Default What Albums Are You Most Looking Forward To In 2012?

As we start March we get closer and closer to the releases of new albums in 2012. 2011 I thought presented some fairly interesting stuff overall, but there wasn't a whole lot that really wowed me about the year, and nothing released was a major landmark event (Other then maybe Anthrax having a new album after 8 years.) This year though we seem to have a few more high profile releases on the way. We've already had the phenominal A Different Kind of Truth from Van Halen come out and show us how good of an album that older artists can put out. So my question to you is, "What albums are you most looking forward to this year?". These can be albums that have concrete dates, tentative 2012 release dates, or an album that has been long rumored that might materialize.

    Mine are as follows:

Black Sabbath 2012 - I'll go ahead and get this one out of the way as I expect to see it in the majority of replies to the thread. The idea that Tony, Geezer, and Ozzy are working on a concrete album is exciting enough. Obviously there is the whole Bill situation that I think concerns the majority of us, but I think were all still very curious to see how this turns out. The original Sabbath has had 3 (4 if you count Who's Fooling Who?, 2 if you don't count Selling My Soul or WFW) new tracks, and they've had varying responses. They tried to make an album once before and it didn't work. Now with Tony's cancer this could be the final hurrah for Sabbath (If it wasn't already) and they seem to be determined to make this work, so I can say I'm looking forward to it if for nothing else curiosity's sake.

Kiss - Monster - Without going into my thoughts on Kiss currently, I can say I'm looking forward to this album. I enjoyed parts of Sonic Boom and if nothing else it was better then the mach reunion album and many of the unmasked Kiss albums (Pun Intended). I'm very curious as to where they go, Tommy and Eric both have the sort of convential Kiss album under their respective belts now, so how will they evolve, if at all. Gene and Paul still have some ability to write, so there is still some potential for something.

Slash - Apocalyptic Love - Slash did right with a good start to a solo career. Sure all the commercial stuff he's did recently is laughable, but the man can still play. Myles Kennedy is an awesome singer in my mind and I'm curious to see where they take a full collaboration. You're A Lie is what we have so far and it's sort of average which worries me somewhat, but I still remain slightly optimistic for the album.

Alice In Chains 2012 - I enjoyed Black Gives Way To Blue a lot, so I wouldn't mind some more material from the band. Yes Layne not being there hurts still, but they've moved on and have a lot of potential still yet.

Soundgarden 2012 - I'm a big Soundgarden fan, enjoying all of their material, but I have to question how a new album will turn out. With every album they progressed in a different direction. Will that remain the same? In a way I hope so, in a way not. Soundgarden is great when they're playing heavier stuff and Down On The Upside missed most of that despite being a brilliant album. I'm very curious is to what it will sound like, and I think several other here may be too.

Alright that's not all I have to say, but I should probably quit for the time being.

Black Sabbath and Slash for 2012.

Motley Crue and Black Country Communion for 2013 more than likely.

There's probably an album or two that I've forgotten about as well since I have this nagging feeling that there's another one I was somewhat excited for a month or two ago. Don't really buy too many new albums as I just don't dig most of whats popular these days. Of course I will continue building my collection of older albums.

I'll just go for Sabbath, Slash and maybe AIC for now, then we'll see what time will tell.
Would be cool if a new Soundgarden-album was somewhere between Badmotorfinger and Superunknown...

New Black Sabbath, for obvious reasons.

Cannibal Corpse-Torture. From the songs we have, I think it's gonna be one of their best.

New Obituary album is supposed to come out this year. No title or date yet, but I'm still looking forward to it, since they've yet to disappoint me.

Pagan Altar-Never Quite Dead. What fan of doomy, occult metal doesn't love these guys? The new song they released a while ago sounds amazing.

And of course, the new Bedemon album, their first real studio album since their last releases were just demo compilations. I hope it can live up to the standard set by Randy Palmer, RIP.

I love a lot of your choices Sabbathman as we share quite a few. I am only going to put releases that are new albums and not Best Of's or Live CD's. These will all be purchased and not downloaded.

Number 1 is obviously Black Sabbath, no question. I am so anxious for this it is crazy.

