Yep, Lemmy was already doing it in Hawkwind and the original Motorhead guitarist Larry Wallis was already doing it in the Pink Fairies a few years before punk became big.

After 2 weeks with everything Dio-esque (well, I was heavily stuck with the Elf albums 2 and 3, the Rainbow albums & Dio-era Black Sabbath albums), I just rocked through the FANTASTIC live DVD "Stage Fright". A powerful show indeed, a set that I too got to experience mostly during the late 2005 European tour, the sets in 2004 & 2005 were just about identical with only minor changes. This DVD is a perfect token of remembrance from the time when Motorhead was still only 30 years of age. I wonder what Motorhead will give us in this celebratory year when the band has been rocking and rolling for 35 years...at least a new album is in the works and some gigs are coming up as well, I guess another live DVD will be made to be coupled with the already made Lemmy documentary.

I noticed that also Dio was there at the catering with all the other people, giving his usual big smile while listening something that Lemmy was telling him...God I miss him!

Me & a mate went over the Roundhouse in '75 & we couldn't get in, we looked underage apparently (probably coz we were Lol!), cut a long story short, my mate was into Blue Öyster Cult who were playing @ the Roundhouse with The Pink Fairies, we found out later on the other band was the unknown (to us) > Motörhead...oh well.

I'm not the biggest Motorhead fan ever, but I like them a lot ever since I first got into hard rock/metal.

On vinyl I have "Over Kill", "Ace of Spades", "No Sleep 'til Hammersmith" and the "No Remorse" in leather sleeve mentioned above. Mine didn't smell as it was an old copy given to me.

On CD I have "On Parole", "Over Kill", "Ace of Spades" and "Bomber"

I also have "Motorhead Live: Everything Louder Than Everything Else" on VHS

I've seen them live twice. The first time was at Wembley Arena in 2001 with support from Hawkwind and Anthrax. A real treat was when Lemmy joined Hawkwind on stage for "Silver Machine". Motorhead were awesome that night. I know I said I'm not their biggest fan ever but, as a live act they're unbeatable. I've seen other bands as good, but never better.
The second time was in 2003 at Sherwood Forest. Another brilliant gig. Probably not as good as they were at Wembley, but a great atmosphere due to the venue. If you ever get the chance to see a band in a forest, do it.

Motörhead - one entertaining band for sure. Pure hard edged rock & roll, but with more versatility and dimensions than they are usually credited for. Love Me Forever is a great example of how great musicians they actually are, not that I underestimate songs like Bomber and (We Are) The Roadcrew. And Lemmy is a true legend. I have to go to one of their gigs in the future, missed one last december. Well, they gig on a quite busy basis, so I'm sure I'll catch them sooner or later.

I guess I hadn't noticed that mistake cos I wasn't even sure about the exact years of Lemmy's ouster from Hawkwind, and his swift founding of Motorhead. But hey, such lame factual errors always seriously bug me a lot, as well.

I realise how this Motorhead thread has seen a lot more traffic and very many interesting posts by many members/fans over all these months, than I had even anticipated when I first wrote the thread. And Ady, you undying Hawkwind devotee , you sure was kind enough to regularly drop by and contribute to our conversations to Lemmy's own next great band.

Motorhead forged another damnably tough motherfucker of an album, so that's the end of the debate! Their good energetic vibe seems to be a non-stop element again. The band is not aiming at anything else than to do what they like best and do it as good as they possibly can - the main thing is that the whole shebang works and that the good vibe is delivered properly & irresistibly all the way to the listener. This new album has nothing life-changing nor re-inventive (fuck can one imagine the amount of outrage if Motorhead ever changed their basic style dramatically!!!) on it...it's just a proper, heavy load of rock 'n' roll iron! The way it should be. Motorhead is and will always be 100 million times heavier & harder than what many younger bands of today are spilling out in the name of rock & metal.

I just have to take my hat off for the whole gang & especially for Lemmy for the fact that they still keep the wheels rolling with this amazingly unstoppable power, what else would these incurable rock 'n' roll fuckers do? Lemmy & the boys live to rock & rock to live. One of the finest traits of Motorhead is their timeless recognizability - when Motorhead is ignited & launched, you'll know exactly that this is Motorhead & they play rock 'n' roll!!!

Me and Motörhead have an understanding since seeing them with Fast Eddie

But I don't get the big delay between Euro and US release of the new one, my local shop's distributors still saying Feb as of last week. "Masters of Metal" tour with Heaven and Hell, Motörhead, and Priest was so excellent (I'll ignore the opening band). Had hoped promoters would continue a yearly "masters" tour but so far didn't come to pass.

At fucking last, after all the every day shit, after all the work that I've gone through during this fall and early winter, after spending tens of hours listening to Motörhead's music from 1975 - 2010...finally it happens tomorrow! Tomorrow I will jump into the 15:44 train, open a big cold can and wait for an hour and so until I reach Tampere. I have a hotel room there in the city centre, it's a 10 minute walk to the venue right next to the railway station.

