Like? One of my favorite bands. Favorite album? Favorite song?

    Album: Bleach

    Song: School, or Hairspray Queen.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I can't pick between Radio Friendly Unit Shifter and Heart Shaped Box off of In Utero.
This is the only Nirvana Album I own or even like but I like it a lot. I wrote them off as talentless crap till a pal laid this CD on me.
They got rid of the slick prodution and stripped down to the basics to capture a raw "live" sound and said "Fuck the record company this is what you get we don't care if it only sells 20 copies" so I consider this the only true representation of the band.

That's how they always were before "Nevermind" as well. "Bleach" is as raw as it gets.

Nirvana were just not my cup of tea. I couldn't deal with Kurt Cobain's whining. Although they did some great stuff, I just was burned out on them thanks to a)MTV and b)my ex-coworker was a massive Nirvana fan and played them so much that I just can't hear their music anymore. However, they had one of the best VMA moments when they played Rape Me at the 1992 VMAs much to the chagrin of MTV bosses as the intro to Lithium. Then Krist Novoselic got nailed in the head by his bass then Kurt smashed his guitar and Dave Grohl yelled "HI AXL!" "HI AXL!".

That VMAs was the last great one. I remember when Denis Leary gave an award with Cindy Crawford for Video of the Year he said the winner was "PETER FRAMPTON!" LOL! Also Queen won for Bo Rhap and Brian May and Roger Taylor gave a heartfelt speech for the win.

My opinion of them as changed since this. My favorite album by them is probably Unplugged (if live albums don't count then In Utero). Asking what a favorite song is is kind of pointless.

    Amen to this.

I dont usually go on bashing a band because that is tasteless to me, but I can about Nirvana because they were not a band. Why people can like this sorry excuse for a band I will never know.

Some of the music Nirvana recorded was so-so to say the least but they were buried by their severe lack of intelligent lyrics. Kurt Cobain stands as the most overrated person in ALL OF MUSIC.

Personally I'd rather be tied up in a chair, getting my toes smashed in one by one with a sledgehammer, hearing Billy Ray Cyrus, fingernails being scraped across a board and a baby screaming at the top of it's lungs all at the same time, then to put up with more than two songs of Nirvana.

That may seem absurd and a bit over the top but then again so is anyone classifying this descipable excuse of a band as a band. They are complete ......

Pretty much what I had in mind.

Quite honestly, I hate Pearl Jam and Nirvana, Alice In Chains had some good stuff, so did Soundgarden, but my all time favorite Grunge Band growing up would probably had to be Everclear, or my Black Sabbath of Grundge, as to say Nirvana being Led Zeppelin and Pearl Jam being Deep Purple in an analogical sense. Everclear to me again is what I grew up with and got me into rock at year 1997 and never disapointed me since. Granted, they had a pop thing going to them but I did not see it that way (AM Radio Single from Songs From An American Movie Vol. 1 had that feeling of a poppy sound), but to me they were at the time going through a commercial move like Megadeth and Metallica did. But in the beginning, these guys were very underrated and overshadowed to the others (Nirvana and Pearl Jam).
Let me tell you now, about a friend of mine. He tried to shoot them lights, with whiskey and the wine. He didn't get so far, ah his gun was wrong. Now my sweet friend, where's your song? Shoot out the lights, shoot out the lights.

nirvana didn't destroy other genres.the mtv created another program with some grunge songs. I remember correctly: mtv played metallica,Gnr,nirvana, pearl jam,
at the same time(season) between 1992-94 alot also. It was boring as hell. Unfortunately the nirvana is more popular nowadays.
I have a magazine with german language called MetalStar. We can read an interesting poll '94.This shows the following:
    Beliebteste Band international
    1994 '93 '92 '91 '90
    1. Nirvana 11.6 neu!
    2. Metallica 7.9 15.8 20.8 28.1 7.8
    3. Aerosmith 5.8 4.5
    skip
    6. Bon Jovi 4.5 15.0
Nirvana is nowhere in 90-92. Bon Jovi was more popular than nirvana in 1993 ! Nirvana-Nevermind released in 1991.

    Most interesting: Pein des Jahres
    4. Kurt Cobain 4.6
    5. Kurt Cobain's Tod 4.4 (Tod=death)
(Yes , what a stupid thing Cobain two times!) This means 4.cobain and 5. cobain(same guy) very ridicolous.

But the most interesting: Vocalist Of The Year 1. Kurt Cobain 13.0 2. Steven Tyler 12.2 in 1994.

    And beliebtester Bassist
    1994 '93
    1.Chris Novoselic 8.2 neu!
    He's nowhere in 91-92.
One thing sure: death is very influental thing. FACT IS FACT!
cobain and nirvana were talentless, but i think nobody believe me.

I love Nirvana. I agree that they are massively overrated, but I don't think they 'destroyed heavy metal' or anything. Even if grunge did cause metal's popularity to dwindle, it's not like it was their intention to do so. Kurt Cobain was a huge Black Sabbath fan.

