Subject: Black Sabbath Tributes
In terms of Black Sabbath tribute albums, I own three. Nativity in Black,
Nativity in Black II, and Evil Lives. I also own Bat Head Soup: A Tribute
to Ozzy Osbourne, and Holy Dio. Now, among those discs, I have to say that
Evil Lives contains the best Black Sabbath covers overall. The three best
covers among all those albums is:
1. Jag Panzer - Children of the Sea
2. Dan Swano / Peter Tagtgren - Country Girl
3. Bruce Dickinson w/ Godspeed - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Nativity in Black was way too many of the new-edge Ozzfest style bands that
I feel don't have the proper vibe and some just don't do the songs justice.
I also liked Evil Lives because it contained more than the standard Black
Sabbath fare you'd expect. It had songs like Glory Ride, Danger Zone, and
Disturbing The Priest, and even Falling Off The Edge of the World.

Ah the Black Sabbath list is good to see around again. Im sure we all got
plenty to say and for myself I will have more to say soon
But hells bells that doesn't mean anything. I am cranking my Sabbath when
ever I want. I am currently alternating from a mix I made for the trip to
Detroit in may last year for the concert and lately.........PLASTIC PLANET.
Thanks to the band and everyone involved. I wouldn't be here if Black
Sabbath did not exist. Yes that's true!

No, you're not going nuts!
You're the second person in the 20+ years since "The Eternal Idol" came out
that I've heard make a Martin/Dokken comparison.
When the album first came out, my friend who ran a record (as in LP!) store
phoned me about the new album. He said, "it's really good...the new singer
sounds like Dio sometimes and at other times like Don Dokken."
To my ears, though, about the only time Tony comes to sounding like Don is
on "Born To Lose" and the higher-pitched vocals on "Nightmare."
DD pulling off "Headless Cross?" Hmm...I don't know about that one, but
it's an interesting thought. I've seen Dokken twice, both times in a
supporting role (for Dio in early '85 and Judas Priest in summer '86 on the
bog-awful "Turbo" tour...they blew Priest away, and I never thought I'd say
that!) and I just can't see L.A. party-hearty Don singing something that
gloomy.
Maybe if Tony Iommi does another multi-singer solo album, he can ask Don to
sing on one of the tracks...and pigs might fly out of my butt! ;-)
Cheers!

Ok its about time I submitted something to this list. I have been a sabbath
fan since i was a little teenage criminal following them in the mid 70's.
My first Sabbath album was Masters of Reality---Would you like to see the
pope on the End of a rope do you think he's a fool.
All we had for info on the band was tabloid info--secret bootlegs and
rumours.
Stories of people turning Christians after listening to evil sabbath songs
and seeing visions..Bullocks I have always loved their mood visons lyrics
and sound.
My last Ozzy era album was the amazing Never say Die. I ran out and bought
it and drove my friends crazy going to their houses and listening to it. I
didnt have a stereo but that didnt stop me.
The first Sabbath show I saw was The Seattle Heaven and hell tour in 1980.
I had no idea Dio was in the band and was wasted on 4 way or something but
do remember the difference and the Blazing Crosses and lest I forget the
stupid satin worshippers who were having some kind of sayonce (spelling). I
had seen Rainbow the year before with Graham Bonnet. Selling weed for
tickets ahh those were the times.
I have seen almost every singer sabbath has had all except Ian Gillian.
I love every version of Black Sabbath --Heaven And Hell.
Mob Rules OMG that was the beginning of Metal period.
When Born again came out I had a hard time listening to it It was way heavy
and darker than I was used to but a few years after it came out I listened
to it alot annoying the neighbors. (I was going into treatment for the
first time) I had The Bootleg from The Born Again Tour from Worcester that
was broadcast over the Radio and love the version of war pigs--the demonic
screaming from Ian He sounded possessed. I have heard other shows and he
never sounded even close to as good as he did on that show.
The came the weird Seventh star Album that I love just as well. I had
(have?)a tape of a show from that tour with ray gillin on vocals somewhere
but never really liked it.
Every Tony Martin Album has a time in place in my heart. Getting married
forming a family trading cases of bad and sometimes good live shows with
people worldwide. I spent so much money on tape and postage.
I saw The last our with Tony Martin In Tacoma Washington and loved it.
Enjoyed Every minute of it.
Then they were gone for years and along comes Ozzfest and the great Ozzy
era Sabbath then the boring same old shit every time tours.
And along comes Dio and Heaven and Hell. I planned a vacation in California
to see my Kids. My son picked me up from the Sacramento airport and we
drove to San Jose to see Heaven and Hell--My 20 year old is a hip hopster
and was gracious and felt lucky to see this band his dad was like a kid
over.
All of the opinions abound but true fans of the lyrical doom sound of my
favorite band love every version of the band.
Modern Technology (computer God) has taken over all of music--ruined the
record companies (boo hooo) and has made it all too convenient.
So now I am 46 and while my 22 year old Model for Abercrombie and Fitch
girlfriend is sleeping, I put the headphones on take out my Vinyl of
Seventh Star and listen to the warmth while once again reading the album
cover and insert.
I miss the warm sounding days when we would rush to the store to get the
first available copy of anything that came out not knowing what really was
going on in the sabbath camp just rumours but listening just the same
wondering when and if they would come to our area and play for us and if
they did gladly stay up all night in line waiting for the best possible
seats or making sure to get tickets. While discussing listening and
partying with other fans while in line.
8 tack tapes and cassettes playing loudly in cars. Music will never be the
same EVER
Dont let people forget what it was like before the computer god took over.

