... I'm making progress. I have some other things to clear up before I tackle the pile of submissions for the recent shows. I will get to that some time this week, but I do not know when exactly. In the meantime, I got a few people sending me this picture, thought it was worth posting. :)
I'm back from my vacation, however, I'm horribly backlogged due to some family issues, as well as my day job duties. I will get caught up as soon as possible. Please continue to send reviews and pictures, they will get used when I'm caught up.
Just a short note to say that after today I'm going to be out of town on vacation with family. Due to this, I won't be answering any emails or updating the site at all. I will catch up when I return in a week. Please continue to send in reviews and emails, they will get used when I catch up.

I've been a bit backlogged the last few days. I've had some personal family issues to deal with, and the site has taken a back seat. Rest assured, I still want your submissions (especially pictures) - send all reviews and pictures to my regular email address. Anyway, I just wanted to let folks know I just posted 19 more pictures, courtesy of Sabbath fan Keith (didn't give me a last name). 17 of them are of Heaven & Hell Black Sabbath, and the other two are Megadeth. Here's an example picture from the new group. Click here to get to the new pictures (they start on Page 3).
I've gotten a boatload of emails about a TV commercial currently airing in Canada for the Heaven & Hell tour. So that people will stop emailing me asking if I know about it, here's a file I found on Youtube..
Guitar World Magazine has a new issue out which is of particular interest to Sabbath fans. It's the May 2007 issue, and has Tony on the cover as one of their three "Living Legends" guitarists (along with Jimmy page & Angus Young). In the email I received the magazine, they included this short text about the contents:
This month's cover of Guitar World magazine tributes The Living Legends. It's Heaven & Hell with Tony Iommi, exploring the masterpiece of High To Hell with Angus Young and finding out how life was on the road with Led Zepplin's Jimmy Page.
Go check it out on newsstands now, and here's a cover image you can check out. For further information on the magazine, check out their official site here.
Finally, after a short delay, the Devil Cried single from the forthcoming "The Dio Years" album is available. I saw it myself (and bought it too) on iTunes, and overnight I got a report from Sabs fan Jeremy Bowers that it is available on the Microsoft Zune service, too.
Noticed that the cover art for the upcoming "Live at Hammersmith" album from the Sabs was over on the Rhino website this morning. So of course, I'm bringing it to you right now.
This will be a limited release print of 5,000 copies sold through the Rhino Handmade website here. They do not appear to be taking pre-orders for this one yet, but if you look around the rest of their site at other items they sell, you can probably get an idea as to how this will run, too.
I've inquired, and have been told that when the 5,000 are sold, that's it. There is not a second run planned, there is not a "print of regular CD's" waiting - the 5k are it. Personally, if everyone on my mailing list buys one, that will take 4/5 of the total volume available anyway. I think a print run of 5,000 is too small, and it will result in a lot of fans getting mad they couldn't get it, and then having to pay too much when they show up on eBay later on. It will probably also lead to rampant piracy of the material, too. Never liked these kinds of decisions before. Oh well, not my choice.
When it is actually available to pre-order, I'll pass on that info. They don't have an actual page for the album at their site, but Rhino Handmade does have the press release which details the track listing, amongst other things. You can check that out here.
I've gotten several emails today about the Devil Cried single (not) being available on iTunes (et al) as scheduled. Here's a news update from the Iommi camp about it:
We’ve had confirmation from Rhino that the upload of the new Black Sabbath single ‘The Devil Cried’ to all DSPs (digital service providers) happened a few days later due to technical problems. The single was still planned for release yesterday (13th March) but may not have made the deadlines of some services including iTunes. We’ve been told that it will be up sometime between now and 20th March on all DSPs.
So basically I'd say to keep trying - it should show up shortly.
Not that I think anyone is surprised by this, but I believe this is the first official confirmation I've seen of there being a live DVD coming from the Heaven & Hell tour in 2007. Sab fan Sean Beston emailed me this afternoon with his concert report (which is up on the Vancouver tourdate page), but he also sent along a scan of a handout they had at the arena. This is what Sean had to say:
Attached is a scan of a H&H card regarding a live CD and DVD that was being given away (along with a Megadeth one) outside of the Coliseum.
