my two cents on it.

Anyway, rather than reply to topics...I have a question. If you could remix
any Black Sabbath or hear a remix of it, what album would you choose? I was
thinking of this the other day, as I realised as much as I love "Headless
Cross", I would love to have heard the Guitar and the Bass using the same
mix and tones as the early 80s Sabbath albums, making the album a little
'dirtier' in sounding. Whether this would work with Cozy Powell's different
style of drumming compared to Bill Ward or Vinny Appice, I don't know. I
love the album and the songs, don't get me wrong, but the production has
always reminded me of Whitesnake's "1987" which is fine for Whitesnake, but
too 'clean' for Black Sabbath in my opinion. And if Ian Gillan says he's
heard a mix of "Born again" that's better than the CD...then I wanna hear
it! I'm playing my CD to death at the moment.

Chris 'Zoah' Williams

ps, I get to see Neil Murray and Don Airey in Michael Shenker's band soon.
In my own home city. Chuffed to bits. Might see of I can get Neil to sign
my copy of "Tyr"
