Default Sabbath WILL return in 2012

Forget Geezer grumbling into his pint of bitter. Black Sabbath will return next year. Take a tenner down to William Hills and make that bet now.

So Geezer Butler says a Black Sabbath reunion isn’t on the cards?

Since 2010, old Geezer has taken every opportunity to blow the story out of the water every time it resurfaces.

In November last year, when RockAAA first published on-line, we ran a story in which Ozzy Osbourne admitted he’d be up for the idea, but pointed the finger at Geezer as the stumbling block. He said:

“I’m not saying I wouldn’t do it – but I’ve got another year to finish my tour. And if I do a Black Sabbath tour, Geezer has got to promise to stop moaning.”

Ozzy might be a bit addled these days, but he’s lost none of his razor sharp perception.

Then in February we ran another story in which Geezer had the final word on the matter. Obviously getting rather fed up of the constant murmurings about the chances of the original four members of Sabbath taking to the stage again, he issued a statement on his website which read:

“I would like to make it clear, because of mounting speculation and rumours, that there will be definitely no reunion of all four original members of Black Sabbath, whether to record an album or to tour.”

    That seemed pretty final.

Then as recently as today, Geezer was at it again. Intending to release a solo album and his memoirs next year, Geezer got all grumpy about the fact that speculation about a reunion refuses to go away and managed to out-do himself in the brevity stakes. When asked about the latest developments in the reunion saga he managed the terse reply:

    “No idea”

    So it’s not gonna happen…ever…period…FULL STOP…

Tony Iommi doesn’t seem so sure, though. As recently as last month, Iommi said that he thought there was a good possibility of it happening “when the time is right. If we are still alive”

Ozzy chipped in with “I never say never anymore because you never know what’s going to come around. I love those guys — Bill, Tony and Geezer.”

Bill Ward, too, seems amenable to the idea. Speaking in May he said:

“I have a complete open mind. I would be available to see what we would like to do and how we would like to do it. I would have to look at the entire picture. Would I like to? My open mind says yes!”

So are the stars aligning? What would it take to coax Geezer out on the road? Money can’t be the driving force, as Sabbath royalties are likely to keep them in luxury for the rest of their lives. They don’t need to prove anything to anyone either. Hell they invented heavy metal!

    But still……

Perhaps Iommi’s comment is the most telling -- “when the time is right. If we are still alive”

Let’s face it they aren’t getting any younger and Ozzy in particular has survived self inflicted excesses of rock superstardom which would have done for cockroaches and scorpions let alone your average Joe. Only Keith Richard and Lemmy can claim to have a constitution to match the Prince of Darkness.

But time rolls on and the longer it goes without them taking the plunge the less likely it is that it will ever happen at all, and the more likely it is that, if they do, they will be a grave disappointment to the legions of fans who would give their back teeth to see the original Sabs blast out Paranoid, and War Pigs, and Iron Man.

Let’s face it; despite a revolving door through which 21 members of Black Sabbath have passed, the only constant is Tony Iommi.

Ian Gillan, Tony Martin, Ray Gillen and Glenn Hughes have had stints of varying length as Sabbath’s singer, but only two frontmen could claim to be the real deal when it comes down to it. The passing of Ronnie James Dio ended the other version of Sabbath, Heaven & Hell, leaving the way clear for Ozzy to jump on board again and Bill Ward to nudge Vinnie Appice off the drum stool for one last hurrah.

    Will it happen?

    You bet it will!

Here’s a prediction that you can take to the bank. Black Sabbath will reform in 2012 and make their return in the UK. They will make that return at a festival and that festival may be Download, or more likely, Sonisphere.

Why? Because a festival appearance will ease them back, allow them to dip their toes in the water and test the temperature of fan reaction. Why Sonisphere? Because the festival has come of age and, unlike any other, can provide a touring showcase which Sabbath can use as a springboard to a full blown headline tour if things go well, and if the band, (particularly Bill Ward whose dislike of touring led him to depart in the first place,) actually want to make more of it.

Like Maiden and Slipknot and Metallica this year, they can opt in and out of geographical locations to suit and to diffuse the pressure of a hectic schedule.