Kurt's singing and playing may not have been the most technically proficient, but it wasn't supposed to be. He put his emotion into the music, which is the important thing.

I love Nirvana as well along with several other "grunge" artists like Soungarden/Alice In Chains/Pearl Jam and The Stone Temple Pilots. Along with a few others that are not so well known. I agree totally that he put his emotion into his singing which I must say he pulled of nicely. Nirvana is only a bashed band because they are so popular that some think just because of that they are no good- could not be farther from the truth.

Ofcourse Nirvana didn't kill metal. What they did (along with Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, Melvins, Mudhoney and the others) (and ofcourse along with Thrash and other "newer" metal-styles) was to kill the poseur-"metal" (glam, hair, pop, whatever you wanna call it) of the 80's, and brought it back to the 70's-sound where it belongs (throwing in a bit of punk, ofcourse..).
These bands are a 1000% more metal than Poison, Warrant, Ratt, Quiet Riot, Dokken, Van Halen, Def Leppard and shit like that...

Actually you could say Grunge saved Metal.

When I started listening to Iron Maiden, followed by Purple, then Sabbath etc etc some bands were for no particular reason doomed to be bands I hated. Nirvana was one of them, Metallica was another. My hate for Nirvana stayed with me for a long long time, despite the fact that I had only heard "Come as You Are" and "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Anyway, not too long ago I listened to the whole "Nevermind" album just to write a review on the site rateyourmusic.com. I found that while the song "Lithium" had some interestingly genuine feeling in it I just couldn't find too much positive to say about the album. I find it dull and uninspiring, still I can quite understand that some people like it. I just can't relate to the musical atmosphere, neither can I respect them much for the arrangements/lyrics/anything so yeah... Not the worst album I've heard though, it got 1,5/5 stars from me, the same rating as Adele's "21".

As i've understood you like music with atmosphere, i think it's strange you didn't like "Something in the Way". Beautiful, beautiful song.
But you know, each to his own and all that...

Yeah that actually is quite an OK song, my main problem with it is that I can't relate to their sound, I find Kurts voice much better in the more emotional parts of Lithium ("Light my candles in a daze cos I found God" is by far the best lyric line off the album imo). I don't like how it's mixed either. Having said that, if the same song with same lyrics/chords/tempo had been written and recorded by Sabbath in 1971 I might have thought it to be almost as good as the magical "Solitude". So it's not a bad song songwriting-wise, the performance, mix and atmosphere just doesn't connect with me.

Fair enough. You haven't said they suck, just that it doesn't suit your taste, which is entirely legit imo.

Few of these bands ever claimed to be metal. QR, & Def Lep were lumped into that category because the time & the scene's they came from. To me they've always been Hard Rock, which was what it was called back then. What most people call Hair Metal isn't Metal, it's Hard Rock. Furthermore Pearl Jam has always been and is still hard rock. From a musical standpoint they have more in common with Zeppelin & Neil Young etc. then Nirvana (Or any punk bands for that matter).

Grunge didn't systematically cleanse the landscape from what was popular in the 80's. What happened was what has happened since the advent of recorded music. Styles become popular and enjoy 3- 8 years of mass popularity. From that,.. 3 or 4 band's survive & thrive, and the rest move on with their lives. Then something else comes along. It's been happening since our great-grandparents were kids.

And grunge didn;t save shit. The whole reason that bands like Poison became more prevalent in the 80's was that they were mass produced product (This has also been happening since the dark ages). Motley Crue sold millions so all the record co.'s looked for a similar product. But look what happened after Nirvana.. countless sound alike's wearing flannel. Same shit... different day. Instead of promoting real artists, the labels wanted to crank out musical Big Mac's. When one label developed the Whopper, another developed their Ultimate Cheeseburger. And that still happens to this day.

Didn't mention Pearl Jam at all, i think they suck. Didn't mention Mötley either, couse they're atleast acceptable. And the grunge-thing actually made Mötley make their best album "Mötley Crüe".

I know grunge didn't erase the 80's, those bands kept on trying for a little while, flopping like a fish out of water. And any fish out of water eventually dies... And, yeah, the so-called "post-grunge" should've been killed from the start. They were mass-produced just like most of the 80's-bands.

And no, neither most of the grunge-bands nor some of the hair-bands considered themselves metal, but you know what?: Neither did Sabbath. But we still call them metal... (I actually consider them more Blues-based Hard Rock, though...)

The second most overrated band of all time.
    Whose one?

I'd actually be inclined to agree with you. I can't really object with someone of they like them, but I do view them as sort of a block from people exploring other, better, music of the same sort. I love Zeppelin, but they're the same way. Really my problem with mainstream music.

In Utero I think actually had some more interesting stuff on it than Nevermind though; there's no song of theirs that I thoroughly enjoy, but they've got alot of good material. I suppose I just don't get them.
