That's just slam death. Never heard 'beatdown' used before, but yeah, that song was definitely slam. If you like that, you should check out the band I mentioned in my first reply, in you haven't already heard of them.

Umm well thats cool & all. But I just find it lacking for my tastes. It reminds me of a lot of the bands that tour with Slayer these days. I'd rather listen to Obituary & Entombed. Or Nile or Cannibal etc.

Another band I just happened to think of though for bad Death Metal is Mortification.

I find slam death has more guttural vocals such as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uvevuw-dFWo while bands like Suffokate have more of a base DM style

Well on Saturday I am picking up Benediction Transcend The Rubicon and The Dreams You Dread double CD in one package. I have been listening to Transcend via Youtube and I must say I just love it - one of the best Death Metal albums I have ever heard!
I also special ordered Altar Of Madness by Morbid Angel and it should be in early next week - cannot wait for that one as I have owned it before and know how awesome it is.

Ah, that's cool then. You already know how awesome Altars of Madness is, so there's no excuse for not owning it. Have your heard most of the other Morbid Angel albums? I think I had already told you that Benediction's 'Transcend the Rubicon' album is top-drawer stuff. So, it's great you're getting that as a double with 'The Dreams You Dread'.

I wonder if you have heard much by Malevolent Creation, mate. I feel, overall, they're much better than Morbid Angel. You must listen to them. And if you ever became a Brutal DM fan, I'm your biggest friend here.

Yep Altars of Madness is essential Death Metal but the only other Morbid Angel album I have heard is the great Blessed are the Sick and they also have it at one of the CD stores I frequent. Thinking about picking that one up as well.

You were definitely correct in saying Transcend The Rubicon is top drawer - I can't get enough of it! It certainly has given me high hopes for The Dreams You Dread. Unfortunately I will have to wait until Monday now because the person who owes me the money I was going to use to get them has asked to pay me on Monday instead.

I will give Malevolent Creation a try next, any classic albums to recommend?

    Cheers RLP4ever!

I remember how I Transcended the Rubicon back in early '93 when I got a C-cassette collection that was compiled by my school friend...ah...Nightfear...it will always be one of the most titanic death metal songs...back in those days, we're talking the early 90's and that fucking recession, I had no money to buy any albums at all, I just had all these C-cassette compilations that I made myself and with my friends at my or their place. Listening to great music was a team effort back in those days, you had to be friends with people who had the music you wanted. When someone had an original CD or C-cassette, we had to make a copy to able to listen to it on our own. Those C-cassette days, those rainy autumn nights, those cold winter twilights, they all taught me to really appreciate original albums made by my favourite bands, I realized their true worth as I had to step up to get the music I wanted. Making a C-cassette copy from a friend's original album was a task on its own, but it was also a task to get to that friend's place through the rain and frost (I was too young to be familiar with the now extinct tape-trading circuits, there were only 2-4 metal guys of my age around during the height of that fucking grunge fashion era where rich grunge-loving kids bought that shit and directed their misery towards us few metalheads). But when the riffs and rhythms finally struck me, it was more than worth it, it was a revelation that has turned into a whole life with music. Those old days also made me swear to buy the original albums one day when I had enough money from my work. I've got to say that I've succeeded very well, I've managed to get many great albums and see many great bands. The old days of metal are still burning in my veins, I will never let go. Metal is for metalheads.

In honour of Benediction, let's hear the song that deserves to be heard time and again, a song that has remained as a constant source of power through all the changing times...

Benediction's first 4 albums. Classy and powerful. I would like to see this band live, oh yes I would. Oh well, maybe the powers that be will release the mighty BoltFest night on DVDs with the headliner of headliners Bolt Thrower, our beloved Benediction, Autopsy, Greg's new Vallenfyre and of course Discharge...

Death metal is so much more than just something cool and ace-y to listen. It's about power in one's self, the oneness of friends who have been through some hard times, it's about finding some beastly thoughts and exploring the dark side of man, it's a reminder of what death can be and has been in the course of history, it's a setting of atmospheric horror in the form of music, it's also a perfect counter force against anything that tries to cut you down...it's a soundtrack in one's life.

If you buy 'Blessed are the Sick' (you should, ), then I'd tell you to also buy 'Covenant', whenever you're able to. These three are clearly the best from Morbid Angel, in my eyes. Covenant remains my favourite, and off the rest, I'd say 'Formulas Fatal to the Flesh' is my next best-liked MA record.