Of course, they could utilise the mothballed Ozzfest event as that springboard, but Ozzfest is too close to Ozzy and more importantly, Sharon, and if old wounds are to be left unopened then Sabbath need to reform as a unit. Not Iommi’s band, not Ozzy’s band, just Black Sabbath, the way it was back in Aston in 1969

Will they be any good? Who knows? I only saw them once, in 1978 as they toured with a youthful Van Halen who literally kicked their collective ass, and that tour led to the demise of the band when Ozzy was sacked. I can’t actually remember if they were any good, probably because it was so fucking long ago, and I may have had a couple of beers, but mainly because it didn’t matter..they were BLACK SABBATH!

And in truth, it still doesn’t matter how good they are, because millions of fans want to see the Masters of Reality take to the stage and thousands would gobble up a festival ticket solely to see Sabbath back on the boards.

    It will happen…trust me….Ozzy’s a
    doctor.

I don't thonk "Will" is appropriate. I think "Might" would be more accurate, because it's not definite yet.

I hope your right. Tony, Ozzy and Bill would most likely be up for a tour (and maybe evern an album) but Geezer seems to be the only one not really interested. I bet if they all got together and talked about it they could coax Geezer into one last tour.

But then again, we can only hope..

Geezer would be more likely to join if their was an album to tour for.

Another one of this speculation again 'ey?

How many of these kinds of threads do we really need around here?

To me Black Sabbath pretty much died with Ronnie. I do not want another tour of War Pigs, Iron Man, Paranoid hit parade. And I know Geezer's not interested in that either, and I would seriously doubt Tony would be willing for that either after H&H which started with new songs and ended with a new album and most likely would have gone on for years with several albums if fucking cancer would not have interfered.

Also Ozzy had 8 (EIGHT!!!!) years time to get his head out of his ass and agree to do a new album on the previous reunion and it never happened...so why would it happen now? Nah. Don't think so. Plus Geezer's pretty much done writing lyrics so the band would have to hire somebody to write them...again...nah...don't think so.

Just wanted to point out that all of the things you mentioned are also speculation. We know nothing concerning what Geezer wants, what Tony is willing to do, and if Ozzy would do a new album (things can change, they might not, but they might). Educated guesses, yes, facts, no. I think the title of this thread was perhaps tongue in cheek? Nothing wrong with a little optimism in any case.

True I was speculating, but I did have some base in fact, especially what come to Geezer.

I don't think anyone here would have thought my words as absolute facts though.

The original Sabbath is one of the few bands in history that have a constant influx of new, young fans.. some of which aren't even born yet, lol.

As long as they are alive and can put on a halfway decent show then they should go for it. There is no need for any new material, I'm sure that the young fans want to hear the classics.
Hopefully the Sab-four hearts will be in it or they shouldn't bother.

Would I personally go? probably not since I've seen them many times over the last few decades.
But I do realize that there are people who were just like I was in my youth and would give their left nut to see the original Godfathers of metal.

They are all alive and look to be doing very well for their ages.
I say go for it. There is only one original Black Sabbath, the more people they play live to, the bigger the legacy.

I am realistic though and do realize that this will more than likely be the last oppurtunity for many people to see them in person as a whole band.
    The greatest band.
This is how the band started and this is how it should end. The perfect retirement tour.
Thinking about it that way..yeah I'd go.

*then Joe can move the Ozzy era to the top of the forum categories where it belongs

Im with GL797 on this, if they want to and they can they should. I would go and see them (cant have too much of a good thing). And if another thread is correct and Tony and Ozzy and meeting up and jamming you never know we might get the odd new song live if not an album.

I think it's pretty much inevitable. Too bad though. I was really hoping for some other Iommi/Butler collaboration that is not so limiting.

Only if they do another album. Otherwise fuck it. Let Iommi and Geezer work with someone else who will be WILLING to give us a new album.

errr... we do know what Geezer wants - he stated it crystal clear: no reunion with the original four.