What's new to me is that they're going to have a live album from the touring this year. Again, I can't say I'm surprised by that - that's what everyone does these days. Big tour, live album afterwards. But I hadn't seen it published anywhere. So that makes three "Black Sabbath" (Heaven & Hell, whatever the frig you wanna call it) releases this year:
"The Dio Years" - due in April
"Live at Hammersmith" - due in May, limited run of 5,000 copies of a Mob Rules concert CD
Unnamed live CD/DVD coming in the fall
That's all cool, and I'll probably enjoy all of them, but that now makes nine official band releases (four greatest hits albums, four live albums, and one box set) since the last full studio album of material 12 years ago (Forbidden) with Tony Martin. Five studio tracks in the last 12 years just isn't enough, guys. We need more. Heck, I'll settle for a release of old studio demos that aren't even cleaned up! Give me the Ray Gillen Eternal Idol or the Dave Donato 1984 sessions. I'm not picky! :)
Seriously though, it's cool we're getting some activity, make sure and support the band when they're released. Here's a copy of the DVD card that Sean sent in; thanks man.
Well, the tour started last night in Vancouver. I've gotten some photos and quick gig reviews in. While I won't be posting all of them on the news page like this, I thought I'd post some of that stuff directly here, since it was opening night and all.
You will be able to get to all the posted reviews from this page, and the Tour photo gallery will be available here. Again, if you go, and are so inclined, send in whatever you want - I'll be sure to use it and credit you (or not credit you if you want that too).
Review (Ken Stark):
Hi Joe
I am a big fan of both Black Sabbath and your website, and have just returned home from the Heaven and Hell show that opened in Vancouver, B.C. tonight. Since I first heard about the tour dates from your website, I would like to give my thoughts on tonight's show.
I originally went out of nostalgia since I saw them during the Mob Rules Tour in 1982; however, I was very pleasantly surprised. In a word, they were awesome! The band sounded great and very tight. For me the following songs were show stoppers: Children of the Sea, Computer God, Voodoo, Die Young, Heaven and Hell, Mob Rules, Falling of the Edge of the World, and the new song Shadow of the Wind was very powerful. My favorite was Sign of the Southern Cross. The way they played it for the audience was amazing. The oncore Neon Knights sounded very heavy and fantastic as well. I have been a Sabbath and Tony Iommi fan since about 1974. To me, his live sound just keeps getting better with age. His sound throughout the show was very powerful and moving. To everyone who has not yet bought tickets for the Heaven and Hell Tour, go and you will not be disappointed.
Best Regards
Ken

There actually is video from the Vancouver show last night, but it's of pretty crappy quality - check it out if you want to, but don't expect much. :)
The Heaven & Hell tour 2007 gets underway tomorrow night the 11th in Vancouver, BC Canada.
As usual, I will be taking and publishing any concert reports and photos you care to send in. If you have something you'd like to share, email me with your materials.
I will properly credit you with your submissions - or if you wish to remain anonymous, I can handle that, too.
NOTE: While I will not be publishing reviews on the news page, I will be publishing them on the concert reviews section of the website. If you are planning on attending and wish to be totally surprised, I suggest you avoid that section, as I will be posting the set list (when I get it).
As Geezer Butler and the rest of the boys prepare to shove off for another world tour, he found a few minutes to send in a journal update for his site. Here's what Geez had to say:
Well, it's almost here, time to get the hair dye out. We're all rehearsed and ready to go. Canada, and eventually the world, here we come! As you may have heard, the band is called "Heaven and Hell". We'll be playing a selection of songs from all 3 Dio- era albums (of Sabbath), and 3 new songs.
My GZR band is on hold for now, but songs will be written along the way, hopefully culminating as an album sometime in 2010, the Lord or Darwin or Richard Dawkins permitting.
I will endeavor to keep all informed along the rocky road, both highlights and lowlights, and my thoughts thereupon.
Soon, you all must rush out and buy [or stay in and download] Black Sabbath "The Dio Years" album, as offered by our gracious hosts Rhino Records.
So hope to see you all soon, and enjoy the show!
Peace, Geezer.
