Default Top 5 most disapointing albums you bought

Idea taken from the maiden forum.

1) Iron Maiden - No prayer for the dying. Well I have and always have been a great Maiden fan. The 80s were amazing years for Maiden: Number of the beast, POM, Powerslave, my favorite Somewhere in time, the great 7th son. They had never let me down, so I was waiting for the new album with a lot of excitement back in 1990. Well, the first time I listened to it... What a great disapointment. Bruce sounded strained, he was growling all over the place and his operatic vocals where gone... The album was underproduced, the songs were mediocre... Fortunatly, these days I like this album a lot, but back there I was shocked.

2) Metallica - Black album. After the great And justice for all, I was waiting to see the evolution of their sound. Yeah, there was an evolution...back. Radio friendly songs without Hetfield's usually good riffs... Boring.

3) Yngwie Malmsteen-Eclipse. I am the bigest fan of Yngwie's work up to 1988. Odyssey was a great album and the Joe Lynn Turner-Yngwie combination was as great as the Soto-Yngwie one. Well, after Odyssey, Eclipse was a GREAT disapointment for me.

4) Helloween - Pink Bubbles Go Ape. I absolute adore everything Helloween did up to 1990. The 2 keeper's albums with Kiske were the peak of the (then new style) Power Metal. Pink Bubbles Go Ape was a HUGE disapointment for me and even today I don't listen to this album.

5) Manowar - The Triumph Of Steel. Well, this is not a bad album, it's just that Eric Adam's voice (maybe one of the greatest vocalists ever) begins to sound tired and not as crystal clear as it used to be. He begins to growl a bit too much. Achilles, Agony and Ecstast In 8 Parts gets boring after some minuts of bass and drum solos...

It's hard to come up with 5.....

*1 Fused. I was hoping it would be more like sabbath, but it was too much like the crappy modern metal that is so common these days

*2 Er......

In fact, that's all I can think of. I like pretty much all the CD's I own

Headless Cross - the single biggest piece of crap I have ever bought, period.

Makes all my other purchases seem like pure gold.

I can't really name any, because I usually own the albums in MP3 for a time before I decide that they are good enough to buy. Still, I regret buying 4 Black Sabbath's Ozzy era albums I own. I don't listen to any of that era anymore even in MP3.

I guess the fifth one I could throw out is Ohmwork.

I haven't had a bad purchase in a while since I usually check anything I'm interested in by mp3. Here's 5 I can think of for the last 25 years.

- Alice Cooper - Lace and Whiskey
- Steve Vai - Sex and Religion
- Iron Maiden - Seventh son........
- Deep Purple - Deep Purple
- Mother Love Bone - MLB

I can usually find something good with any album, but these ones were disappointing when I bought them, and they still do nothing for me now.

Iommi - Fused. Just what BlowOnAJug said...

Black Sabbath - Dehumanizer. At first it sounded like a really strong album, but as time went by, it just grew old...

1. AC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap

This was the first AC/DC album I bought and I had planned on buying them all. After hearing it, I'm still thinking of selling it and forgetting about AC/DC altogether. Aside from the title track and "Big Balls," the whole thing is generic rock that all sounds the same.

2. The Firm - The Firm

An album featuring Jimmy Page, Paul Rodgers, Tony Franklin (of Blue Murder), and Chris Slade. It has to be great, right? Wrong. I've heard nary a more boring album in my life. The songs are dull and it sounds like all the musicians are half asleep. I expected it to be a hard-rocking venture but instead I was treated to music I could easily fall asleep to. And not in a good way.

3. Yes - Close to the Edge

This was supposedly Yes' masterpiece, an epic album that defined the group. Well, I think it stinks. I've warmed up to the final track, "Siberian Khatru," but the rest of the album is just meandering progressive crap. How the same band made both this album and the brilliant 90125 is beyond me.