Well sellingmysoul, I personally think you are right, it will happen next year.
But I doubt we'll get a new album, just another nostalgia tour, and I bet probably not a UK Tour again. Can you believe that since they reunited in 1997 they never once toured the UK properly, just a couple of dates every few years, a fucking disgrace for a British band.
My money's on Download Festival in UK as a starter. Andy Copping, the organiser, has already said he's got a headliner already booked for next years festival, my money's on it been Sabbath. Failing that Sonisphere's a good bet, a touring European Festival would be a good option.
Its all speculation and possibly bollocks, but I believe it will happen.

That's not true and I don't really understand why most fans can't see whats between the lines , Geezer said on many different occasions before such statement that he is opened and actually looking forward for another final Sabbath reunion where they could play new grounds the band have never been to before , a couple of months later he comes out with the brief statement that there will be no Sabbath reunion anytime soon , so obviously there were some serious talks about a reunion and I believe they were delayed or turned off by the Osbournes due to Ozzy's commitment with his current scream and the fact that he still does have one final solo album underout his contract as well ! I certainly believe Geezer was pissed off again at thought of hanging everything and wasting his time ( just like they did before) and thus came out with the brief statement regarding the current situation of any Sabbath reunion , if there is a reunion I'm more than sure that Geezer will be more than welcome to participate and will be actually looking forward to it as well !

    The comment Geezer stated earlier...

I would like to make it clear, because of mounting speculation and rumours, that there will be definitely NO reunion of all four original members of Black Sabbath, whether to record an album or to tour.

As it's apparent, he didn't say that does he personally want the reunion to happen or not. He just stated - out of frustration - that the reunion is not happening, it was an observation of the situation as he sees it. At that time he wanted to cut the mounting rumours by saying that "there will be definitely NO reunion" because that's what it seemed back then. No reunion because the whole situation seemed so out of the window.

Now, when asked "what's up?" (meaning "what's going on?" or "is something happening or not?" etc.), he said that he has "no idea". Again, he didn't say that does he personally want the reunion to happen or not. He just doesn't know "what's up".

My speculation about this situation is that maybe Geezer is very much eager for the final Black Sabbath reunion run, he's just frustrated that nothing's happening and he has to sort of keep waiting in the shallows, like a sailor who waits for the wind. I think Geezer wants a solid, straightforward closure to this just like we the fans want. A decision and the following announcement.

So, until something new and solid comes up, "there will be definitely NO reunion of all four original members of Black Sabbath, whether to record an album or to tour". We just have to keep waiting.

I have to disagree 100% with the "no album" "just tour" statement... Tony, Ozzy and yes even Geezer have mentioned it many times that a new Sabbath album was a MUST if they ever get back together.... they've already done 2 Ozzfest tours at least, they aren't going out without a new album, you can take that to the bank.

Did any of you guys saw how happy Geezer and the guys looked happy in the Heaven and Hell tours? I simply don't understand why they'd want to ruin that feeling by playing with Ozzy again and returning to the endless problems that come with that - like no album, like abandon them again for another solo album or perhaps a new stint in MTV.

Well, maybe a lot of cash.

Quoted for truth. I'm sorry, I cannot get excited about that. I just CAN'T.

Nevermind I don't want it to happen, but even if it did, I honestly can't get excited. Did people forget the mindset of how it was in 2004? Ozzy won't sing anything other than Iron Man / Paranoid / War Pigs - mostly because he can't? The same boring set list every Ozzfest? I'm sorry, unless they do a new album, I'm completely disinterested.

whoever may put a hold on it... ozzy (e.i. sharon), geezer, bill, or even tony...
    please consider this one thing...:

Sabbath must let their epic story end on a high note, and give us that last album with the TRUE sabbath. don't let it all fade away with this H&H-bullshit. Dio was never, and never will be, the right singer for sabbath.
The four of themself should understand this nolonger has enything to do with themself anymore. this is about the fans, the name "sabbath" and music history... do that last album, tour it or not (whatever), but don't let H&H be the last call... this is no longer about personal interests, it's about rock n' roll history...

don't let the sabbath legacy end with stupidities like: "said the spider to the fly..."
(i actually tried to listen to the new sabbath(yes it's "sabbath"... somewhat..)-album, it had really cool music, but at that point i could'nt bear the vocals anymore...)

think about psycho man, selling my soul, scary dreams, the music of the H&H-album(with cooler vocals) and even who's fooling who (from iommi's solo-album with ozzy and bill)...
if expanded on, there's no doubt a new sabbath-album would've been a landmark...

sabbath, please do this for us, if not for yourself, so at least that little annoying italian rainbows-&-dragons guy won't have the last say... (sorry he's dead, but i don't care, i really don't like him, never did... he ruined my favorite band...)

one last album, then you're all free to f*** away in any way you care to..

