Late in 2009 I restarted this site’s classic “Survivor” series of polls to determine your favorite track from every Black Sabbath album.  This started on the forums here, but I’ve decided to move it to the website to get greater attention.  I’m going to run through all the Black Sabbath studio albums by eras and then through the solo albums after that.  We’ve gone through a few eras now, and were in the middle of the Tony Martin era when 13 came out.  I decided that we’d take a break for “13” as opposed to waiting for the end, and then we’ll get back to the Tony Martin era.

Speaking of eras..   The Ian Gillan & Glenn Hughes “eras” have just one album, so there won’t be an “era” poll for them, nor do I think it’s fair to compare those two albums against each other, so we’ll go into the Tony Martin era after Seventh Star.

The idea here is that YOU VOTE FOR YOUR LEAST FAVORITE SONG – not which song sucks per se, but of the available choices, the one you like the least. The one with the most votes will be removed from the list, and the list will be reposted minus that song until just one remains, as the album favorite. Each poll will run for 7 days.

Comments

  1. This is the first time I’ve seen this analysis. Some I agree with and some I can’t abide by (Falling off the edge of the world arghhhh! – reminds me of some 80’s US hair band song) but then again if everyone doesn’t get pissed off about some of the results in these lists then they have no real passion in the first place.

Good stuff Joe, I’ll certainly be interested in following the votes for 13.

  2. Voted Peace of Mind… Hey Joe, I think a lot of us would be curious how you vote each round. Can you do that for us? Thanks

  3. KiloDeltaCharlie says

Hmm, there’s nothing on the album which is dreadful, but there are some which are “less equal”. I voted for Live Forever, but it was a close thing with Peace of Mind and God Is Dead?

Naivete in Black shouldn’t be going first, I presume it’s lack of access to it among many of the voters is to blame

  4. I chose pariah. But I don’t understand why so many people chose Nib2. It does stick out like a sore thumb, but it’s still a good track. I don’t agree with how people are voting on this one.

  5. age of reason!!!!! amazing!
    intro brad wilk so good!

  6. sorry i did a mistake for me the least is naivete in black
escuse joe difficult translate for me!

  7. Why there is no Naivete in Black?
It’s not my least favourite track, but to be fair all tracks should be included.

  8. I really cant see why everyone is voting off the bonus tracks. Quite honestly, I think both Pariah and NIB are better than Zietgiest,.

  9. “The Shining was the winner of the “Seventh Star” Survivor Poll” (that should be Eternal Idol now shouldn’t it? ;)

Yeah I know it’s a petty detail that no one cares about, but I couldn’t help mentioning it :)

  10. Voted “Live Forever”…how ’bout you Joe?

  11. Hooray the poll is working again!

  12. damaged soul really is the second most down voted song (as of 1/29/14)? wtf, internet? that is ome of the best ones on the album. it’s bluesy, doomy, its just like the first album. and when it kicks in towards the end there is one of the best moments I heard in music all year. that song is awesome, you motherfuckers are nuts!!!!!

  13. henry mossberg says

It was disappointing to see DAMAGED SOUL get voted off, as it is by far one of the most intense songs I’ve heard in years, It has tone, depth, grind, tempo shifts, and – as Joe said way back when – HARMONICA.

But, I’m not as surprised as I would have been if I hadn’t read all of the comments by fans clamoring for more Tony Martin. Long live Lemmy as I think I’ll have a grabber reading the glowing fan comments on the great new version of Motorhead, after Geddy Lee joined the band. (disclosure – there’s alot of Rush and Motorhead in the collection here)

Back to DAMAGED SOUL – This finishing in the Top 3 SHOULD be a signal to the Sabs that a few live performances during their next NorAmer tour are in order. Took them forever to realize what a killer they had with Dirty Women – let’s not wait so long with DAMAGED SOUL.

Finally – 3 of my favorite 4 from 13 will finish in the Top 4 of Survivor – there’s still some hope for you TM fans, yet.

    • Yeah, Damaged Soul only got voted off by two votes, and the other two songs were tied. One of the closest rounds in the history of the thing.

  14. PAMETAL4EVR says

So it’s between End Of The Beginning and Age Of Reason. Besides the fact that it should be between Methademic and Damaged Soul, I have to vote Age Of Reason. Even though End Of The Beginning Will loose. Seriously, guys Age Of Reason is a good song but it’s just so damn tedious at points. That’s why I’m surprised it didn’t get voted off after Live Forever. End Of The Beginning truly is the better track in my opinion. But Damaged Soul deserves better.

  15. End of the Beginning is my favourite song on the album, but I still love Age of Reason; it probably has my favourite lead guitar work on the album.