After Sabbath the next CD I most anticipating is Moonspell - Alpha Noir (This is going to be a double CD of one disc their aggressive side and the other the more gothic side)

These I already own from 2012 that I was anxious for:

    Asphyx - Deathhammer
    To Die For - Samsara
    Primal Fear - Unbreakable
Orange Goblin - A Eulogy For The Damned
    Lacuna Coil - Dark Adrenaline
Goatwhore - Blood For The Master
Dragonland - Under The Grey Banner
Alcest - Les Voyages De Lame
Freedom Call - Land Of The Crimson Dawn
Savage Messiah - Plague Of Conscience
    Pharaoh - Bury The Light
    Eluveitie - Helvetios
    Nothnegal - Decadence

Here are some that are coming soon:

    Overkill - The Electric Age
    Unleashed - Odalheim
Testament - The Dark Roots Of The Earth
    Kreator - Phantom Antichrist
Barren Earth - The Devil's Resolve
    Borknagar - Urd
Drudkh - Eternal Turn Of The Wheel
    Ministry - Relapse
    Epica Requiem For The Indifferent
    Heidevolk - Batavi
    Naglfar - Teras
Woods Of Ypres - Woods 5
    Anathema - Weather System
    Paradise Lost - Tragic Idol
    Running Wild - Shadowmaker
Sonata Arctica - Stones Grow Her Name
    Rage - 21
Swallow The Sun - Emerald Forest and the Blackbird
    Grave
    Sodom

That is all I can think of for now but I am sure there is more. Should be a great year for music.

Hmmm, from the top of my head:

Accept- Stalingrad: Last album was amazing, Tornillo blends well with them so this should rock
Black Country Communion: 3 (assuming that's the title) They've been pretty good thus far about putting out solid albums steadily, so we'll see if we get a new one this year; it should be good.
Black Sabbath- Who knows if this'll actually happen and if it'll be good if it does; Bill not being there worries me, but hopefully it'll still be awesome
Kill Devil Hill: Vinny and Rex's new group; I think I'm gonna get supergroup fatigue soon, but this'll be good
Portnoy/Sheehan/Kotzen: Really dissapointed Portnoy/Sykes ain't happening, but this looks pretty promising too.
SOUNDGARDEN! Just got into them too....and big, this should be really good, but we'll see

The new Slash song kinda was offputting; not that memorable, but neither was By the Sword and I loved his debut, so we'll see. I liked Myles' voice alot and Slash can still play killer music, so I'm hoping for the best. Also Metallica and AC/DC are overdue for new albums, but I don't know if they'll put anything out this year.

The one I'm REALLY excited for and am crossing my fingers for is Aerosmith's new album with Jack Douglas. He was onboard their best stuff, so it's very promising that he's producing this one, but we've been promised an album since 2008, so we'll see if it happens this time.

Portnoy/Sykes folded... Well fuck I was looking forward to that one, hopefully Sheehan and Portnoy can make something out of their collaboration. As for the rest of what you mentioned I'm in line with. I had completely forgotten about King Devil Hill and Accept, very much looking forward to the both of those as well.

BCC I was waiting to post on, they've put out two phenominal albums, but I hope that they try some stufff that's really out there, or else it's just going to be more of the same, which may not be bad, but I'm afraid I'll get tired of it. Something a little more like the Fused album maybe

As for Aerosmith, well.... In the past few years I've seen Tyler deteriorate so much that I'm not sure I want anther Aerosmith album. Just Push Play wasn't really all that good and Honkin On Bobo was passable even if I did like parts of it. I'm sure the rest of the guys can play just fine, but I wonder if Tyler's involvement will be the downfall of the project...

Anyways I've got a few more I'm looking forward to that I've remembered:

Slayer - Slayer's not let me down so far, so why should I doubt them too much? It would be nice to see them try something different again ratehr than play it safe, but I'll take a new album regardless.

Metallica - After their laughable involvement with Lou Reed (Which to be honest doesn't take much away from the band, but god it's hard to stomach the album as a whole), they've been trying to recover, Beyond Magnetic was more of Death Magnetic, but like it's parent album suffers from bad production. While it's a step in the right direction, I'm still waiting for a proper Metallica album that isn't overly compressed and still to some extent catering to the people they won over with Load. Those 30 year anniversary shows showed some real potential, and I don't doubt their ability, so I want to see it happen.

Guns N Roses - Hey I can dream can't I? Unlike most people I enjoyed Chinese Democracy and I'm very curious to see what old uncle Axl has left in him. He's still got a hell of a voice that could be used well, and hopefully with the current line-up of the band we can see a more focused album rather than the all over the place CD. It would be awesome to see, but I highly doubt that it will happen.