Will, you asked if Tyr and Dehumanizer had been released on vinyl. There
are at least 13 different releases of Tyr
(
http://www.sabbath.se/Discography/tyrvinylLP.html) but it wasn't released
in the US. For Dehumanizer, see
www.dio.net. You can't find Seventh Star
and We Sold Our Souls on vinyl? That sounds bizarre, as I find them in
every record store I go to, and usually for like $7 a piece. The Hand Of
Doom 4 LP box is not rare either. The hard one to find is Cross Purposes on
vinyl. It was released in Brazil, Greece and in the UK. I have only seen it
once on eBay, after 7 years of searching.
If you are interested, check out my discography at
www.sabbath.se. At the
moment there are 1971 items listed. Vinyl, CDs, cassettes, DVDs, 8-tracks,
the whole shabaam actually.

Intermission is very easy to get on vinyl,
much easier than Lock Up The Wolves. The first Rainbow LP as well We Sold..
are very easy ones as well and Seventh Star should not be too difficult
either. I just checked, all those are on Ebay - 10 copies of Seventh Star
starting from $0.69, some 15 copies of Intermission and We Sold.. and over
20 copies of the first Rainbow LP.

Strange Highways, Dehumanizer and TYR never came out on vinyl in the US,
but both of them were released on vinyl elsewhere. Tyr was released
officially in
- Argentina
- Brazil
- Czech Republic
- Columbia
- Germany (3 versions, including picture disc!)
- Greece
- Italy
- South Korea
- UK (black vinyl and picture disc)
- Venezuela
Dehumanizer vinyl came out in a few less countries
- Brazil
- Columbia
- Germany
- Greece
- Italy
- South Korea
- Spain
and finally Strange Highways:
- Germany
- Greece
- Spain
- UK
And if someone happens to have the German and/or Spanish printing of
this, I would be very interested in purchasing those

Hi, there!!
I just wanted to share my happyness with you, guys, since Ozzy is coming to
our country next march! It is his second visit, the last one was in 1995
and I thought I will never be seeing him again.
I know most of you can see Ozzy and other Sabbath musicians alive once or
twice a year, but for us is very unusual (Dio is the only one who came
several times).
I hope H&H comes here as well, so my joy will be complete!

Hi all. Over here in the UK, there was a release of Tyr on vinyl, but I
think it was only as a Picture disc - my copy is. As for later stuff again;
I know for a fact the T.V. Crimes came out as a 12 inch Pic Disc, but as
for the accompanying Dehumanizer album, I don't have any details. As vinyl
didn't really get phased out properly until the Mid 90s, there is every
chance that even Cross Purposes may have been put out on vinyl, I don't
actually know. I'll have a look in the Essential Rock Discography and see
what it says in there, then let you all know in the next message I send in.
All the best fellas

