Glenn Hughes on new Iommi Album

I was just alerted to a new interview with Glenn Hughes over at classicrockrevisited.com. In this interview (conducted by Kevin DuBrow of Quiet Riot, of all people), Glenn had some major praise for the as of yet unnamed album by Tony, which has no release date yet. Check out these choice comments by Glenn..

Kevin: You played me the upcoming, not-yet-released Iommi-Hughes record today. I have to say that for a heavy metal record, it is just fucking huge.

Glenn: We finished it about a month ago with Kenny Aronoff. It is a mammoth, spectacle extravaganza record. It is a huge, huge album. It is classic rock and modern rock with Tony’s guitar sound and Big Daddy’s soulful overtones. It was written in Birmingham in October. Tony and I wrote about 18 songs. We realized we were missing something and we realized it so we brought in Kenny Aronoff. We didn’t want a session guy, instead we wanted someone who would play with us in a live setting. When we started playing with Kenny we knew we had what we wanted. The album was recorded between December 3rd and December the 20th at Monnow Valley in Wales. I think it really is a mammoth record.

Kevin: Will you and Iommi be doing anything live?

Glenn: Tony and I will tour the album properly when we get the right release date and the right tour in front of us. This album is too big to ignore.

Kevin: When is the release date for the album?

Glenn: I have heard the press will be flown into New York and London and have a listening party. It is a big record and when the fans hear it then they will understand why I am making such a big deal out of it. It makes a big statement.

There is plenty more in this interview, so go check it out.

Black Sabbath 2005 Tour Date Information

Well, given that the news is all over the place, and at this point, the cat is pretty much out of the bag, I've gone and set up my 2005 Tourdates page. There's not a whole lot of dates there yet - in fact the only two are the already mentioned Roskilde date in Denmark, and the Download festival at Derbyshire in the UK.

I have heard rumours that there will be an Ozzfest 2005 Tour in the US that will start in July and end in September, but nothing concrete about that. Once more tour dates start rolling in, expect that I'll have more information as to where, when, and whatnot. :)

As per usual, if you have any tour advertisments in your local newspapers or ticket stubs, I'd love to get a scan of them to use on the website. Please email me with those. Thanks!

Bill Ward wants your questions!

As regular Bill Ward site visitors know, Bill has been doing a monthly radio programme over the Internet. Well, with 2005 being the 35th anniversary of Black Sabbath's first album release, Bill wants to do something special with his programme.

To this, he wants to collect your questions via email and will read and answer some of them on his show. So, if you have a question for Bill Ward, please email it to the following address: rock50@billward.com. Just make sure the question is about Black Sabbath. :)

Then make sure to listen in to the February 5th edition of "Rock 50" and see if Bill reads your question on the air! For further info on Bill & the Rock 50 show, visit the Rock 50 page over at billward.com.

Bill will stop taking emails on Thursday Feb 3rd at 4PM EST, so get your questions in!

2005 Tour Update

Well, it looks like Sabbath is gearing up for more touring in 2005. Aside from my story the other day, there was a second festival mentioned, as well as a tour of the US and Europe (link).

It appears that Sabbath will be touring both Europe and the United States this summer. Whether this is part of Ozzfest, or on their own, I don't know. Personally, I hope it's on their own, so we can get a proper set list that isn't just Iron Man / War Pigs / Paranoid.

No word on the actual band lineup (although I would assume it's with Bill Ward) or whether it might be Adam Wakeman or Geoff Nicholls on keyboards. No dates or anything like that yet, but when I get them, they'll be here.

However, oddly enough I still can't get a formal confirmation of all this from band's management. It's starting to appear all over the place now, so there's probably more to it than just a mistake at this point, but until I get an official word on it from band management, I'll wait on creating a new tour page for it. However, once I do, I'll be starting up again collecting tour advertisements, ticket stubs, things of that nature.

Black Sabbath & 2005 European Festivals

Overnight I got about 20-25 emails telling me about a news story on Blabbermouth saying Black Sabbath is "confirmed" to play Denmark's Roskilde festival on June 30 to July 3 of this year. Additionally, there was a second article speculating that Sabbath also might play the UK Download festival.

Whenever I get news like this via email from fans, my first reaction is to try and confirm it myself through my contacts with the band. So I wrote to managment this morning asking "is this true?", but haven't gotten anything back that confirms the dates.

It would appear (at least right now, anyway) that these "confirmed" dates really aren't confirmed based on the non reply I got. I will definitely stay on top of this and update my news story as need be with either a proper "confirmation" or a proper "denial".