Testament - The Dark Roots of the Earth - Testament has always been a great band, and the last album continued to show that. After the "reunion" album if you will they can only get better I'm assuming. They've all still got it so I expect something really good, shame Paul Bostaph won't be drumming though

I would much rather have Gene "The Atomic Clock" Hoglan behind the Testament kit than Boastaph any day. As much as I like Bostaph's drumming Hoglan is right up there with Lombardo and Benante as the best in the business. I can't wait.

There's still an 11 yeven years waiting period for that one...

No, really, i don't think Chinese Democracy was all THAT bad, but i think it would've come across much better if it was called what it is: a Axl Rose solo-album. But i guess he don't have any confidence in his own name (like Slash) and has to rely on the G'N'R-brand. Sad...
But as for a next album, he said his plan was Chinese Democracy to be the first part of a triology (like Use Your Illusion was a double), but then it's really about time the second part comes now.

Well the ones I know that are coming...

BLAZE BAYLEY - The King Of Metal
CATHEDRAL - The Last Spire (Final Album)
CANDLEMASS - Psalms For The Dead (Final Album)
    JON OLIVA'S PAIN - TBA
    DORO - TBA
    DOWN - EP
SLAYER -TBA (If it's gonna come out this year)
DEEP PURPLE - TBA (This might be pushed back to early 2013 though)
ROB ZOMBIE - TBA (This too might come out in 2013 rather than this year)

And even though I'm not having any really high hopes for the new Sabbath album, I'm still looking forward to it....but I'm almost 100% sure that they won't be able to beat The Devil You Know...

Those are the ones I'm really looking forward to...

One additional release no one seems to have mentioned (apologies if someone has mentioned it and I missed it) but I've geard mention of a new RUSH album that should be out in May (I can't find yet what it's going to be called).

Obviously I am also looking forward to many of the albums already mentione by others.

    1) Testament
    2) Laibach - 'We Come In Peace' (they've done the soundtrack for the film Iron Sky - in which the Nazis relocated to the dark side of the moon in 1945, and in 2018 they're coming back. It's out in April).

Overkill and Borknagar will be interesting too.

As for Sabbath, I've swayed back to low-to-moderate expectations. Looking forward to it, but not overly excited about it yet (that might change, I guess I'll give it a listen before allowing myself to become too optimistic)

I don't know I just liked the fact they had found a fairly stable drummer. I think Paul is a great person too, I love his style, as I also love Gene's. It's just I thought it was nice Paul had found another place like he did in Slayer. I think both are great drummers, I would put them both up with Benante and Lombardo, even if Gene may be better. Though I'd rather not have Chris Adler from Lamb of God standing in for any extent. No offense to him, I just don't think he fits Testament all that well.

Clockwork Angels is the new Rush album; yeah, I kinda forgot about that one; its a year and a half overdue though. The Caravan/BU2B showed real promise, those were two of their best songs in years, so hopefully that album will rock.

Also forgot Slayer, Testament, and Overkill--should all be good, all three of those bands had solid last albums.

Ahh! "Clockwork Angels" rings a bell now you mention it, thanks for that. I read it has a Japanese release in May so a rest of the world release must be around then also (famous last words!).

Just realised there's a new Stranglers album just out called Giant (probably not much interest on these boards), a little difficult to get hold of a physical copy (Play and Amazon are both out of stock and it's only just come out FFS!) so I might have to down load it instead.

Oh yeah! Forgot to mention that! Bleed Like Me was a brilliant album! I'm hoping this is gonna be atleast half as good and I'll be happy! Sadly (atleast so far) they aren't coming to Finland...but I'm still hoping.

Today I'm going to see Blaze Bayley; since I haven't exactly heard anything on his new album 'The King of Metal', I might as well just listen what they got there.

Looking forward to the new RUSH, Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, Testament, & VoiVod. I hope the Sabbath album happens, but only if Ward is involved.

dev, I've already got Napalm Death's latest, 'Utilitarian' album. I think it's a pummeling, powerhouse of a record that I'm guessing that you'd enjoy just as much as I am. I'm also expecting CC's upcoming 'Torture' disc to be an ace album, again. I reckon I won't mind checking out both Testament's and Voivod's new stuff (I wasn't even aware of it, tbh ).

Anyway, it's almost mid-March, and I've already bought and loved several new quality albums, i.e. from Van Halen, Napalm Death, Goatwhore, Asphyx, Psycroptic, and 1-2 others.

