spambots taking over the forums?

When I logged in today every forum had the same new post, from a spambot... now that post is replaced by another spambot in the dio era forums... I mean wtf, this problem just seems to be increasing forever. Can something be done Joe? I'm no good at IT, but I hope you or someone else comes up with a way to block or at least reduce the amount of spam here, it's getting on my nerves and I don't think I'm the only one. Anyway, thanks for a great site :D

"taking over" is a bit of an exaggeration, isn't it?

Report them. Damian or TJ or myself will remove them. Ultimately they can never be stopped. Steps are taken, but a determined spammer will always break through if they want to.

There are not THAT much spams here... I get more spams via SMS than here.

Still, as Joe said, you should hit the Report button here. It's a lighter grey square on the left of the darker gray bar which contains the "reply" and "reply with quote" of that post. I think this might help finding the report alert.

spam appears on a semi daily basis, and it disappears as soon as Joe or the other mods find out about it. I think they do a good job. Only way to get rid of it is if Joe closed the forums to the public and made it private, but then the lurkers couldn't see it either. Don't know about everyone else but I was a bit of a lurker for a while before I signed up. Its just something you've got to deal with in order to keep the forum open for everyone.

Because this is a relatively high traffic forum I am surprised there is not more spam here. Mods do a great job getting rid of what does pop up from time to time. There will be some spam, it is just the nature of the beast.

Last night I made a change to one of my anti spam things here. They work pretty good for awhile until the spammers capture the new methods I'm using, and then more break through again. But as was pointed out, it gets removed when seen. Just keep reporting them.

Oh, THERE'S the report button ^^ I didn't see that one before, kind of hidden away

I will start reporting all spambots I see. And no, it's not THAT much spam here, I just felt that when I logged in and saw a spambot had posted the same message on every single sub-forum maybe it was going to increase. It didn't though, spams are still merely irritating and not that big of an issue.

Cheers for the update, interesting to see details of some of the crap you have to contend with keeping these forums straight for us. I wasn't sure how helpful the info would be - glad it turned out to be useful

I was a little bored earlier and browsed some of the menus I don't usually bother with.

Under "Quick Links/Who's Online" I noticed that at least half the activity (i.e. guest users) was from "Baidu Spider", with each iteration scanning a different thread. Probably nothing to worry about, but it does make you wonder!

That spider is just checking for links to add to Baidu, which is a Chinese search engine, I believe.

i am sure that it can also be reduced by considering the relevant posts only and reporting the moderators about irrelevant posts. It should be the responsibility of each and every member. What do you think?