4. Queen - Sheer Heart Attack

Ok, I wanted to put Queen's "Crown Jewels" box set here, because it contains their first 8 albums and that's what I bought to obtain them. And honestly, I was largely unimpressed. I thought Queen would be a much better and more consistent band. But if any of their albums disappointed me the most, it was probably Sheer Heart Attack. Sure, I like The Game less, but I expected more from Sheer Heart Attack. There are practically no standout tracks here and I can barely listen to the album.

5. Derek & The Dominos - Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs

Well, as "Layla" is one of the greatest rock songs ever recorded, it stands to reason that Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs would probably be a great album. Well not only is it not great, it sucks. I always just skip to the very end and listen to "Layla" and "Thorn Tree In The Garden." May as well have just been a single containing those two songs, as far as I'm concerned.

1. Guns N Roses - Lies - Between Axl's EXTREMELY high-pitched vocals, and uninspired songs, I really can't get into this album. Sure, Axl has a high-pitched singing voice, but this is just way over the top.

2. Metallica - St Anger - Repetitive songs, sounding uninspired, and no guitar solos.

3. Megadeth - Risk - Borderline pop. So far removed from their best work it sounds nothing like the same band.

4. Guns N Roses - The Spaghetti Incident - Their punk rock covers album, also their last album. Most of the songs dont really go anywhere and iirc Axl doesnt even sing on a few of them. I think its Slash and Duff??

5. Black Sabbath - Never Say Die - Sorry guys, this album is just a pile of crap. Ive never heard the band say anything good about this album or even perform anything from it after the tour for it in 78. Besides the title track, Juniors Eyes, and the solo in Johnny Blade, this album puts me to sleep. Again, not the same band who recorded some of their best work.

1. Queens Of The Stone Age - Lullabies To Paralyze.

The selftitled debut was fantastic, Rated R was even better, and Songs For The Deaf is a pure masterpiece. Lullabies isn't bad as such, in fact it is quite good, but it is by far my least favourite QOTSA album.

2. Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile.

A friend of mine talked me into buying this, which I still regret very much. After about 3 minutes of annoying electronics and angsty lyrics I just gave up on it. Eventually I traded it for some Zappa CD's.

3. Clutch - Robot Hive/Exodus.

Same thing as with Lullabies. This isn't a bad album as such, but I had expected a little more variation.

4. Akercocke - Goat Of Mendes.

I'm not a huge fan of extreme metal, but somehow I ended up buying this album anyway (it seemed to be a favourite band of a lot of people I used to talk to online and it was cheap) The music itself was not THAT bad, but the lyrics really put me off. It was all "Satan this, Satan that, Satan blah blah blah". I don't mind religious lyrics as long as they are intelligent and thought provoking. But I really can't stand them if they are preachy and/or unintelligent.

5. Guns N Roses - Use Your Illusion I and II.

Sounds like something they stole from Meatloaf's bin.

I really only have 3 dissapointing cds that I bought as I enjoy all the rest I have quite a bit so I'll only list 3.

1. Whitesnake - The Best of White Snake(20th Century Remasters)

This cd had a few good songs like Here I Go Again and Still of the Night but there is just too many love songs overall that are just too hard to listen to so I dont listen to this cd much.

2. Ozzy Osbourne - Ossmosis

Kind of the same case with the Whitesnake cd. There are a few good tracks on here like Perry Mason, Thunder Underground and See You On The Other side but most of this is hard to listen to.

3. Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell

Besides the songs, Heaven and Hell, Die Young, and Neon Knights and sometimes, Children of the Sea, this cd isn't that great to me. Mob Rules is far better.

Metallica the Black album, I expected something more metal after Justice for all. But it was weak, weak drumming, lame lyrics, no pace.

Ever? That's hard to remember, but off the top of my head...

Iommi - Fused
Masters of Reality - Masters of Reality
Mountain - Climbing!
Metallica - St. Anger
Black Label Society - Stronger Than Death

The first three are pretty recent purchases of mine.

1.)Black Sabbath - Headless Cross, Im going to agree with Dio, I only like the first three songs and the rest is a pile of crap, the lyrics are crap.