Stay tuned.

Listen to audio samples for new Dio Live CD

As reported on a week ago, the next Dio release will be a live CD. The recording was culled from the gig in New York in December of 2002. The band then included guitarist Doug Aldrich, who left after the tour to join Whitesnake. However, the gig is now being released as a live album on February 22nd, 2005.

There's a few audio samples from the album online now over at the Spitfire Records site here. The samples are not downloable, they require you to have the Flash plugin for your browser to hear them.

The concert has been available as a DVD for some time now. If you're interested in purchasing this album or DVD, please make use of the links below.

New Iommi Album Update

It appears that the new Tony Iommi / Glenn Hughes album is progressing faster than I had previously anticipated. The following update appeared over the weekend on Tony's Website:

Tony is making great progress with his new album which, as we reported previously, features Glenn Hughes (www.glennhughes.com) on vocals and Kenny Aronoff (www.kennyaronoff.com) on drums. They’ve cut 13 tracks, all produced by Bob Marlette, who worked on Tony’s first solo album in 2000 and the Black Sabbath ‘Reunion’ album in 1998, and whose recent productions with Seether and Shinedown are currently in the US Billboard charts.

The album is now at the mixing stage and discussions are taking place regarding the release date which will be later this year. Tony is also hoping to be able to take this album out live.

If Tony goes out with this live, I hope he comes to the United States with it. It's been so long since all the non Osbourne material has gotten any airplay outside of a Dio concert, I'd like to see it again!

What Should Sabbath do in 2005?

In light of the recent petition that was placed online to "Fire Ozzy" from Black Sabbath and replace him with another singer that turned out to be a joke, I thought it might be interesting to actually poll people and see what they think about this issue.

I've changed the poll on the front page of my Sabbath site with a few options relative to this issue for you to vote upon. This is of course not binding on anyone or anything - this is afterall just a fan website, but I am curious to see what people think Black Sabbath should do this year.

It is, after all the 35th anniversary of the release of their first album, so if there ever was a time to put out a new album, THIS IS IT, GUYS!.

Dio to release live CD in February

I just read this morning that Spitfire Records will be releasing a Live Dio CD on Feburary 22nd. The title is Evil or Divine: Live in New York City. If that title sounds familiar, it should, as this recording is culled from the same concert that produced the Evil or Divine DVD that was released a little over a year ago. The Dio band was slightly different then than it is now, but this was a really great DVD, and I'm sure the live CD will be great as well, as Dio always is.

For further information and ordering links on this and other related DVD's, please see the DVD page on this site

Update on the new news system

I finished up my work on getting the new news system looking right. If you had used the search before now, you know what I'm talking about. Here's what I fixed/added:

  • The search page now looks like the rest of the site
  • The monthly archive pages are now properly linked
  • I settled on having the last 4 calendar months of news online on the main news page
  • Added archive links to the bottom of the main news page

So everything should be working fine now. All future news will be in the new system. I'll also add the older stuff in as I find the time. If you want to volunteer to help get the old news in shape for import, drop me a line.

Thanks!

Buy Cozy Powell's Drums

Ran across this item tonight over on ebay. Apparently, someone is selling what they claim to be Cozy Powell's drum kit when he was in Black Sabbath and Brian May's band.

You can view the auction here.

I have no information as to the legitimicy of this auction, I'll try and look into it, but I don't know if I'll get an answer before the auction is scheduled to end (Jan 23rd).

UPDATE: I got word back from someone who I'd rather not name who says it looks legitimate. How the person selling the kit came upon it they don't know, but did seem to think that it was real.

Psycho Man Video

The last full studio album Black Sabbath has released was 1995's underrated Forbidden. However, the last studio output the band put out were the two tracks on 1998's Reunion. These two tracks were titled "Selling My Soul", and "Psycho Man".

Neither of these got a music video made for them, however that has changed now. Sabbath fan Robert Jackson has created his own "music video" for Psycho Man. It's got video from the classic thriller "Psycho" with the Psycho Man song running behind it. It's actually fits the song quite well. Here's some of Rob's own words about the video..

I'm a film student at San Francisco State and over the break I've been taking apart famous scenes and tightening them up or rearranging them as little editing projects. I had an idea a few nights ago for a video. It's about 28 meg, though. Any smaller than that and the quality was either going to go to hell or I was going to have to use a proprietary codec like Divx, so only people with broadband connections will probably want to check it out. It's "Psycho Man" from the Sabbath reunion album. I had fun doing it. Hopefully you'll have fun watching it. ;-)

BTW, this is obviously an educational project and not intended for any other purpose.