Stopped reading after last sentence. Try again and next time don't refer Dio Era Black Sabbath as "bullshit". Okay, thanks.
Let me tell you now, about a friend of mine. He tried to shoot them lights, with whiskey and the wine. He didn't get so far, ah his gun was wrong. Now my sweet friend, where's your song? Shoot out the lights, shoot out the lights.

First off, don't start the Dio vs Ozzy bullshit. I'll ban your ass. There's been enough of that. There are no "rights" on this board. It's my board, I set the rules. There's been far too much bullshit in the name of "opinion" over Ozzy vs Dio. If you can't say something that isn't inflammatory, then put a sock in it.

Second, they tried doing an album before. Sat there, and wrote in 2001. Couldn't get the job done.

At this point, they need to let it go. It's done.

Yeah, please consider this one thing, even if you are nothing but an annoying troll:

You have a right to your opinions just like we all do, but don't come here slamming Dio at our face and patronizing Black Sabbath and the rest of us with your stupid comments.

--> H&H was bullshit for YOU, Dio was never the right singer for YOU, YOU consider the lyrics as stupidities, YOU consider Dio to be "that annoying little italian"...fine. It's how YOU feel, it's YOUR opinion. But you don't have the right to come here and slam your frustrations at our faces like that, like you knew best and the rest of us didn't.

    "he ruined my favorite band..."

--> Dio didn't ruin anything, he didn't force himself into the band to ruin it for anyone. He met with Iommi, they made new music together, Dio was invited to join Sabbath. Nobody ruined anything, the band just made a reformation, moved on and survived after a near implosion and Ozzy's firing - for the reasons the rest of us know well.

And now, please feel free and happy to stick exclusively with the Ozzy era Sabbath, I presume you have the albums like I do, so go ahead and take a listen. I love the Ozzy era Sabbath too, especially the first 6 albums, I'm planning to take a good listening theme in the near future.

    So there.

    Hey Billy Underdog,

This is not a 'so-and-so sucks and I hate them' kind of board. People are here because of their mutual love for Black Sabbath. Not everybody likes all the Sabbath eras, and it's okay to say you don't, but there is no need for inflammatory, bar room blather about how one era or singer sucks and how much we hate them.

You are free to state your opinion here, but just be respectful about it. You can say you don't like Dio-era Sabbath without calling it shit. This is, in my opinion, the best metal board on the web, and I believe it is so good, and attracts so many very well-informed Black Sabbath and Heavy Metal fans, because people here don't allow all the adolescent name calling and personal attacks that goes on with many of the boards out there.

    Yep, for ME...
If you guys like it, good for you. Very good...

Sorry it came out a bit hard, it was a moment of bad judgement i guess.
the history-nerd in me really loves the whole sabbath-related story, probably because there's so much there, and since first getting introdused to sabbath 18 years ago, i've really taken the task of getting to know all eras real serious. so this isn't statements that's just thrown out there. if it helps to balance things out, i can mention i'm pretty bored of most ozzy solo-stuff too.
my point is, for ME, the magic happens with the four of them..

i'm glad other people can find enjoyment in things i can't, thats just cool for them...
i've never belived i know best in any kind of sircumstance...

don't hate me 'couse i don't like Dio, i don't hate you 'couse you do...

Sabbath must let their epic story end on a high note, and give us that last album with the TRUE sabbath. don't let it all fade away with this H&H-bullshit. Dio was never, and never will be, the right singer for sabbath.
The four of themself should understand this nolonger has enything to do with themself anymore. this is about the fans, the name "sabbath" and music history... do that last album, tour it or not (whatever), but don't let H&H be the last call... this is no longer about personal interests, it's about rock n' roll history...

think about psycho man, selling my soul, scary dreams, the music of the H&H-album(with cooler vocals) and even who's fooling who (from iommi's solo-album with ozzy and bill)...
if expanded on, there's no doubt a new sabbath-album would've been a landmark...

one last album, then you're all free to f*** away in any way you care to..
    please?

