Slow heavy with lots of haunting organ (courtesy of his faithful sidekick, Carl Westholm who is the only man to be featured in all 3 of his bands). Kind of like 'April Clouds' from the 'Abstrakt Algebra' album (that song is the scariest one I've ever heard). Must be appealing to some. I'll be getting this album shortly.
Thanks for the info, I gotta check that out.

What Sleep have you heard? I thought Volume 1 was decent, and Jerusalem/Dopesmoker to be incredibly boring, but Sleep's Holy Mountain beyond awesome. One of two albums I've heard that best capture both the style and quality of Sabbath.

I've heard Jerusalem (which is a snoozefest I agree) and Sleep's Holy Mountain. Holy Mountain is definitely better than Jerusalem/Dopesmoker, but they are trying a bit too hard to sound like Sabbath without being anywhere near as good. That and the vocals really not being my cup of tea. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I believe that it has already been released and can be ordered through the myspace.

    1. Black Sabbath
    2. Pentagram
    3. Witchfidner General
    4. Sleep
    5. Bedemon (Pre-Pentagram)
    6. Electric Wizard
    7. Candlemass

Well Bedemon was more contemporary with Pentagram, rather than pre-dating them, but a nice project/band nonetheless

Child of Darkness is the only official Bedemon release so far, but an album has been in the works since 2002.

But I saw a "Invocation of Doom" -CD somewhere, the playlist was the same as on the Child of Darkness but in a different order and some other songtitles, I think. Whats this?

It's basically the same material as on Child of Darkness, but it's an illegal bootleg and unlike Child of Darkness it was not made from the original master tapes, nor was it ever cleaned up in any way. Don't bother with it.

Good new for Saint Vitus fans! Dave Chandler has announced that a plan for reissuing the early albums (originally on SST Records) is in the works!

    http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/bla...sitemID=109025

For those of you who don't know, the band's first, self-titled LP was only available briefly on CD and their 2nd album, "Hallow's Victim", has never been issued in CD.

I see that the name Candlemass has already been brought up but I would like to double that by saying that they are the only band that conjures up the same feelings for me as Sabbath without sounding like a Sabbath clone. Definetly one of my all time favorite bands right up there with Sabbath in my humble book.

And yes the main songwriter for Candlemass Leif Edling has a solo open which is now officially out. It a very dark and heavy album and a bit of a departure from his style of writing in Candlemass.

Leif Edling also has a group called Krux which is more of a stoner rock sound very steeped in 70s doom. Worth checking out also if they haven't been mentioned already.

You really think so? I never thought that they sounded all that different from Candlemass to be honest, apart from some slightly more alternative ideas from time to time, and the voice of Mats Leven. That being said, I certainly prefer the latest Krux album to the latest from Candlemass. It's quite surprising how much the 2 differ in quality when you take into consideration that they were for most parts written by the same guy without much time between the 2.

    @ Sir Kenneth

Yes there are definetly similarities between the two bands as Leif Edling is the mostly sole songwriter for both but I feel Krux is more of a 70s doom vibe. Have you ever heard the Candlemass album "From the 13th Sun"? it is very heavy and very much sounding like Sabbath Master of Reality era. I think Krux was a natural contiuation of this era of the band.

Krux is great, although it's a slightly different direction from Candlemass. One might say, after the release of CM's King of the Grey Islands, that the two bands are starting to sound alike. Krux, to me, is more of a follow-up to the experimental albums Leif Edling released in late 90s, whether as Candlemass or Abstrakt Algebra.

And yes, From the 13th Sun is a (shameless) attempt to copy early Sabbath (but then again, looks like it's not the unusual thing in the Doom / Stoner world). I can't yet decide whether I like it or hate it. Some songs are good but the album is plagued with boring filler.

I may repeat a few already mentioned, but there should also be a few new recommendations as well. Most fall into the traditional, Sab-influenced doom category (with links to music):

    01. BEDEMON (PENTAGRAM spin-off with sometime Pentagram guitarist Randy Palmer. Since other members of Pentagram rounded out the lineup, they sound very similar)

    02. COUNT RAVEN (Swedish doom)

    03. DEATH ROW (basically mid-period PENTAGRAM once Victor Griffin joined...they changed the name back to PENTAGRAM in 1985)

    04. GOLIATH (feat. Mick Rowe formerly of TEMPEST)
    http://www.myspace.com/goliathrocks

    05. THE HIDDEN HAND (another of Wino's bands)

    06. THE HOUNDS OF HASSELVANDER (PENTAGRAM's Joe Hasselvander's new band)
    http://www.myspace.com/thehoundsofhasselvander