Now, as for the remainder of the year, I'm most avidly awaiting the following (ones I can remember right now )

    Cannibal Corpse ~ Torture
    Overkill ~ The Electric Age
    Ministry ~ Relapse
Municipal Waste ~ The Fatal Feast
    Fear Factory ~ The Industrialist
Kreator ~ can't remember the name

...and also strongly rumoured/confirmed new albums from GWAR, Slayer, Sodom, Marduk, Incantation, Nile, Behemoth, Autopsy, Sick Of It All, and Cathedral.

Let's see how things turn out, for the rest of 2012. I'm guaranteed to buy ALL of the new stuff from the bands I just mentioned.

Meantime, it's only VAN HALEN I'm living and loving, right now.

Hey RLP, have you checked out the new one from Biohazard? I was going to add it to my list, but I bought it the other day, so technically I'm not looking forward to it, but already enjoying it

Anyway, so far so good, I'm liking it a lot - the reunited full original line up does deliver, shame they couldn't all stick around after they recorded it, looks like this will be the last from the classic line up.

Yeah I picked up the Napalm album yesterday & totally agree. I thought Time Waits was a total surprise & an album hard to put down, and this new one follows suit.

I forgot Fear Facory had a new one coming but after liking the last release I will definitely give the follow up a chance.

Kreator are somewhat hit or miss with me but Im hopefull their latest will live up to my expectations. Same sentiments with Cathedral, their last 2 studio albums really didnt do anything for me. Knowing this is their last Im curious, but a little hesitant.

I will also add to my list the latest by Corrosion Of Conformity, which is out but I wasnt able to find a copy of. Sirus radio has been playing cuts frequently enough, and its definitely catching my attention.

Oh no, tanz, I didn't know about the new Biohazard album at all. Thanks for the mention. I like the band quite a lot; probably even started an old thread on them here. What's the new album called? Are the new songs more in the hardcore punk vein, or more heavy metal (or a cool fusion of the two that Biohazard is famous for)? I'd hope they don't dabble in the rap/hip-hop elements they occasionally did, in the past.

On another note, I wish The Misfits would surprise us fans by conjuring up an all-new record this year.. I wouldn't mind another new Danzig album, even.

    @devstorm
Glad to know that you also dig new-ND, just as I thought you would.

Yea, I hope you also decide to snap up new-Fear Factory whenever it's out (I think it might be June). Again, I'm hoping we both get lucky with that one.

I can only agree about Kreator; didn't like Hordes of Chaos much at all. But I'm a silly sucker for instinctively buying anything new by the thrash vets. Case in point: my continuing to gamble on buying Megadeth (and Anthrax ) albums

Cathedral always strikes chords with me--even their lesser, weaker albums (like their last two, I'd agree). And I'm a sentimental sod too, and given how it will be their swansong, I'd definitely buy 'The Last Spire' and expect it to be a cool coda to Cathedral's career.

Darn, dev, you give me another priceless tip here. I wasn't aware of new CoC. Do you know the band line-up for this one? And maybe I'm being very unrealistic, but I honestly hope they'd make even a partial return to their scorching and furious hardcore punk-metal sound a la Eye for an Eye/Animosity/Technocracy era. I loved that CoC greatly. Perhaps even make the new album a self-titled one. Have you heard their last one, 'In the Arms of God'? That was very decent sludge metal, if I remember right.

And, dev, you know given how many people on this forum often complain about a desperate dearth of quality new music, or admit how they dislike and/or don't even buy much new music at all, I'm sometimes honestly shocked at my own continuing habit of seeking out, finding, buying and loving plenty of quality new music, all year round, year after year.

I completely forgot about Rush's new album being on the way. I've loved listening to Caravan and BU2B, and two years is a hell of a period between lead single and album release, but if it's anything like those singles I can say it will be a brilliant album! And after hearing Stalingrad I'm also very excited for Accept's new album, Mark can do a hell of a job on lead vocals and Accept is making a fierce comeback at the moment from the looks of things.

As for the new albums front of things another one has crossed my mine being the Freddie Mercury/Michael Jackson duets recorded back in the early 80's which I'm very curious to see. I like both artists and I think that there is a lot of potential in this sort of project that has been hidden for years. And plus there's nothing wrong with a little more of Freddie Mercury's great vocals

The new album's called 'Reborn In Defiance' - you should be alright with it, as it's primarily metal driven with hardcore elements, not much in the way of hip hop creeping in, can't think of any passages that go down that route. I'm enjoying it so far, it's pretty solid and getting a few spins from me

I am picking this up tomorrow with the new Napalm Death and The first Ghost CD, should make for some good listening. And is a great way to start the new year of music - Van Halen is the only 2012 release I have so far.