If you want to check it out, you can do so here. Additionally, you can leave feedback for Robert in this thread in our forums here at black-sabbath.com.

Bill Ward's Radio Show Reruns

For awhile now, Bill Ward has been doing a monthly radio program out of WPMD (a college radio station at Cerritos College in California). This morning comes word that Bill Ward's previous programs will be rerun in a special programming block.

WPMD.org's "alternative stream" presents a Bill Ward Marathon. Every "Rock 50" show that the Black Sabbath drummer has done on WPMD over the last three years will be played, in order and repeated, from February 1st through the 8th.

From February 8th through the 15th, the WPMD.org "alternative stream" will celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the demise of the LA heavy metal legend -- Pure Rock 105.5 KNAC-FM. The celebration will include full shows, special programs, special guests and historical tidbits from the final days leading up to the end on February 15, 1995, when KNAC-FM left the air. On February 15th the final 8 hours will play in the same time slot that closed out the station in 1995 -- from 6am to 2pm. Special guests in those final hours include Lars Ulrich and James Hetfield of Metallica, along with air personalities from the entire history of "Pure Rock" 105.5 KNAC-FM.

Tony Martin Update on "Scream"

I was pretty backlogged with email this past week, and neglected to get this online. It was sent to me by Tony Martin, and is an update on his solo album "Scream", which was due to be released early in 2005. It's been delayed a bit. Here's what Tony has to say about it...

Dear friends,

Well here we are on the other side and guess what!.... It's still in the making. Yep, I tried to get this album ready for the WLM tour but it aint happened. I wasn't able to find anyone that could press it in the time left and then there were a few small problems with one of the tracks so I had to go back over it. SO! Here's the deal, I reckon it's gonna be ready by the spring time, hopefully April and the idea is this, the limited edition version will be available through us here since there will only be 2000 of them. I'm trying to release another version of it though with some different tracks on it through main stream companies. The problem with that is some companies want it all for themselves and I wanna hook up with a few different ones to cover the different territories around the world, so there's still some discutions going on about that. The Limited edition version will have an interview track that I'm doin about the album and various other stuff plus the regular tracks and a Sabbath live track. The other album will have 2 different tracks swapped in the list and no interview track.

Both albums will be called "Scream" but will have different packaging so they have their own identities. Why am I goin to all this bother? well, it seemed to me that it would be great to offer something special to those of who have really hung in there and been following my career closer than most, thus the limited edition through my site. This should be the first released, the mainstream one should follow later in the year.

I may be trying to acheive the impossible here because some of the companies are resisting the non-exclusive licenceing idea I've got, on the other hand there are others that don't mind so I'll let you know how that goes.

Anyways that's it for now.

best wishes

TM

What are they up to now?

In all the years of Black Sabbath, there's been a lot of folks that have been in the band in some capacity. There's quite a few of them to keep track of, and it occurred to me during the month of December that I should take stock of everyone, and see what they're all up to. There's a few that was not able to find information on, so if you know what's going on with them, please let me know. Likewise, if you spot an error, let me know that, too.

I don't plan on following up on everyone that's ever guested in some capacity on a Sabbath album (Rick Wakeman, Brian May, IceT), things of that nature. Just folks who were considered members of Sabbath, even if it was for just a short while.

So without further ado, here's my "What are they up to now" story for January of 2005. I'll be going in alphabetical order by surname.

Don Airey:

With Sabbath: Keyboardist on 1978's Never Say Die! album.

Currently: Don is the keyboardist for Deep Purple, and just finished a world tour for their 2003 release, "Bananas". Deep Purple is supposed to be recording a new album in 2005.

Home Page: http://www.donairey.com.

Vinny Appice:

With Sabbath: Drummer from 1980-1982 and again from 1991-1992.

Currently: Last I heard, Vinny had reformed one of his former bands, World War III with former Dio/Rainbow bassist Jimmy Bain. This was during the summer of 2004, so I'm not sure if that info is still current or not. Also appears to be involved with a project called the Hollywood All-Stars, which includes Carlos Cavazo (ex Quiet Riot) & Jeff Pilson (Dio/Dokken).

Home Page: http://www.vinnyappice.com.

Bev Bevan:

With Sabbath: Was the drummer for the Born Again Tour in 1983. Was also around briefly in 1987, and was credited as "percussionist" on the 1987 release "The Eternal Idol".