Check out all the latest about Geezer over at his official site, shockingly enough at http://www.geezerbutler.com :)
Rhino Records has put online a new promotional item for the "Dio Years" album. It's their "E-Card" for the new album - a relatively common promotional tool these days. Here's a listing of what you can do at the E-card page:
Listen to the full version of "The Devil Cried"
View Tour Dates
Send the E-Card to a friend
Get info on Black Sabbath ring tones
Check out the merchandise page
What's most interesting about this page is that before you get to the menu of the thing, you see a flash based animation, which talks about the album, but also includes some artwork which I had not seen before. Here's a capture of a couple of frames of the animation:
I inquired about the artwork, and I was told that it was from the inside of the package, so presumably, this is tray art or something from the booklet - I'm unclear on that, but it is connected the the CD you'll buy (you're buying it right - right??).
The artwork was done by a fellow by the name of Wes Benscoter, who I have mentioned before on this site. He also did the cover art for the 2003 Dio release, "Stand Up & Shout: The Dio Anthology". If you check out my discography page for the Anthology here, you'll see a similar feel in the art.
Just a quick note to let you know (if you haven't seen it already) that a minor revamp of the site's layout is now online. The "look and feel" of this site has remained the way it is for quite some time - I haven't touched it in ages. But as we move forward in 2007 with the Heaven & Hell project, I felt it was time to revamp. This look and feel was originally put online in December of 2000, so it'd been six years since I last updated the site.
The problem is I don't have the time to spend to COMPLETELY overhaul everything - that's too much work for where I am in my life now. However, a graphic refresh was easy enough. Came up with a design idea, passed it on to a graphic friend of mine, and bam! New drop in graphics. It keeps the same overall color scheme and general layout, but refreshes it all at the same time.
The new look is based off the cover art of "The Dio Years" which is due next month. There was some nice, understand art design on that cover, so I thought it lent itself well to a site design as well.
Special thanks to "RedSplat" for doing the physical drawing of the art for me - I can design, I can come up with ideas, but I can't draw worth a shit. :) If you'd like to discuss the changes, you can do so in this thread on the forums here.
As the excitement and anticipation builds for the Heaven & Hell shows this year, lots of things are happening. Earlier today I got an email from Steve Mignardi, who is Ronnie James Dio's personal assistant. Steve alerted me to a blog he is running over on his myspace page which will detail some behind the scenes stuff from the road. He just started a few days ago, but even just from this stuff, it looks like things will be seriously good in this series as the tour gets on the road. I'm posting most of his existing entries here for you to catch up with. I'll also be alerting you to new entries as well
I found this stuff very enlightening to read, and I think you will too. One of the tidbits gleaned from his series are that rehearsals have now completed.
If you enjoy these entries, head over to Steve's Myspace page, and send him a line and let him know what you think. You can also read his entire series over there, too.
March 2, 2007:
Well March 1st is the day the crew flies in from all over the world. Converging in L.A for the start of rehearsals...with the stage set. Load in is Saturday the 3rd with actual rehearsals starting on Sunday.
My travel day started out good. I was going to take a bus to the airport. Then a train derailed close to my house and everyone taking the public trains were put on buses. I just assumed there would be delays. So I drove to the airport. The drive started out o.k. Then the snow storm started on my way. That was hell. Then the cheap bastards at park 'n' fly wanted to charge me $432.00 to park for a month...not the $102.00 they quoted me...new rule - never use park 'n' fly. I did find a place at Dixon and the 401 called Skyway park that let me park for $89.00 plus applicable taxes for the month.
My flight was delayed for a few hours due to the weather. A few e:mails and phone calls to Roger had me wondering where I was going to stay when I got to L.A. Not to worry. Ronnie was going to wait up for me regardless of the time. Being the son he never wanted (inside joke with Janice) this surprised me.
If I can figure out how to take the pictures from my camera and transfer them to my computer, I'll post them. I'm going to call on Rudy Sarzo to get my computer working properly. Well maybe the computer works fine...could it be me? If I can't get hold of Rudy before the tour starts, feel sorry for Vinny. He's a computer wiz and we're on the same bus.
I guess thats it for the first day. The second day will start with Ronnie doing phone interviews then we're off shopping for luggage and pants...and maybe an Indian for lunch.
See ya'
Steve
March 3, 2007:
Well things are starting to heat up now. Ronnie and I took a drive over to the building that production is being set up in.
