To give some points to referr to I give Master of Reality 10/10, Technical Ecstasy 5/10 and Seventh Star 1/10.
Please observe that this is a Sabbath scale! I don't think Seventh Star is a bad album at all.

    Now the Martin albums:
    The Eternal Idol 6/10
    Headless Cross 8/10
    Tyr 5/10
    Cross Purposes 6/10
    Forbidden 2/10

I think this is a pretty smart way of ranking the Sabbath catalog, and I would even agree with the numbers assigned to determine his baseline.

If I rate my favorite sabbath album as 10, and my least favorite as 1, (those would be SBS and NSD atm), it would look something like this:

    The Eternal Idol 8/10
    Headless Cross 6/10
    TYR 7/10
    Cross Purposes 8/10
    Forbidden 2/10

Forbidden is an amazing album, but so is NSD. Forbidden is not that much better imo, only slightly. By the way note that I turned this into a sabbath-only scale. For example I would give Led Zeppelin I a 5/10 here, and Dark side of the Moon a 9/10. Albums I consider "ok" or even "quite good" don't even fit in here, they are on negative score ^^

The Eternal Idol - 8/10 (good album, although with the DE I found I prefer it with Ray)
Headless Cross - 8/10 (good album, lyrics get a bit much)
    TYR - 9/10
    Cross Purposes - 10/10
Cross Purposes Live - 9/10 (Hoping this gets released as a Deluxe Edition!)
    Forbidden - 8/10

Had I taken this poll bak in 2007 when I joined the boards, I would have given Forbidden a 4/10. I have been giving it fresh, open minded listen as of late, and I have realized the songs are awesome. The production is what I dislike on this CD. Anxiously awaiting the DE of this album.

    Tough but I'll try

Eternal Idol 6,5/10 (Not the best one, but there are two real Sabbath classics The Shining and Eternal Idol)
Headless Cross 8,5/10 (The first side is pure gold, second side isn't quite as good)
Tyr 9/10 (Feels Good To Me brings it down, but The Valhalla Trilogy is so great it brings it back up to 9)
Cross Purposess 10/10 (This is a pretty close of being a masterpiece, not a single bad song on it!)
Forbidden 7,5/10 (This is probably the most uneven of the albums, there are some killers, Shaking Off The Chains, Forbidden, Kiss Of Death and couple of not so good ones, Rusty Angels, Sick And Tired and then the two bit unusual Sabbath numbers I Won't Cry For You and Can't Get Close Enough to You, both kind of good but not really Sabbath-like)
-Too many flames, with too much to burn, and life's only made of paper. Oh how I need to be free of this pain but it goes over and over and over again-

I only own Eternal Idol and Cross Purposes, both of which I'd rank as 7/10 (I'm a fairly harsh critic, I love both albums alot, but when compared to several others, I can't really give them anything more.)

(It comes to something when you have to quote your own posts!)

I've listened to all these albums several times over the last few weeks, and realise my original ratings are now out of date so I list my revised scores below:

Eternal Idol: 6/10 - no change.
Headless Cross: 5/10 - still not great but I like it a little better now.
Tyr: 8/10 - There really isn't a bad track on the album.
Cross Purposes: 9/10 - This is actually awesome right up there with their best.
Forbidden: 4/10 - no change, I used to like this better when it first came out.

I agree about the production, and unfortunately that's all some people seem to hear. I don't know that I would call the songs the bst of the Martin era, but I will say that if the production of Forbidden was as good as the profuction of Cross Purposes, those would bt the two best Martin-era albums by far, IMO.

The guitar sound on Forbidden is the beginning of the current Iommi sound; if only the drums weren't recorded in a cardboard box ...

If I'm thinking in terms of how these albums rank within the Sabbath catalog I might have to rank them a little lower, for instance, I would give Sabbath Bloody Sabbath a 10 but I can't really give Eternal Idol the same valued 10. So my rankings are based more on "Real World" value, meaning, this is how I would rank these albums compared to every one else.

I've gave many of these Martin songs a listen to and idk maybe I'm too old but none of these albums should have been labeled Black Sabbath. I feel the same way with Dio and Gillan as well.

The original Sabbath was in a way like the Beatles. Would they have carried on with someone to replace John Lennon if they were still together at the time of his death?
Bill Ward was right when he said that it just wasn't Sabbath anymore.

I think the name Black Sabbath was used inappropriately for way too many albums, especially the albums that were basically Iommi solo projects.

As for the songs themselves that I did manage to make it through to the end...eh nothing special imo. They sound like 1 of 100 other metal songs imo.

Tthe original sabbath put out eight of the best albums ever made.

Labeling all these other line-ups as "Black Sabbath" irks me.

Then I look at the YouTube comments saying that this lineup or that line up was the best ever and...ah nevermind, I know many people agree with me on this one.

    final thought: Money talks.
imo Iommi has put out much better material using his own name, such as the song "Meat" featuring Skin or "I Go Insane" with Hughes. plus a few other great ones.

uhm..it should give you a clue as to my rating of these albums now shouldn't it?

Sub-par albums by Sabbath standards with an occasional good song. I have the same opinion but not as strong of H&H, Mob Rules, Born Again and Dehumanizer. Doesn't mean that they're bad albums though. The Dio and Gillan stuff is still better than any other band imo. I bought all of the Dio/Gillan albums back in the day and paid for many concert tickets as well.
I don't even listen to the Martin stuff...and it's free these days.

    So there's my rating.

Sorry, bud. No one in here is going to agree with you. This is the MARTIN era section, if you don't like the MARTIN era. Go back to the OZZY era section and only post there.

Didn't know you were running the show.
Was asked for a rating and I gave one.. with an explanation as to why I think these Martin era albums are pretty much run-of-the-mill metal.

Sorry if I offend...nah not really

    Hey gl...

I think as long as your deeply held preference of the original era doesn't keep you from accepting that Sabbath has a LONG, rich musical history that is post-Ozzy... most of us here will be cool. I get where you are coming from, I just don't agree with it. I think the point that others were trying to make is with the "Martin Era" threads is a pretty strange place to state you don't care for this music AND you only accept Ozzy era stuff. Did that make sense?

There is one particular putz out here who greatly prefers the original era. (This doesn't make him a putz.) What he does that is so annoying is to post crappy little smart ass remarks on Non- Ozzy threads. His love for the original 4 is so strong that he would try to piss on the parade of the rest of us for enjoying more than one era. He believes the rest of us should think and feel the way he does.

Both of the guys who responded to your "rating" are good guys. Some of us (me included) get a knee jerk reaction when we see "newbies" make sweeping statements about the original era being the only good one/ legitimate one. As long as you keep in mind that is your opinion and that many here will respectfully (and passionately) disagree then all will be good. Welcome.
