What are your top 5 favorite guitarists? Remember, these are not necessarily the BEST guitarists, but just the ones you like the most. It'd be cool if you'd write a comment or two (like I have) as to why you feel the way you do.
1. Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath)... enough said
2. Peter Green (John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers, Fleetwood Mac)... the guy made so many excellent songs while with Fleetwood Mac in the late 60's. His style of playing was always sad and melancholy, yet intense, which is great to me. "The Green Manalishi", "Black Magic Woman", "Albatross", "Oh Well" and "Man of the World" were all written by him, and are all classics of rock.
3. Ritchie Blackmore (Deep Purple, Rainbow)... too many awesome songs, riffs, and solos to count. His work on "Child In Time" alone would make put him into the top 5 for me.
4. Robin Trower (Procol Harum)... his guitar work whenever he was called upon while he was with Procol Harum was always excellent... and his guitar tone is so incredibly cool! "Repent Walpurgis", "Simple Sister", and "Whaling Stories" represent the best of his playing while with Procol Harum (a criminally overlooked band).
5. John Fogerty (Creedence Clearwater Revival)... GREAT song writer, and his guitar playing was right up my alley. I love the solos on "I Put a Spell on You", "Susie Q", and "Walk on the Water", and his guitar riffs were always very good.

The dog's name is Pete. If he tries to mount you in the middle of the night, say "no" sternly. But don't look him in the eye.
Tony Iommi
Jimmy Page
Angus Young
David Gilmour
Jimi Hendrix
1. Tony Iommi
2. Randy Rhoads
3. Ritchie Blackmore
4. David Murray/Adrian Smith
5. Glenn Tipton/KK Downing
The last 2 have to go as duos since their sound really needs the other member of the duo.
1. Tony Iommi
2. George Harrison
3. Alex Lifeson
4. Dave Murray/Adrian Smith
5. Kirk Hammet/James Hetfield
Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath)
Ritchie Blackmore (Rainbow/Deep Purple/Blackmore's Night)
Michael Dunford (Renaissance)
Yngwie Malmsteen (Alcatrazz/Yngwie Malmsteen)
Tommy Bolin (Deep Purple/Zephyr)
Technically, James shouldn't count. He's only played a handful of metallica's guitar solos.Originally Posted By: BloodshotGtr 1. Tony Iommi

I'd say Jaymz counts because he wrote every riff until the Black Album.
Come on man. He's come up with some of the best rythms there are!
To each his own I suppose.
Whos saying hes a bad guitar player?Originally Posted By: BloodshotGtr I'd say Jaymz counts because he wrote every riff until the Black Album.

In no particular order:
Tony Iommi: Created the heaviest riffs ever, but also a great soloist and plays a lot of different styles, even touches near jazz in some of his solos. A very intense player too.
Jimi Hendrix: This guy oozed guitar, that's all he ever did, play, play then play some more. Every note in tune or not, works and is magical. Remember, this guy paved the way...can you imagine an African-American man playing the deep South in 1968, turning his Marshalls up to 11...talk about in your face, that's rock and roll!!!
Jimmy Page: Great with electric and had the touch for acoustic as well. Plays varying styles with great rythyms as well as leads.
Eddie Van Halen: Just so fluid on the fret board, like liquid...blistering leads...only limitations was inferior bandmates/songs when Hagar jumped on board.
Vernon Reid: This guy is a shreader, but as a groove too. Mostly overlooked, but he is a fantasic player.

Jimmy Page----I still find the emotion, the eloquence, the sheer variety, the immortal swagger in his playing absolutely breathtaking. Jimmy was always a supreme stylist and musical tour-de-force on his guitars.
Eddie Van Halen----The ultimate leader in a world full of followers and pretenders, Eddie remains my greatest guitar hero of all time. His white-hot intensity and fiery playing blazed the trail for tons of wanna-bes and guitar aficionados everwhere, and humbled veteran axe-men that had come before him. Eddie was a phenomenal player from the start and I can't help myself still being in awe of him. Eddie will always be a uniquely one-off, priceless, irreplaceable guitar legend to have graced this world.
Trey Azagthoth---supremely gifted guitarist that made Morbid Angel such a monstrously respected, admired and copied band in the world of Death Metal. Trey conjured up sounds with his guitar with the speed, ferocity, technical brilliance and tasteful melodies that make the mind boggle sometimes.
Chuck Schuldiner----a legend all his life, I find it tough to decide whether I love Chuck's lead vocals or his endlessly fascinating lead guitar-playing more. I guess his guitar powers have got the slight edge. Chuck truly showed how to marry sheer guitar savagery and intensity with melody and musical artwork that will forever grace the galleries of top Death Metal.
Gary Holt----a consistent, magnificent genius on Thrash guitar who I enjoy as much today as when I first heard him with Exodus. I reckon it's high praise to Gary that a die-hard thrash fan like me puts him ahead of tons of others in the genre.
So this is my latest twisted take on a thread like 5 Favourite Guitarists.

<span style="color: #3C95CB">Glenn Tipton</span>: (Because He's Glenn Tipton)
<span style="color: #3C95CB">David Gilmour</span>: (Tasteful Player. He's the one guitarist who has sampled every style of music without stepping on their toes, instead making world class players in those respective genres drip with envy)
<span style="color: #3C95CB">Ted Nugent</span>: (Music is about energy and no person is as energetic as Ted Nugent. Most entertainers that can match his intensity on stage leave alot of music out there, mostly from exhuastion. It's natural for Ted. How many other guitar players has atleast one song that is known the world over for being revolutionary, yet the most famous part of the song[the guitar solo] is recorded in one take.
<span style="color: #3C95CB">Eddie Van Halen</span>: (Beause it's Eddie. It's wrong for anyone who likes Guitar music or plays one<span style="color: #3C95CB">[especially as a professional]</span> to not atleast appreciate his importance.
<span style="color: #3C95CB">Rik Emmett</span>: (If Eddie is revolutionary than it's because he was able to SLIGHTLY expand a style invented by this man. He was playing the style people associate with Eddie, three whole years before Van Halen even became a band. <span style="color: #3C95CB">THE TRUE INVENTER OF 'SHREDDING'</span>. Listen to the Triumph song "Rock And Roll Machine" or "Blinding Light Show". The man shreds on an electric guitar then shreds even faster on an accoustic, WHILE SINGING.)
