Was listening to "SBS" & "S" to day and having listened to the last two Ozzy albums the day before; just got the feeling that they lost some some of that foreboding darkness that seemed to be more evident on the first four albums; anyone else find that? Not that there aren't some dark songs on the last four albums, I just felt that guttural edge that they seemed to have was somehow watered down, maybe just a natural progression? They got more money, were not maybe as "dark" as they were when they made those early albums? More drug use? Maturity in general? I dunno, just curious what you guys find. Not saying any of them are better or worse albums, just different, to be honest Volume 4 seems to be when this starts for me, I always see the first three as having the same "blue print" so to speak, then w/ "V4" things changed...

Since the day I became a fan of Sabbath, I have listened to many Sabbath live performance in the early days. Most of them are bootlegs. And many of you might agree on this one: the song Black Sabbath is much more brutal when played live in the 70s comparing to the current and the late 90s Ozzy era.

The first factor is Ozzy's voice and his choice of words. Here I'm not talking about when he sings the main lyrics like "What is this that stands before me/This the end my friend" but the parts after the main lyrics when Ozzy yells "Oh no/Oh no no please god help me/no no please no". In the early 70s, Ozzy had a different way of presenting these three parts.

Take the Paris 1970 and the Beat Club video as the examples: Ozzy yells noticeably in a higher pitch. Not only that, but when you compare these performances to Reunion and recent lives, the early 70s performance actually gave you a sense of hopelessness, a feeling that you are really doomed. The choice of words also worth being notice as well, as in live gigs before the band go completely crazy Ozzy yelled "no, no, oh god no" in very high pitch.

The second factor is Bill's drumming. In live gigs(also Beat Club and Paris 1970 as examples), during the verses, Bill didn't drum like an evil orchestra in the album, but simply follow the tempo and mainly hit the snare drum, making it like a march of evil. And when the band starts going crazy after the main riff is over, Bill literally exploded on snare drum and cymbals, and was much louder than in the studio. Sometimes Bill even sounded like playing blast beats! Unfortunately this element is 90% lost nowadays.

To further show how brutal the song can be, well you guys might have heard this one, let me present you Sabbath's live performance at Toronto 1971 (also known as the Wicked Sabbath bootleg). The song starts at around 17:52. Totally worth a listen, as this is the most brutal title track I ever heard. You can clearly hear Bill playing lots of blast beats here.

By the way, I'm actually not sure if these drumming can be called blast beat like in death metal, but since Bill's explosion part is really as brutal as blast beats, I can't think of a better way to describe it.

I was doing some cleaning tonight so to help get the mojo going I put on same classic BLACK SABBATh vinyl. I've been meaning to listen to some of the old vinyl records for awhile now. Anyway, I listened to NEVER SAY DIE, MASTER OF REALITY and VOL. 4 in their entirity tonight.

Made me wonder, who else on here still listens to vinyl?

I have to admit, even though I am a big NEVER SAY DIE fan, listening to MASTER OF REALITY immediatly after NSD really showcased that "cold" feel that album has to it. Vinyl doesn't lie. Those records sound like how the recordings are suppose to sound. And of course the sound changes more and more throughout time.

In various articles, interviews etc. it's been mentioned that in all 16 tracks were recorded during the "13" sessions.

Tony stated that they would all be released in some format or another and many of us will be hoping that they all appear on the super deluxe box set version. But, the closer we get to the release date, the more it seems we will just get the three on the deluxe versions with a fourth on the best buy or Japanese import.

So, when and how will the other 4 tracks surface?

One possibility, after the live DVD release at the end of the year, would be a compilation consisting of the 4 missing songs off “13” together with “Naivety in Black”, “Psycho Man”, “Selling My Soul”, maybe “Scary Dreams” and a couple of other songs from the first attempt at a reunion album. Bill Ward did mention the existence of other material in an interview last year??

More likely though, is a further release of “13” in the future with all the extra tracks (including the 3 on general release in June) on a second disc. Just like the second disc should be when it comes out…..

...Just realised that was my 13th post!!...

Well, it is almost here, the premiere of End Of The Beginning, and, more incredibly, the band Black Sabbath making its first group appearance on a National Broadcast Television show probably since 1999 when they played Paranoid on Late Show with David Letterman. After you see it, let us know what your opinion is. Does the band come across in a way that might appeal to the mainstream viewers? How were Ozzy's acting chops? And also what do you think of the first studio-quality peek of End Of The Beginning? Anybody going to intentionally miss the show so as to not dilute your first experience with the new album in June? Lets hear it!