And just got my Xmas gift from a friend several states away: my 5th different Motörhead hoodie
and a T-shirt I didn't have

Must say, Motörhead gear gets the point across. "Everything Louder than Everything Else" is classic.

And for just "juice" live, haven't found a match, especially close in a smaller venue.

My 1st show was with Fast Eddie, but like the current lineup best. "In the Name of Tragedy" on the Stagefright DVD
is so great, wish they also done a CD release of the show.

Metal's most under rated band and under rated musicians.

A lot of people in the States aren't really aware of how massive Motorhead were in the UK and Europe in the early 80s. No Sleep Til Hammersmith entered the British charts at #1, not the rock charts, the national charts. I can't think of another album as rough and ready as this one that achieved a similar level of sales. They also had live singles in the top 10, warts and all, again a feat unparalleled. Motorhead were a household name back then.

It didn't last of course. The Iron Fist album was a disappointment, Fast Eddie bailed out, Robbo didn't work out as a replacement (on stage at least). A lot of momentum was lost. Funnily enough, the band got another major shot at stardom in the early 90s when Sony offered them a lucrative deal. The guys delivered 1916, a fantasic album brimming with great riffs and Lemmy's usual sardonic wit. Things looked good then came the insipid March or Die. Lemmy likes to bellyache about the industry but the fact is that Motorhead didn't give us the knockout punch when the chips were down.

But a great band who have given us some great albums and are still a fearsome live proposition with Lemmy well into his 60s.

well unfortunately Motorhead cancelled the Dallas show of the Gigantour :( (lemmy was sick so last 4 dates were cancelled) so I will have to catch them this summer with Slayer, Anthrax & Slipnot - Really Hoping they will still play at least an hour long set but have a feeling they will be the early band.

Hey guys. I just recently bought 6 Motörhead albums, and I'm having an itch that needs scratching. Here's the question: is there a difference between the first album and On Parole sound wise? Do they both sound the same or slightly different. I want to pick up both, but I rather pick up one. If they both sound the same, I'll just get the one with the extra tracks (except the alternative tracks). If someone can confirm for me that would be good. Thanks.

UPDATE: It probably helps to mention that I read that both albums were recorded with different musicians. That's why I ask, if any of that is true.

Hi 8-Bit - well the on parole LP was recorded with Larry Wallis on guitar and was shelved by united artists & released once motorhead had success with the Overkill/bomber Lp's. It does have a slightly different track listing than the Motorhead Lp For me I like the Motorhead LP better - just think it sounds better than the On Parole LP. 'On Parole' sounds more like the Pink Fairies with Lemmy singing than Motorhead.
Larry Wallis was on the Pink Fairies 3rd album, 'Kings of Oblivion' and wrote most of the songs. One of the songs from that album, 'City Kids' is on 'On Parole'. There are also 3 songs that Lemmy wrote and recorded with Hawkwind, 'Motorhead', 'The Watcher' & 'Lost Johnny'.

Thanks for the info. To me the dilemma is kind of like the Eternal Idol with Ray Gillen and Tony Martin: I like to have both. So to that, I'm purchasing both On Parole and the first album.

I think, in many ways, the '75 "On Parole" versions hit me deeper than the ones on the actual more harder '77 debut "Motörhead" (though I love both albums very much).

The best example is the On Parole version of the great song Iron Horse/Born To Lose, it swings so nicely and rocks good!

I've been thinking about getting bit more into Motorhead lately...I've never really gotten into them eventhough I know some of their songs and think they're pretty damn good...

Just for some reason never took the time to really start going through their vast catalogue, but now I just heard one of their tunes on the radio and it got me thinking I should really get into this band finally...

So Seeing that there are some great Motörhead fans here so I'm asking your advice now...I have Ace Of Spades album but that's all so what others should I get to start with?

Here's my faves:
Overkill - brilliant, absolutely essential
No Sleep 'til Hammersmith - one of the greatest live albums of all time IMHO
Bomber - not as strong as Overkill IMO, but still essential
Iron Fist - often overlooked, but still lots of fun

I recently re-purchased these on CD, there are really cheap versions available with loads of bonus material, well worth checking out.

Thanks for the suggestions buddy! I pretty much thought Overkill would be a must it seems to be the classic album...so I'll be getting that for sure!

I was looking at what I had and realised I don't have much of the early stuff only Ace of Spades on CD and No Sleep on vinyl (and nothing to play it on!), plus a couple of compilations which cover most of their classic stuff.

So I've just had a quick look at Amazon and saw the Album Boxset as noted by 8Bit above for only £16 or so. It's the first six albums (Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades, No Sleep, Iron Fist and Another Perfect Day) so I'm only duplicating one of them, so I've bought that one.

I started with some of the more recent material actually including Motörizer, Kiss Of Death and Inferno...Also Overkill naturally... Next I think I'll get Bomber and 1916.