As for Malevolent Creation, I'd say their true classics are the debut, 'The Ten Commandments', then 'Retribution' (their best one). Off the remainder of their discography, I really like 'Eternal', 'Envenomed', and their last one, 'Invidious Dominion'. The rest are also very decent DM, including the much-maligned and under-rated 'Stillborn'. For an old-school, outstanding veteran act like MC, it's obvious how they have nonetheless been rather over-looked and under-appreciated by many DM fans who otherwise seem to know all about the likes of Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, Obituary etc....Look for 'Retribution'. Hope you find it, and more importantly, like it when you hear it.

I really liked most of your posts - but the one I really liked was Amorphis Magic and Mayhem - that is a a gateway to the other Amorphis that I am checking out - I think I have found a new band to acquire! Thanks

I will definitely be looking for Retribution by Malevolent Creation... another special order

Last night was the 2nd stop on the Death To All Chuck Schuldiner Tribute tour. All I can say is if there's still tickets available in your town grab them now.
It was pretty amazing. Assembled on one stage, Shawn Reinert, Paul Masvidal, Shannon Hamm, Steve Digorgio, Scott Clennendin, Bobby Koelble Gene Hoglan, then Matt from Exhumed, & Charles Elliot from Abyssmal Dawn on vocals/ 2nd guitar. These guys delivered first rate renditions of material from all the Death albums. The crowd was nuts from first note to last. I appreciated the fact that they hit lesser known favorites like Trapped in A Corner, Within The Mind, as well as the staples Zombie Ritual, Left To Die, & The Philosopher. Charles particularly did a great job of reproducing Chucks coarse, spiteful voice & fluid melodic guitar playing. Ive learned most of these songs on guitar, (believe me not many of them are easy to learn) but I couldn't imagine having to do these vocals & play these songs at the same time. Matt's performance was also quite exceptional, both on Guitar and vocals. He did a bulk of the Thought Patterns, Symbolic, and Perseverance material while Charles handled the first 4 Death album's material.

I had realized during their mini set of Human era material it's been just about a year since the Human re-issue was released. I had that inevitable moment of hindsight thinking "if youd told me then, in one year I'd get to see 3/4ths of the Human band play again.....etc " I was hoping they might dig out the amazing instrumental, Cosmic Sea, from Human, that would have been mind blowing.. but there was so much music and a limited amount of time, so I get why they didn't. They ended the night with all the musicians assembling on stage for a rendition of Pull The Plug. The crowd chanted Chucks name repeatedly well after the house lights came on. Overall a really spectacular performance.

Opening the show was Gorguts..(Gorguts & Atheist open in different cities, would have been cool to get them both). I have only one of their earlier albums thats never really overwhelmed me. But they sounded pretty killer last night and I got into it enough to delve further into their more recent output & see what I think.

Anyway a pretty great show overall. This tour probably won't happen again (Although I'd love if it was an annual event)..And the Los Angeles show was clearly sold out.. But I suggest anyone who can, take advantage of the opportunity if you have any chance of seeing this show..

Both The Karelian Isthmus and Tales From The Thousand Lakes are stone cold classics through and through.

Choice cuts from The Karelian Isthmus, one of the darkest, heaviest and most atmospheric death metal albums that I've ever heard...

First, the magical, mindblowing kantele intro Karelia & the opening song The Gathering...my dad's family is from Karelia, so you can imagine that this kind of music strikes me deep & hard... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wnVwbJQr0k

The Exile Of The Sons Of Uisliu... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eI-dBds21YU

The Lost Name Of God... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Jmu_RemGVI

Don't forget Abhorrence, where the roots of Amorphis first sprung to life (featuring Tomi Koivusaari)...

The Cult & Vulgar Necrolatry (later played & recorded by Amorphis)... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIsH_JPtJJw

Svart Records have recently released Completely Vulgar compilation featuring the early ‘Vulgar Necrolatry’ demo and the self-titled EP, a six-song live tape and two rehearsal songs bundled together with a professionally recharged sonic assault...

Unfortunately, the Death to All tour isn't coming anywhere near where I live, which sucks, since I would love to see it. Maybe they'll do another one in the future.