But seriously, opinions are opinions but like so many already stated, you don't have to come out as a jerk when voicing your personal views. But it seems you already noticed that you were too harsh, so if you keep it civil from now on, welcome to the board!

    hmmm...

like i've said; i'm sorry my first post was a bit hard, and i'm really suprised people got so provoked of it. i was really drunk last night, and i got very exited over a topic that means really much to me, that is the possibility of a new sabbath-album...

my real reason for joining this forum was really the thread i posted about Iommi in Tull in the relateds, couse this is something i've been thinking alot about, and i was very interested in hearing other sab-heads opinion about the issue...
if i was here "only to start shit" i would'nt have apologised twice about the way i put things on the original post on this tread.

if i get banned just for having an opinion, thats really sad, even narrow-minded.
i understand some people are sick and tired of "ozzy-only"-stances, but sorry, that's just the way my clock ticks...
i know i came across a bit to hard in my post, and i have apologised, but i still retain my rights to have my opinions, just as you've got the right to have yours... i'm even glad you got yours, couse that's what make a discussion.

"i think it's sad the opinion you had was the only one voiced" (i'm sure some of you would like to use that quote on me too..)

Word to the wise, don't get drunk and go online.. I'm not speaking for Joe, but I think if you keep your nose clean, you'll be all right. Remember, you/we are only voicing OUR oinions, have respect for others and you'll be welcome.

Okay, time to turn this thread in a positive direction. I think Billy Underdog understands where he went wrong. He is just excited at the prospect of a new Black Sabbath record with the four original members. I too am hoping for a new Sabbath album. It's a long shot, but I still think there is hope, especially after hearing in a recent interview that Tony talks to Ozzy about three times a week. Now these two guys do not have a very good track record, going way back. So why else would Tony Iommi and Ozzy Osbourne be conversing three times a week unless they are discussing how they are going to write Black Sabbath's final chapter?! Time will tell, but this makes me optimistic.

    Why would they bother?

To me, Scary Dreams was EASILY the BEST song I'd ever heard them play. It also had EASILY the WORST crowd reaction, it was near total silence. Thousands of knuckle-dragging coconutheads waiting for, .... you guessed it... Iron Man or Paranoid etc. To Sabbath, NO ONE CARES if they ever played another new song again, and with good reason - They are right. They played a brilliant new song live, and it was met with crickets and tumbleweeds. Wrongfully, of course - But still, that's exactly what happened.

Given the above, why would they bother to do a new album at all, knowing that album sales are barely a shadow of what they used to be (thanks to illicit filesharing)? All that time and energy for what, a few lousy shekels when touring and merch are the last plums to pluck? (Remember the lawsuit over the name? Merchandizing, kids...)

I'm done with Ozzy, don't ever care to hear him again. IF Sab tours, I'll go in order hear some quality musicians, not to get told "IWANNASEEYOURHANDSLETSGOCRAAZAAAYWELOVEYOUAAAAALL LL" while Tony is trying to solo.

Of course, if they do something, I'm there (trying to ignore the lumbering oaf). I'm just not holding my breath.

    NEXT.

    All the best,
    PAULIE

Sabbath has had it's day - and I guess that the Heaven and Hell reformation is as close to a true creative reunion as the band could muster and with Dio no longer with us, it's unlikely that members would pick up the pieces so quickly after Dio's passing - Geezer was probably closest to him, and I don't think he'd want to do anything Sabbath related without him - certainly not just for the money.

Ozzy would make more money on a solo album and tour than he would with Sabbath - they are a nostalgia tour with Ozzy in the band, and I think all four of them know it.

It would be nice to see a final farewell show/tour from them, but unless I see a new album available I can't believe that there will be anything new released under the name Black Sabbath.

Tony, Ozzy, Bill and Geezer will go on to new things, and all of us can share the legacy they have left us, alongside everyone else who has been in Sabbath over 40+ years.