2.)Black Label Society - Hangover music Vol. 6, it all starts off really classical music then its gets heavey.

3.)Dio - Srange Highways, what is this, are singing out of your ass or what? Dio is trying to sound evil on this and it sound like a piece a crap along with Tracy Gutair playing.

4.)Ozzy Osbourne - Prince of Darkness(first Disk), the only disapointment about this:

a.)all the live recording are from tribute, why can't they some boots on the first disk like the Ultimate Sin.

b.)I was hopeing Brad Gillas live playing from the Speak of the Devil would be on there.

2) Metallica-Ride The Lightning-Extremely overrated

3) AC/DC-Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap-Like someone said, just the same song repeated eight times

4) Dio-Master of The Moon-I realy wanted to like it, but I just can't

5) Dream Theater-Octavarium-I like it, but I guess I was just expecting more

Metallica - St Anger. I've never heard something as bad as this and so disappointing for a band as big as Metallica.

Ozzy Osbourne - Live At Budokan. I don't really like Zakk's harmonics everywhere and Ozzy sounds like an old and tired man when he sings.

Supertramp - Free As A Bird. Although the previous album without Roger Hodgson was good, this one was pretty uninspired, the kind of music you would hear in a supermarket.

Slayer - God Hates Us All. I liked it when I bought it but I realised that it was very uninspired and not well composed.

Placebo - Sleeping With Ghosts. I liked the previous albums, I like some songs on this one but I felt very disappointed when I heard it.

I understand Prezzy. Those two are alright tracks. But I do have a soft spot for Ain't No Fun (Waiting Round to Be a Millionaire). The song's so-so, but hearing Bon say "get your fuckin' jumbo jet off of my airport gives me a chuckle. And "Ride On" is probably my favourite track. It's so unlike them, but I enjoy it.

But don't give up on AC/DC yet. If you want their best work, look no further than "Back in Black" and "Highway to Hell". Those are the best complete albums they've released.

Agreed, "Back In Black" isn't the second best selling album of all time for nothing. "Let There Be Rock" and "Powerage" are great albums too, and you can't get a much better live album than "If You Want Blood, You've Got It".

I like that more than If You Want Blood..., though it's hard to find.

I don't think it was printed on DVD, so a VHS would be your best bet. You can buy the soundtrack, but only with "BonFire", the Bon Scott box set.

Razor's Edge is a pretty good album too.

It would probably be Black Sabbath's Greatest Hits, as it's all from their first 5 albums, all of which I would own about two months later. I hate greatest hits anyways, and I ended up giving the cd to my dad. It did inspire me to get the rest of the catalogue though, as before I had it I though Sabbath Bloody Sabbath sounded like crap.

Hmm, you said 5... It's hard, but

1. Whitesnake 1987 - good old bluesy Whitesnake turned in to a "hair band". John Sykes even tormented a classic song like "Here I Go Again" in to a "Bon Jovi wannabe-song".

2. Dio "Lock Up the Wolves" - after four brilliant albums this piece of crap came out. I just loved Dio and this album really broke my heart.

3. Dio "Strange Highways" - I was hoping so that Dio, after a rather good Sabbath album IMO, would return to his old style. There's no words for how disappointed I became when I listened to this.

4. Metallica "St. Anger" - never been a huge fan of Metallica, but kinda like them anyway, until this album came. Crap!

5. Tony Martin "Back Where I Belong" - I heard in 1994 that TM had released a solo album in 1992. I couldn't find it anywhere. Eventually I found a guy who sold his import CD to me and I paid a lot for it. I was full of expectations for this album to sound like TM-era Sabbath and... all my expectations fell flat to the ground (or actually down in the mud).

I can't think of 5 albums that disappoint me, since my mood can change from day to day. But the only one I found disappointing was AC/DC's "For Those About to Rock". Aside from the title track (which is a deserved classic) and Evil Walks, there aren't that many standout tracks to me. It's well produced, but the songs don't seem as strong as before (although it would be tough to top Back in Black).