As for those Amorphis songs posted, I'm blown away. I love Finnish DM, but for some reason I've never listened to Amorphis, and man am I regretting it. It's everything I love about Finnish DM, and more. The fusion of crushing heaviness and atmospheric melody at the same time is brilliant.

Well don't give up hope... some dates had to be canceled and their plan is to reschedule the make up dates & potentially add more early 2013.

My recipe for a perfect experience of the early Amorphis is to listen to both Karelian... and Tales... albums side by side. Hey, Tales... album has some real Moog sections too, adding spice to the Oriental atmosphere of the album...

Both albums have become timeless constants. It's amazing how they have lasted through 20 years and how there's always something exciting to be found on both of them.

    I BOW DOWN TO SEKHEEEEEEEM!!!

NILE is such an amazing band that it's boundless. The inventiveness, ceaseless variance, technical virtuocity, machine-like operativeness and diverse atmospherics, interesting lyrics...they're all without an equal in today's death metal and music in general. The masterful combination of death metal and Oriental styles and sounds will never falter, this new album only solidifies my previous thoughts of this mammoth, one of a kind band.

One can surely notice that the making of this album "At The Gate Of Sethu" has been a real labor and pain of creation. Surgically sharp precision meets perfectly working and forward rushing power, where the storming riffs, lead sections and drum battery surely represent the hardest cutting edge of this genre of music. While the overall atmosphere of this album has experienced a suitable renewal, also the songs of the album are suitably different between each other and furthermore there's so much interesting stuff and changing feelings within each song. And yet, despite the certain sense of renewal, NILE has succeeded in preserving their unfailing recognizability, both in their set of stylizations and their soundscape. NILE rules sovereignly the hyper-fast riffage and slower landscaping, the violent maiming and atmospheric quietness, being perfectly able in using different rhythm patterns, tempo speeds and sounds in order to create an ultimate, breath-taking and totally lethal concoction where there's no mercy nor weakness to be found.

NILE speaks the most intricate and destructive language of the metal gods in their own unique way. Once more, after all the mighty landscapes and sensations of the previous albums, I must say that NILE did it again: a mind-blowing, immediately gripping and immersive album with a top-of-the-line soundscape, an album that will most definitely and utterly knock out and pulverize its listener into pieces.

I doubt that any other band can or will release a harder and more satisfying death metal album this year - or ever again later on. I feel that NILE has, in many ways, left the other bands of this trade, even the old legends, far behind.

Well I have recently purchased Altars of Madness by Morbid Angel - as great as I remember it - excellent musicianship
I also have finally Transcended The Rubicon and also have The Dreams You Dread- that is better than I was expecting. Benediction are excellent - I will definitely be buying more of their discography.

    My DM collection...

All of Cannibal Corpse's studio releases
Nile - In Their Darkened Shrines, Annihilation of the Wicked, At the Gate of Sethu
Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness, Blessed Are The Sick, Covenant, Domination, Formulas Fatal to The Flesh
Deicide - S/T, Legion, Stench of Redemption
Suffocation - Effigy of the Forgotten, Pierced From Within
Gorguts - Considered Dead, Erosion of Sanity
    Hate Eternal - I, Monarch
    Behemoth - The Apostasy, Demigod

I enjoy all of these pretty thoroughly, especially CC, Nile, and Suffocation... I am wanting to buy some more DM but I always find most of it is OOP sadly, where do you all recommend I go from here? I heard Severe Torture is good, and have also thought about some Death.

I would recommend these albums most warmly...

DEATH (USA) - All 7 albums from the main progenitor of the entire genre, I suggest you listen to them chronologically so you'll know the huge progression of Chuck Schuldiner (RIP)

NILE (USA) - Worship The Animal, In The Beginning, Amongst The Catacombs Of Nephren-Ka, Black Seeds Of Vengeance, Ithyphallic, Those Whom The Gods Detest...couple these with Karl Sander's solo albums Saurian Meditation and Saurian Exorcisms, make them a chronological journey through the ages and along the river Nile...

BOLT THROWER (GBR) - All 8 albums from the still reigning kings of CRUSHING HEAVY death metal, Britain's Finest unleashing fantastic tales of past, present and future wars, the honour, the glory, the terror, the suffering...like a war film in the form of death metal music.

HYPOCRISY (SWE) - The beginnings: Penetralia, Osculum Obscenum...the middle era: The Fourth Dimension, Abduction, The Final Chapter...then: Hypocrisy, Into The Abyss, Catch 22, The Arrival, Virus, A Taste Of Extreme Divinity...