Subject: Eternal Idol/mid-80's Sabbath
Date: Tue, 12 Feb 2008 06:35:27 +0000
Hello everyone. I really enjoyed reading Joe's notes about Eternal Idol on
the 20th anniversary. EI is an underrated album with some great songs.
Please allow me to share a few Sabbath memories.
My first exposure to Sabbath, and I'm sure it was the same for many other
80's kids, was Ozzy's live album Speak of the Devil. By the time I got
into Sabbath, Ian Gillan and David Donato had already came and went.
Anybody remember the Masters of Metal and White Hot compilations with
"Trashed" and "Heaven and Hell", respectively? When I heard that Glenn
Hughes was going to be the vocalist for Sabbath I thought, "Glenn Hughes
from Purple, cool!" At my school I can proudly say without exaggeration
that I was THE heaviest metalhead around. The other kids were infatuated
with Metallica (not slamming them, they're great) and hadn't bothered to do
their rock history homework. Nobody else at my school had any idea who
Glenn Hughes was, so Seventh Star was met with general indifference. I
jammed the hell out of SS and I still like it.
Next thing I know I'm reading a magazine article entitled "Sabbath's Ray of
Hope." Hughes is out and Ray Gillen is in for the Seventh Star tour. From
the recordings I've heard featuring Ray I think he could've been a great
vocalist for Sabbath if he had chosen to stick around. Maybe the
temptation to form a band that was more in keeping with musical trends of
the time (Led Zep clones) was too much for Ray, so he left Sabbath to play
with John Sykes and then Jake E. Lee in Badlands.
Enter Tony Martin. I can't believe he only had one week to redo the vocals
for Eternal Idol. He never had a chance to put much of himself on the
album as he was just copying Ray's vocal lines. But it's a worthy
performance on his first album with Sabbath and I think this album began to
establish Tony as a fine vocalist. The songs are great from start to
finish. "The Shining" is a great leadoff track and "Ancient Warrior" just
kills. "Nightmare" is somewhat bluesy yet possibly the album's heaviest
track. "Scarlet Pimpernel" is a beautiful guitar instrumental and closer
"Eternal Idol" shows that in the mid-80's Iommi was still the master of
doom metal. "Hard Life to Love" and "Born to Lose" are more on the rockier
side of things and "Glory Ride" is a good power metal song.
I was a bit confused as to who actually played what on the album and on
which song. Let's see, we have two bassists (Thanks Joe for clearing it up
that Dave Spitz did not play on EI, but why is he listed in the credits?),
two drummers (conflicting versions of that story as well) and two vocalists
involved in the making of this album. We know that EI was never intended
to be an Iommi solo album, but why do the credits list Tony as "The
Player," relegating the rest of the band to "players?"
Of course, the critics at the time saw this as a worthless album simply
because it wasn't the original Sabbath lineup. I remember such headlines
as "Idols or Imposters?" and read one journalist's comment that "latest
no-name singer Tony Martin sounds so much like several times removed
predecessor Ronnie James Dio that he should take shrinking pills and
complete the effect." It was this negative mindset that damaged Sabbath's
reputation so much during the mid-80's, and I never bought into it. I was
always interested in the music Sabbath made, and I felt that the music of
Black Sabbath was more important than any individual members. On the other
hand, I think that the lineup changes always made for challenging and
interesting music. Cozy Powell said it best:"At the end of the day, it's
about what Sabbath IS(not was)."
So thanks Joe and thank you all for your time. I'm looking forward to the
20th anniversary of Headless Cross. See you and stay heavy!=

Hey, whatever happened to former Dio guitarist Rowan Robertson? As I
recall, he was quite young when he joined Dio's band. That album "Lock Up
the Wolves" had some quite heavy guitar playing on it, from the heavy blues
of "Evil on Queen Street" to the tasteful melodic picking of the title
track. Anybody have any info? Sorry if this has been discussed before. =

Subject: Crucifix Controversies...
Hello Joe, I have a question that I would like to ask the Sabbath
community concerning a couple of album covers. Let me know if this is my
imagination but I could have sworn that the front cover of Sabotage
originally pictured Ozzy holding a big, wooden crucifix in his left hand.
If we look closely at the current pressings of Sabotage, Ozzy's left hand
is slightly hidden behind his outfit and I believe this to be the edited
or revised album cover without the crucifix. Now if we look at the back
cover, it is clear that Ozzy's "mirror image" is clutching something in
his left hand. If I'm correct about the original album cover showing Ozzy
with a big crucifix in his hand, then does anyone know why that version of
the cover was banned?
Secondly, when the original Heaven and Hell album cover was released in
1980, again I could have sworn that the bench the 3 angels were sitting on
was in the shape of a big, velvet-draped crucifix. The angels sit on the
"north-south" part of the cross but I suspect that the "east-west" part
was later edited out. On current pressings of Heaven and Hell, we can see
that the middle angel has her legs slightly propped up where the
"east-west" part of the cross could have been under. Furthermore, if we
look closely just below where this middle angel sits, we can see that the
velvet drape has folds and creases consistent with my missing "east-west"
theory. If I right, why did they ban the original cover? I admit that
I've had a lot of time on my hands lately! SINcerely, Mark

I guess to those of us who love all incarnations of Sabbath, this may
help:
When Syd Barrett was replaced by Roger Waters, Pink Floyd was still Pink
Floyd.
When the band wrote Heaven and Hell, Born again, Cross purposes etc, the
name of the band was BLACK SABBATH.
Forget the legal crap, Black Sabbath in all forms is the greatest band
on the planet (and probably even further).

it states Tony's real name is Anthony Frank Iommi Isn't it Frank Anthony