It was great to see some familiar faces and meet some new ones. We were greeted in the parking lot by the DIO work horse commonly known as Big Scott, who was as usual working his ass off getting the stage set uncrated and moved into place. He wasn't doing it himself, he had help...but I didn't get the names of the people helping him. Lorenzo (monitors), Chris (foh), Mark (ld) and Andre (drum tech) were there getting organised. Chuck is back and thats a good thing. Chuck helps Lorenzo keep things running smoothly. Geo was there as well. Geo is bus driver extrordinaire. Except us pesky Canadians won't let him into the Country, so he's in town getting all our coaches organised.
Special thanks to Andre for helping me learn more about my new laptop an the functions I can't figure out...download is in...upload is out. The camera problem has been addressed but not corrected. Some photos have been put on a disc and will be downloaded soon...but not today.
We watched in amazement as the set was pain stakingly put together piece by piece. All the while lights were being worked on and people running around doing this and that. It was exciting to see.The set is brilliant, awesome...fucking stunning. It will be worth the wait.
I saw the set list as well...brilliant, awesome...fucking stunning. It will be worth the wait. No I won't be posting it. A pleasant surprise or two from my point of view.
We went for a drive to beverage and more...doesn't the name just say it all? So it's time to have a rum and diet coke and sign off. I don't drink and blog.
Tomorrow will be awesome. Production rehearsals with the band...
March 5, 2007:
If todays rehearsals are any indication of whats to come, look out. Bloody great. Everyone looked good and seemed to be enjoying themselves. A lot of joking about with each other. The band sounded good and tight. A few little details were being worked on. After almost five hours things wrapped up for the night...back at it tomorrow. One more day of full rehearsals and then the crew is on the move to Canada...my home and native land. Sorry 'bout that got a little patriotic.
The band has more press and then we follow the crew a day or two later. I have two different itinaries at the moment so I'm not sure of our departure date. I do have more Canadian money on me than U.S so it will be nice to get back to the Great White North.
Today took me back...way back. Heaven and Hell , Mob Rules and Dehumanizer tours all wrapped up into one.
Like I wrote yesterday, the set and set list is truly awesome. No one will go away disappointed.
Well its approaching midnight and we're up early tomorrow. So its time for a dark rum and diet coke...an episode of Law and Order SVU.
Be responsible...don't drink and blog.
March 6, 2007:
Well the last day of production rehearsals are over. It was a crazy, hectic day. Lots of press milling about. Interviews here and there. A film crew following just about everybody around. The band did find some time to get somethings worked out. The band is getting along great, Tony and Geezer were having some fun not quite dueling guitars, but something out of the Beverly Hillbilly's theme song. The crew was still in there trying to focus lights and program different things. Trying to work around the band was not very productive. Not only do the crew have to finish everything, they have to load out tonight and head up to Vancouver. Load out should start around 10:00 p.m and last into the early hours of the morning. The first strike is the most "fun", I don't envy the crew, but if it wasn't for their hard work none of this would happen.
While rehearsals are done, the band now have a couple days of press to do. It never ends for them either. The interview schedule is crazy.
We do have Thursday off to do our last minute running around a packing. Then it's off to the witch...Vancouver.
Ronnie and I are back at the house. Stopped by Subways on the way home. Thank God we had already gone by KFC.
Gene Kirkland, world reknown photographer, stopped by the house for a quick hello and a drink. Yes indeed, fired him up the old dark rum and diet coke. While Gene was here I figured who better to help me with my camera problem. He figures its the cord, get a new one tomorrow.
I have added some old photos...I have over a 1000 from the last few years, I will get some of my favourites on here. It will be a slow process.
Thanks to all of you who want to be added, post comments and send me messages. I'm starting to get the hang of this now and I know once we hit the road this space will get much better.
I was just sent a press release a few minutes ago by Gloria Butler to put up on Geezer Butler's website. As this was big information, I'm posting it here as well. HEAVEN AND HELL DESCENDS ON THE STATES
Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice Reunite For U.S. Tour Spotlighting Black Sabbath’s Dio Years
The Newly Recorded Single “The Devil Cried” Takes Radio By Storm
Tickets For All Dates Go On Sale The Weekend Of March 9
LOS ANGELES — Ronnie James Dio, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinny Appice will reunite for the first time in 15 years as Heaven and Hell Live to cast a dark spell over spring as the quartet tours the U.S. Tickets will go on sale the weekend of March 9 for all 20 stops of the American leg (except Houston, on sale March 17), which is set to launch in Phoenix on April 22. There will also be a special fan presale for all dates beginning Wednesday, March 7 at 12 Noon EST. The tour will follow in the wake of the band’s highly anticipated Radio City Music Hall concert in New York City on March 30, which sold out in a matter of minutes.