Currently: Bev appears to have recently been involved in a reformation of the classic 60's/70's band "The Move". Additionally, he's got his own band called "The Bev Bevan Band. The most recent tourdate I could find for the Bev Bevan Band was November 4, 2004.

Home Page: None that I'm aware of.

Mike Bordin:

With Sabbath: Was the drummer for the Ozzfest 97 tour. Was also announced as the drummer for Ozzfest 2004 before tour promoter Sharon Osbourne and Bill Ward came to terms on a contract.

Currently: Mike has been Ozzy's solo band drummer for awhile now, being in and out of the band over the last few years. The last I heard of him, he was announced as the drummer for Black Sabbath for Ozzfest 2004, but after Bill Ward came back, I haven't heard anything else (except that he likely got paid for the tour anyway, even though he didn't play).

Home Page: None that I'm aware of.

Joe Burt:

With Sabbath: Was the bassist for the short lived Eternal Idol tour in November and December of 1987.

Currently: I have no idea where to find information on Joe Burt. If you have any, please let me know. Might be involved with a band called "Xit18", but I'm not sure if it's the same Joe Burt or not.

Home Page: None that I'm aware of.

Geezer Butler:

With Sabbath: Bassist and founding member of Black Sabbath, left in 1984, returned in 1991, left in 1994, returned in 1997.

Currently: Geezer was on tour with Black Sabbath for Ozzfest 2004, and is currently finishing up work on his third solo album Ohmwork, which he expects to release early in 2005.

Home Page: http://www.geezerbutler.com, but it's been "Coming soon" for a couple of years now.

Terry Chimes:

With Sabbath: Drummer for Black Sabbath from Summer of 1987 through the spring of 1988, played during the Eternal Idol tour, and some other oddball live dates in 1987 and 1988.

Currently: "Dr. Terry Chimes" as he's now known, has been retired from music for some time, and has been a Chiropractor in London England since 1994.

Home Page: I don't believe Terry has a home page in the classic sense of the word, but his medical practice has a home page, you can get to it here.

Gordon Copley:

With Sabbath: Gordon was involved during the early days of the Seventh Star project as bassist. Sabbath ended up using Dave Spitz as their bassist, but Gordon does appear on the final Seventh Star album, playing bass on the song "No Stranger to Love".

Currently: Unknown - I have no idea what he's up to.

Home Page: None that I'm aware of.

Laurence Cottle:

With Sabbath: Laurence was a session bass player, and he was the bassist on 1989's Headless Cross album. He also appears in the video for the song "Headless Cross".

Currently: Laurence is playing with Bill Bruford, in Bill's band "Earthworks". Laurence is also playing with his own "Big Band" concept (17 musicians).

Home Page: http://www.laurencecottle.com.

Bob Daisley:

With Sabbath: Bob played bass on the 1987 release "The Eternal Idol".

Currently: Bob has been mostly been involved with the Living Loud project. He's also appeared on Gary Moore's 2004 album "Power of The Blues", and supported it with some live dates. Additionally, Bob made an appearance on the Voodooland project.

Home Page: http://www.bobdaisley.com.

Ronnie James Dio:

With Sabbath: Ronnie was with Sabbath from 1979 through 1982, and again from 1991-1992. Was responsible for an absolute masterpice of an album, "Heaven & Hell".

Currently: Ronnie has completed the US tour for his 2004 release, "Master of the Moon". There's a live date scheduled for Puerto Rico in Feburary, but beyond that, I don't think he's doing much but taking a break right now. He has said he's supposed to work on a charity project in 2005 which will benefit Children of the Night a child rescue charity.

Home Page: http://www.ronniejamesdio.com.

Dave Donato:

With Sabbath: Dave was briefly hired to be vocalist for Black Sabbath during the summer of 1984, but Sabbath and he parted company after a short public period where he was known to be Sabbath's singer.

Currently: I believe Dave has stopped working on music, and works at a motorcycle shop in Anaheim, California.

Home Page: None that I'm aware of.

Ian Gillan:

With Sabbath: Ian was the vocalist in Sabbath during 1983 and 1984. He is on the Born Again album, and toured behind that album.

Currently: Ian is the vocalist for Deep Purple, and just finished a world tour for their 2003 release, "Bananas". Deep Purple is supposed to be recording a new album in 2005.

Home Page: http://www.gillan.com.

Ray Gillen:

With Sabbath: Ray was the vocalist in Sabbath during 1986 and part of 1987. He stepped in for Glenn Hughes on the Seventh Star tour, and then recorded the Eternal Idol album, but left before it was released.