What a good job we aren't all the same eh? It would be very boring!

For me it absolutely beggars belief to see these albums on peoples lists:

Headless Cross
7th Son (Axe Fiend - I can't believe it!!!)
Anathema - Judgement (perfect blend of Sabbath and Floyd)
Fused (best album of 2005)
Close To The Edge
Climbing!
Lock Up The Wolves

Love every single one of them!

I've bought some guff in my time. Those I remember right now are:

Mars Volta - Frances The Mute
System Of A Down - first
St Anger
Morbid Angel

I was surprised to see some of the albums listed as well. There are many of my personal favorites.

My clear cut number one would have to be Crimson Glory's Strange and Beautiful. After all these years, it's the one CD I still can't figure out. The first two were absolute classic metal masterpieces, and Strange and Beautiful just seemed like it was trying to cross the Zeppelin-clones with the band's former style. It was just horrible. I worked in a record store when this came out, and even though Crimson Glory was not a big name at that time me and my co-workers had hyped the hell out of this band so they had a pretty good following locally. We submitted a "top sales" list to Concrete Management at the time for a industry magazine they put together and when we reported "Strange and Beautiful" as our top seller that week the guy from Concrete just laughed at the time and couldn't believe it because in his words, "that album is just horrible." We agreed, but we did sell a bunch of them even though we were warning everybody that the album was nothing like their first two albums. God, to this day that CD stands out so far ahead of all the other disappointments I still can't believe it.

If anybody out there listens and loves early Queensryche you absolutely have to pick up Crimson Glory's Transcendence. What a spectacular, mindblowing CD. Just don't pick up Strange and Beautiful by accident...it could turn out to be just about as bad a mistake as a person can make.

Metallica-St. Anger: Wow, what a piece of shit. Ok kids here is a lesson to all people.

WHOOOAAAA.....I am really surprised. I cherish both these albums. Certainly not my favorite by these bands but classics nonetheless. Oh well, its your opinion I got nothing but respect....just a little shocked....

i love a mighty majority of the CD albums i ever bought over the years, but hey, i've sure got MORE than just 5 dud records in my set...lemme put down five that instantly spring to mind..

Black Sabbath---Dehumanizer--a truly dreadful, dreary drivel of generic metal that i don't enjoy owning, much less listening to, anymore..(**i don't wanna even mention Martin-era albums cos that would supply 4 out of 5 names on the list)

Deep Purple---(again i could name a few) but The Battle Rages On, ranks highest as utter unlistenable trash.

Dio---Angry Machines could be his worst solo adventure and is closely followed by Lock Up the Wolves in my 'regret buying' roster..

Rainbow----On Stage---a lousy, totally lame and annoying live effort..

Nirvana---Nevermind--gotta be one of the most over-rated grunge records of all time...if Kurt was still alive, i would definitely put this disc through a shredder ...

Some of the most dissappointing that I can remember:

Tomahawk - self-titled: I really like Mike Patton's singing and I dig Faith No More, but this album was boooring. Please have assured me that the second album is better but I'm in no rush to buy it.

Mr. Bungle - self-titled: Now, I really like "Disco Volante" and I love "California", but this album is too funk-metal for me. I still own and pull it out once a year to see if my opinion might change, but so far it hasn't.

Jane's Addiciton - Nothing Shocking: There are a couple good songs, but most of it is just really lame.

S.O.D. - Bigger Than the Devil: When I was about 15, I loved S.O.D.'s "Speak English or Die" and "Live At Budokan" albums, so when I heard that they'd reunited to do a new studio album, I was excited but this album was boring. The vocals sucked and the recycled some of their jokes ("The Ballad Of Phil H" & "The Ballad of Michael H"? Please...). The only thing cool was the cover art.

I'm not too surprised by some people mentioning "Headless Cross". It was the first Martin-era album I bought and I thought it was total shit the first time I listened to it. It sounded like the soundtrack to a bad late '80's horror movie to me. It grew on my after a few spins, but my first impression was that it totally blew.