Last year, the hard-rocking quartet convened to record three new songs for Rhino Records’ era-spanning collection, Black Sabbath: The Dio Years, due out April 3 on Rhino/Warner Bros. Records. One of the newly recorded tracks – “The Devil Cried” – is the first single. Bristling with the trademark Sabbath sound, the song is being well received by fans and critics alike.
The sessions for Black Sabbath: The Dio Years went so well that the band agreed to satisfy longstanding demands for a reunion tour. Set to launch in Canada on March 11, the Heaven And Hell World Tour will spotlight Dio’s tenure with Sabbath and will feature selections from all three of the group’s the studio albums, Heaven And Hell (1980), Mob Rules (1981) and Dehumanizer (1992), as well as the newly recorded tracks.
Multi-platinum recording artist Megadeth will join the tour and preview never before heard material from the group’s new CD, United Abominations, due out May 8 on Roadrunner Records. All dates will also feature Roadrunner labelmates Machine Head who are supporting their latest album, The Blackening, set for release on March 27.
The word came out on these dates Friday night. Ronnie Dio said on Eddie Trunk's show Friday night that the Phoenix show is the first date, and Holmdel is the last. At least until Sabbath returns again in August to play more US dates.
Apr 22 - Phoenix, AZ @ Dodge Theatre
Apr 24 - San Jose, CA @ HP Pavilion
May 06 - Minneapolis, MN @ Target Center
May 10 - Philadelphia, PA @ Wachovia Spectrum
May 15 - Uncasville, CT @ Mohegan Sun Arena
May 17 - Lowell, MA @ Paul E. Tsongas Arena
May 19 - Holmdel, NJ @ PNC Bank Arts Center
Apparently more US dates will be announced on Monday, too.
In all the Heaven & Hell hysteria, let's not forget that Ozzy has a new studio album coming out this year as well. While I don't believe the title for it has been released, I read an article earlier this evening about it. Instead of me paraphrasing, I'll lay it on you here:
-----
Ozzy Osbourne has told Rolling Stone magazine that the war in Iraq weighed heavily on his mind during the recording sessions for his first album of new material in six years. "Bombs are falling and tears are falling," Ozzy reportedly sneers across what Rolling Stone describes as "a modern metal anthem," entitled "Countdown's Begun".
But Osbourne told the magazine that he didn't set out to write another "War Pigs", the Black Sabbath classic inspired by an earlier generation's unpopular war. "I don't want to get political," said Ozzy, who has visited maimed soldiers in military hospitals during recent tours. "I try to mask it so you can think what you like. The things around you affect you but you don't realize it. You look at CNN and a fucking car bomb has gone off."
Among the eleven new tracks Osbourne has recorded is "Not Going Away", which Rolling Stone describes as "a fiery rocker with ominous riffs from guitarist Zakk Wylde," and "Lay Your World On Me", which was inspired by Ozzy's wife and manager's recent battle with cancer.
The follow-up to 2001's "Down To Earth", was recorded with the same band that backed Osbourne on his scattered 2006 Ozzfest dates — Zakk Wylde on guitar, Mike Bordin on drums, and former Rob Zombie bassist Rob "Blasko" Nicholson. The album has no official producer, although longtime Mutt Lange protégé Kevin Churko is serving as the engineer.
"Kevin's working the machines and helping me with the songwriting," Osbourne recently told Revolver magazine. "He really knows what he's doing with the ProTools, which is good because I can't work the fucking thing. I can barely work a light switch!"
The new CD is the first to be recorded in Osbourne's home studio, located in the newly soundproofed guest house behind his Beverly Hills mansion, which he's outfitted with a mixing desk and a ProTools rig. "If you ever have inspiration, you can put down an idea," Osbourne told Rolling Stone of recording at home. "The bad thing is your wife can get ahold of you all the time for whatever she wants you to do."
The Rhino Website has a page where you can listen to audio samples of all the songs from the Dio Years. This includes the three new songs, of which Ear in the Wall & Shadow of the Wind are included. Check out the page over at Rhino's website.
Don't forget, Rhino has a free (legal) version of The Devil Cried available for streaming, too. You can get details on that here.