Currently: Ray died of AIDS related complications on December 3, 1993.

Home Page: None that I'm aware of.

Rob Halford:

With Sabbath: Rob has sung vocals for Black Sabbath on three dates - Nov 14 & 15, 1992 and Aug 26, 2004.

Currently: Rob was out on tour with Judas Priest on Ozzfest 2004 this past year. The first new Judas Priest album with Rob Halford (Angel of Retribution) is due to be released in Feb 2005, followed by touring with Priest.

Home Page: http://www.robhalford.com.

Glenn Hughes:

With Sabbath: Glenn sang vocals on the Seventh Star album, and started the tour, but parted company with Sabbath after only a handful of gigs.

Currently: Glenn is currently recording in England with Tony Iommi for Tony's new solo album due in 2005. Glenn also has a new solo album due out early in 2005 called "Soul Mover".

Home Page: http://www.glennhughes.com.

Tony Iommi:

With Sabbath: Uh, everything?! :)

Currently: Tony is currently in England recording a new solo album due for release in 2005.

Home Page: http://www.iommi.com.

Ron Keel:

With Sabbath: Nothing officially. Depending on who you talk to, Ron either was or wasn't hired as vocalist during a time in the Summer of 1984.

Currently: Involved in a band called Iron Horse. Also played country music for awhile under the name "Ronnie Lee Keel".

Home Page: http://www.ronkeel.com.

Geoff Nicholls:

With Sabbath: Sabbath keyboardist from 1980 through 2001. Also handled backup vocals and rhythm guitar in live concerts.

Currently: Unknown. Was not asked to participate on Ozzfest 2004. Last I heard he was working on writing soundtrack music, but for what, I don't know. Black Box Promo Sampler CD

This past week, I was made available of something I didn't know existed before. It's a "Black Box Promo Sampler CD". It's basically something that appears to be not available for sale to the general public. It's a really slick looking CD which has 8 songs on it. One each from each of the Ozzy era Sabbath albums. The songs are:

  • Black Sabbath
  • Paranoid
  • Into the Void
  • Supernaut
  • Killing Yourself to Live
  • Hole in the Sky
  • Rock 'n' Roll Doctor
  • Never Say Die

What else is cool is that when you have the thing opened up fully, it's shaped like a cross. It's too bad this wasn't available to the general public, I know several people who would like to have this. If you visit my Black Box page, I have three pictures of the sampler posted there. I did see a few copies of the sampler on ebay last week too, if you're so inclined to take that route.

New News Format Now Online

Hey gang. Here's a news update which is a little different.

I've changed the news format. Previously, I had flat files with everything on one page, and when I wanted to break things off, I had to do it all by hand. Well, I went and have installed blogging software for me to keep the news with. It will make my life a lot easier in terms of getting updates done, maintenance, that kind of thing. Anyway, I spent some time the last few days making the software look like the rest of my site. It's not all complete, but it's mostly done, so I thought I'd launch it now. Likewise, I have only the news from January 2004 until now in this new system. The old style news pages are still online if you want to view older news, but they'll eventually be moved into here, too.

A big bonus in all this is that you can search the news now (although search is one of the areas where the software doesn't look like the rest of the site - yet).

I have decided NOT to turn on the commenting system, because of two reasons (although they're similar).

1) User comments on music sites tend to be worthless, IMO. Blabbermouth is an example. They're one of the best in terms of news, but the user comments area is mostly folks insulting each other.

2) In the photo gallery here I had comments turned on, but a few asshats ruined it for everyone else, and I had to turn it off.

I'm sorry, but I don't have the time and patience to police a comments field. I didn't think it was a major loss anyway, since I now have online forums where you can interact with others.

If you spot any problems, let me know.

Happy New Year - Sort of

I didn't bother much with "Happy New Year", because I as to bummed out over the loss of life in the Asian Tsunami disaster. As I wreot elsewhere online.. "Happy New year, eh? Not for everyone it isn't. Hell of way to start the new year. I emphasize the word hell. " I've donated some money. I hope you have, too. If not, you can do so via the donation bin over at Amazon.com.

Bill Ward Speaks Out - Sort Of

On december 31st, Bill Ward had me post something over on his website from him. It's a Happy New Year's letter from him to his site visitors. In it, he talks about a lot of things. His family, other musicians, Sabbath, his long delayed third solo album, etc.. It's a good read, go check it out at his website at http://www.billward.com (it's on the news page).