    07. HypNoGoG (jam-doom project of Dan Lively)
    http://www.myspace.com/hypnogog

    08. KYUSS (more finely executed stoner stuff)
    http://www.myspace.com/kyussofficialmyspace

    09. LAST CHAPTER (epic doom metal in the vein of SOLITUDE AETURNUS and CANDLEMASS with prog influences)
    www.myspace.com/lastchap

    10. MY SILENT WAKE (UK gothic death doom featuring Ian Arkley of SEVENTH ANGEL and ASHEN MORTALITY)
    http://www.myspace.com/mysilentwake

    11. THE OBSESSED (Wino's earliest band)
    http://www.myspace.com/theobsesseddoom

    12. PENTAGRAM (Bobby Liebling's brainchild with a history reaching back to pre-1971, their catalogue is very diverse)

    13. PLACE OF SKULLS (feat. Victor Griffin of PENTAGRAM/DEATH ROW)

    15. ROSE (aka RANDY ROSE feat. Randy Rose formerly of MAD AT THE WORLD)

    17. SHEAVY (the band that recorded "Electric Sleep" and sounded so much like Sabbath that the song was passed off as a rare Sabbath outtake in the early 2000's)
    http://www.myspace.com/sheavymetal

    18. SLEEP (stoner at its finest)
    http://www.myspace.com/rifffilledland

    19. SPIRIT CARAVAN (one of Scott "Wino" Weinrich's many bands)
    http://www.myspace.com/spiritcaravanmusic

    20. STARCHILD (very SLEEP-like, very good)

    21. SWEET CICADA (doom with a slightly prog vibe by Dan Lively)

Clarification to the above on #3, Death Row - This was an independently-operating band, started by Joe and Victor - They later hooked up with Bobby who had lost his entire band at the time, and operated for a little while as Death Row with Bobby singing - Given Bobby's extensive back catalog, they did a lot of his songs - Shortly thereafter, wanting to get the former's fan base along for the ride, they changed the name to Pentagram since Bobby was singing and they were largely playing Pentagram tunes.

Here's the title track to the new HOUNDS OF HASSELVANDER album "The Ninth Hour" - CRANK IT!!!

Agreed...thanks for clarifying....although Joe had already played with Bobby in the "High Voltage" era of Pentagram prior to joining forces with Victor, so the two bands are forever intertwined.

@Trog: I'm fairly new to the whole Doom Metal genre beyond Sabbath, but my interest in the genre has recently peaked with looking at Pentagram. That list of bands is certainly going to keep me busy, so thanks for that. I'm assuming those are some of the best choices for a person beginning to delve into doom metal?

Those are definitely my favorites and the ones I would personally recommend, but there are certainly a TON more. I tend to stick pretty close to the traditional doom sound created by Sabbath, so a lot of those I posted are in that vein. The genre has really exploded in the past few years though and now boasts its own plethora of sub- and sub-sub-genres.

It should also be noted that #13 above, Place of Skulls, also features Wino on 2003's With Vision. I highly recommend The Obsessed's Lunar Womb.

I also highly HIGHLY recommend Blood Farmers. I just started getting into them. They should have gotten much more recognition....

Another newer group called Orchid is pretty damn awesome too. They are pretty much a complete and total Sabbath tribute but they have a nice fresh sound.

Blood Ceremony is another great one. They are like Black Sabbath meets Jethro Tull meets Coven. Good stuff!

What do you guys think of Cathedral, my local CD shop has around 5-6 of there disks in new remastered form and with nice covers etc. I have done some reading on them and I hear that they are like a cross between Hawkwind(lyrically) and Black Sabbath(musically). I will probably probe YouTube for some of their songs; but any advice on them is much appreciated.

Cathedral is my favourite "modern" Doom band...although some call them "stoner" which is a term I've never understood. It's doom and it's simple as that.

I'd start off with Carnival Bizarre, then Etherial Mirror and Supernatural Birth Machine. Forest Of Equilibrium, their debut is a really slow and doomy album. Also from their later years The VIIth Coming is brilliant.

Lee Dorrian's vocals seem to split people a bit, I love 'em, but some hate them. But he adds a lot to the sound and his vocals are very unique.

I don't sense much similarity between Cathedral and Hawkwind or Black Sabbath (two bands I have been listening to enthusiastically for over 30 years). I'm somewhat of a newbie when it comes to Cathedral but what I've heard so far (probing youtube) I like.

If you want to get something revolutionary to doom, get Forest of Equilibrium. That album brought doom to (low) tempos and heaviness never seen before.

Other than that, The Carnival Bizarre is a very good album.

Thanks guys for all the feedback and recommendations! I have been checking them out on Youtube and I like what I have heard so far. I agree with you Franklin that what I was reading was not a true representation of their sound ...I am not seeing any relation to Hawkwind though there is definitely some Sab influences to be heard.