AMON AMARTH (SWE) - Well, you can't go wrong with the masters of Viking death metal!!! All 8 albums will show you the way to Valhalla...

GRAVE (SWE) - Into The Grave, You'll Never See...Soulless and Hating Life...then Back From The Grave, Fiendish Regression, As Rapture Comes, Dominion VIII, Burial Ground...

UNLEASHED (SWE) - Where No Life Dwells, Shadows In The Deep...then Midvinterblot and Hammer Battalion Unleashed...

EDGE OF SANITY (SWE) - Nothing But Death Remains, Unorthodox and The Spectral Sorrows

PESTILENCE (HOL) - Consuming Impulse and Testimony Of The Ancients (undeniable European masterpieces)

ASPHYX (HOL) - The Rack and Last One On Earth...then Death The Brutal Way and Deathhammer...

HAIL OF BULLETS (HOL) - Of Frost And War and On Divine Winds (new band of old legends)

MORGOTH (GER) - Eternal Fall/Resurrection Absurd collection and debut album Cursed

Don't forget essential Finnish death metal masterpieces...

SENTENCED - Shadows Of The Past and North From Here

AMORPHIS - The Karelian Isthmus and Tales From The Thousand Lakes

If you want quality death metal, only the best, get:

Farseeing the Paranormal Abysm by THE CHASM (Or any album of theirs, really, but that one is THE BEST)
    Nespithe by DEMILICH
Slumber of Sullen Eyes by DEMIGOD

I agree completely with Demilich. Amazing band, and Nespithe is a masterpiece. I'll have to check out The Chasm. I don't think I've heard anything by them.

Well said, Kazol. And I feel just the same.

There's also Decapitated launching an upcomiing 'Summer Slaughter' tour with a bunch of other extreme bands.

Kazol, I can't help but think that we extreme metal fans are, arguably, the luckiest music fans alive-----for the sheer quantity and outstanding quality of bands, albums, tours and shows available, all year round, year after year.

Ha, where the hell did that suddenly come from, Symptoms? Or is that a private poll of yours? LOL

Cannibal Corpse, in a heartbeat, of course.

You should check out the latest Dying Fetus and Cattle Decapitation albums, soon!

I know it's been a very long time since I've posted in this thread. Hell, its been a very long time since I've posted in this forum since I've pre-occupied with a number of other things, but now I have time to once again be an active member of the forum. Sadly I must say that I've only managed to get my hands on another single death metal album since I've last talked to you all. I've found it very hard to really find any decent supplies of death metal at stores I have the ability to visit regularly. Thus the one I found was Death's Sound of Persevearance which was on sale for $8 as opposed to the usual $15-$20 they try to sale the albums at. I would love to pick up Human, Vivus!, and Symbolic, but they all suffer from rediculously high prices, with Symbolic being the worst offender at a $20 price tag for the single CD with the 4 extra demo tracks they released a few years ago.

At the store I currently visit, which is just an F.Y.E., so course selection and price isn't going to be all that great, but it's what I've got for the time being, they have Morbid Angel's two most recemt, the other Death remasters, and Napalm Death stuff. Not much to choose from, but the Napalm Death is actually what I'm hear to ask about. They've got two 3 CD packs of Napalm Death material. One which contains Diatribes, Greed Killing, and Bootlegged in Japan. The other contains Inside the Exit Wound, Word From The Torn Apart, and Breed To Breathe. I was wondering which of the two was the better to get, each are $17.99, so I'm almost tempted to buy both sets of albums, but I figured buying one would be plentyas a proper introduction to Napalm Death beyond what I've listened to on the Internet.

Also on a side note, have we heard anything else about the Death re-releases. The first 3 albums were the 3 remasters that I had been most looking forward to, so I've been waiting for quite a while for them. And also Devstorm, that Death performance sounds absolutely amazing. Wish they would do a date or two up my way

Musicman, I actually feel sad that those are the only Napalm Death stuff on offer, at the store you currently visit regularly. In all honesty, I don't really think either of those 3-disc sets is exactly worth spending your cash on, to hear Napalm Death. For starters, there are several other superior records by that band.

