    Default New Mastodon tracks

Have any of you heard the new single Mastodon just released today. It's called "Spectrelight and it's got Scott Kelly from Neurosis playing on it.

Here are some other tracks the band has released coming from their new album. It's alright but a long way from the stuff off Remission.

I never remember these guys, DAMN they rock. When Bill Ward was on That Metal Show, this was the 1st group he said he would like to sit in with. High praise indeed. Love their sound, gotta buy their stuff ASAP.

I defiantly like where these guys are going, though their song writing seems to be a lot more straight forward and less proggy opposed to previous releases. I feel like while The Hunter wont be as good as Blood Mountain or Crack The Skye, it will still be a good album that I'm sure will be played many times at my house. That being said, I also feel that a good portion of fans will be disappointed and left asking "Where is old Mastodon?!" but thankfully I am not one of these close minded people. The same thing happened when Crack The Skye came out. Bands evolve over time and so does their sound.

I anticipate this new album very much so. Hope to see them hit the road and come around to my bend. Saw them on their tour for Crack The Skye in October of 2009 along with Dethklok and High On Fire and it has left me itching for another concert. Very good live band.

The Hunter (the album) is brilliant, absolutely brilliant. These guys are second only to Black Sabbath.

^What KHH said. Depends on mood of course, but I'm hard pushed to name another current band as they good as they are.

Interesting stuff, I had never given this band a chance. Thought they were just another metal'core' band for some reason.

Was watching some videos of theirs, so they share vocal duties, interesting. I'm liking what I'm hearing so far. Gonna have to pick this album up sometime.

^ I'd recommended checking out 'Leviathan' too, their second full-length - that and the new one would be good starting points for someone getting into Mastodon.

I've always liked Mastodon quite a lot; all their prior albums, especially 'Leviathan' and 'Blood Mountain' are quality American metal. I seem to enjoy listening to Mastodon much more on certain occasions than I do at other times. Overall, their brand of prog/psychedelic metal merged with sludge/thrash/groove metal always sounds interesting enough for repeat listens, from time to time.

I recently bought and have properly heard the latest 'The Hunter' album through a few times. I gotta say that it's definitely a very 'diverse', rather adventurous album in sound, songwriting approach etc.. For starters, it's probably the first (or maybe second) Mastodon album that doesn't appear to have any clear 'concept' surrounding the songs. Freed from that formula, Mastodon appears to stretch out and expand its musical boundaries. I also like how it sounds rather less progressive than the band's previous full-lengths. The songs are still very heavy, somewhat atmospheric at times, but replete with really rude riffage from Hinds and Kelliher, and a certain rocking vibe, throughout. The vocals are again a blend of the aggressive and harsh with the 'clean', as was the case in 'Crack the Skye'. I'd have preferred more of the harsh singing, though. Heck, first time that Brann Dailor (the drummer) did a fair bit of lead vocals on a Mastodon album. And yea, the drumming is pretty dynamic right through the record. Overall, I found The Hunter to be a pretty straight-forward album, on some levels, but simultaneously also a highly experimental and varied piece of work from a band that's really hit its stride. In a way, The Hunter seems to me to be a very sophisticated summation of all of Mastodon's previous albums, with a few new elements in the mix. Existing fans of the band are very likely to like the album, but then some fans may regret not having basically 'more of the same' from this very impressive, ingenious American metal act. You guys on this forum really oughta give the band and this album an honest shot.

The Hunter is the first Mastodon album I bought. I love it. I was able to preview the disc at an independent store. It was a "let's check this out for the hell of it" thing, because any time I've heard Mastodon before, I hated the vocals. Not into that type of screaming. I later found out, that someone else in the band is handling most of the vocals on The Hunter. For me, that's a good thing. If they stick with that, then they've made a new fan.

This is most likely going to be a top 3 album of the year pick for me. The songwriting is just awesome. I think this is a rare band that gets better with every release. The Hunter and Crack The Skye are both brilliant. I am really digging the vocals especially on the last two releases. Highlights are Black Tongue, Curl Of The Burl, Stargasm, The Hunter and Dry Bone Valley.