I know Thelemech has bought both of them, but then he's also bought (separately) and heard some of the other excellent ND albums. But if you're really tempted to buy the ND you see at that store, I'd say you should pick the 'Inside the Torn Apart'/;Words from the Exit Wound'/Breed to Breathe EP package. I think that's a better deal, and bigger bang for your bucks.

I have several albums from what is one of, if not the most abundant year of great death metal releases...1991...I would recommend any of these albums to anyone who likes real old school darkness and death...

A.R.G. One World Without The End
    Asphyx The Rack
    Autopsy Mental Funeral
    Benediction The Grand Leveller
    Bolt Thrower Warmaster
    Cancer Death Shall Rise
    Carcass Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious
    Death Human
Dismember Like An Ever Flowing Stream
Edge Of Sanity Nothing But Death Remains
    Entombed Clandestine
    Grave Into The Grave
    Massacre From Beyond
Morbid Angel Blessed Are The Sick
    Morgoth Cursed
    Paradise Lost Gothic
    Pestilence Testimony Of The Ancients
    Sentenced Shadows Of The Past
    Unleashed Where No Life Dwells

Britain's CANCER is a real killer band with searing riffs, suitable technicality vs. straightforward style and satisfying growls. I discovered the album "Death Shall Rise" some 10 years ago through my good friend at his place. I finally got the album today and I'm reveling in it's musical power and remembering the good times we had 10 years ago. "Death Shall Rise" is one of the albums that commands and gives strength to its listener to rise from whatever worldly shit...

Well they also have the most recent disc Utiltarian which I'm just as tempted to buy, but I noticed the 3 CD bundles mainly as a novice fan. So I was asking about the albums. I listened to the samples at the store and thought that the tracks sounded fine, and that the live album was better then I was expecting based on said samples. I know that they aren't particularly great albums in either case, but I figured it was a decent deal seeing as Napalm Death stuff isn't exactly the easiest to find and it's 3 CD's for $17.99. Obviously the lack of early stuff such as Scum, Harmony Corruption, and From Enslavement to Obliteration is dissapointing, but what's availible is exactly that. Soon I'll be back home and a little closer to a store that sells a much wider and better selection of Death Metal at cheaper prices then the F.Y.E. that I'm currently visiting, so I plan to look there when I get the chance. Still though it does seem like a shame to pass up either set given that it is Napalm Death were talking about. Oddly enough I would've thought that the Diatribes pack would have been the better choice seeing as I thought that Diatribes and Bootlegged in Japan were the harder to find Napalm Death albums...

Great call on the Cancer Sabbathman. I have To The Gory End and The Sins Of Mankind on CD, Death Shall Rise is the only one I am missing. I know James Murphy played with them for awhile as well. I believe there discs are hard to find now.

Yeah, my copy of the Death Shall Rise CD turned out to be the last one at the Kvlt/No Sign Of Life record store.

I trust that the debut album To The Gory End is also an album worth hunting for. I'm not always listening to albums via Youtube before I purchase them, regardless of how easy it is. I like to know, appreciate and trust other people's recommendations.

Yeah Sabbathman, good call. I decided to check out some of Cancer's material and I really liked it. Then I went looking for a CD online and saw To The Gory End on Amazon for $75 for a used CD copy.... I really enjoy the music, but it's going to be quite hard to find their CD's based on that, or at least To The Gory End will be.

I better take extra care of my copy then!!

Good to know they are going for that much.

I bought Morbid Angel Blessed Are The Sick with a bonus DVD - I was pleasantly surprised - almost more of a thrash album then a death metal release. I still like Altar better ...

The Lovecraft and Simon Necronomicon references are kind of cool.

If you like heavier-than-hell death metal with interesting stories and references (Lovecraft & Necronomicon, Middle East), then I suggest you should dive into the streams of Nile...

I always listen to Nile as a complete voyage across the entire available discography, including Karl Sanders' fantastic Saurian albums within the program...I consider the albums as "sight seeing spots" along the great river...it's so enjoyable...I'm now at the end of the mighty album "Annihilation Of The Wicked"...

^^^^ I love heavier than hell death metal

The only Nile I have heard is Those Whom The Gods Detest - and liked it quite a lot. I will definitely give more of their discography a listen since you hold them in such high regard. And I love Lovecraft and Necronomicon inspired songs/slbums. Also both CD stores that I frequent have an abundant supply of Nile disks between them, so it should not be too hard to get some Nile. What would you recommend first?
