    Default The power of Sabbath

My parents (yes, i live with them at the moment, long story...) are babysitting my 2-year old nephew, which they do quite often as his mother (my sister), a single mom, works nightshift at a nursing home for the elderly.

Tonight he absolutely refused to go to sleep, crying and whaling and spun around in his bed like a drill. Both my parents had tried a long time with singing lullabies and all that stuff, for hours, and was about to give up. So i suggested i could try.

Sang Solitude for him a few times, and the boy was sound asleep.

    That's the magic of Sabbath!!!

man that's awesome! Don't do it too often though, I can imagine falling asleep to "the world is a lonely place, you're on your own" can have quite an impact on a person.

oh wait... I know it does, as I did it myself for quite a time when I discovered the song and was moody a lot in general, it had quite an effect... ^^
"There in the middle of the circle he stands, searching, seeking, with just one touch of his trembling hand, the answer will be found.
Daylight waits while the old man sings, heaven help me! And then like the rush of a thousand wings, it shines upon the one. And the day has just begun..."

I know. By the time i got into Sabbath i was old enough to atleast figure out some of the lyrics, and it had an impact on me too. Still does. But i'm not too worried about a 2-year old'll become depressed and fucked up because of the lyrics.

But the melodic structure and scale of the song do actually have alot in common with (atleast Norwegian) lullabies, which again is similar to folk-music. It's all the pentatonic scale.

    Take Taube's Byssan Lull, f.ex...

One of my friends once told me that he noticed his baby girl seemed to really like Sabbath. The girl was around one or two at the time if memory serves. I plan on playing Sabbath non-stop for my children

Just let him listen to Cathedral - Inertias Cave through earplugs. He stood there with eyes wide open and jaw dropped, but wouldn't stop listening. That kid really has a love for music, i've played everything from Black Metal to Rap for him. Loves everything...

Nice. Planet Caravan too has that lullaby/folk-music melodic structure like Solitude, as i was talking about earlier in the thread.

Soo, i've been playing my nephew Sabbath, Black Metal, Doom Metal, Hardcore Punk and so forth many times, and he's been sitting still listening for 10-15 min. several times (which is unusual for a very active 2-and-a-half year old).
Now i played him GN'R - Welcome To The Jungle. He didn't like that, it was scary...

But one thing is reassuring; no matter what i do his brain will never be as destroyed as yours...

Solitude is one of my favorite to sing as well! The key fits me well. The melodies don't have any big interval changes, which helps since I don't possess a very wide vocal range

I practice singing while accompanying myself with an acoustic daily, in order to sing decent backup vocals Well, I did a lot of choir singing when I was on the music class in the elementary school, so that has helped me a bit.

My nephew likes Let It Be a lot, I have to sing it to him pretty much every time I see him

When my nephwew was 5, I played him some Sabbath. He started to cry. When I asked him why, he said that the words were scary. He is now 36 and a hard core metal fan. Metallica is his favorite band but, he is into Sabbath as well

My other nephew (at 12) is doing a school-project in musical class today. Him on drums, a guy on acoustic guitar and a guy on the clarinet doing a small rendition of Iron Man.
So this morning before going to school he came running over to our house almost hysterical, just HAD to borrow a Sabbath-shirt from me, so he could "look the part".
    Ofcourse i lent him one...

Been trying to influence his musical taste for 12 years now, but not with too much luck. He had a little Kiss-kick for a while (not what i'd approve of the way i would when i was 13-14, but atleast it's hard rock), and there's some one-offs here and there; some Sabbath, Sunshine Of Your Love, a bit of AC/DC and such. No luck with Black, Noise or Extreme Jazz-metal though. He's mostly allround and listen to whatever's on the charts like kids that age often do.

But one thing i'm very proud of, and he's come to this without any influence from me; he pukes just by the name of Justin Bieber. So there's still hope for him.

My 3-year old nephew is on the righ track I'd say. He often asks me to play Sabbath when I'm playing guitar or he walks by my dad's stereos. He pretty much hears solely rock music from the people around him, so it's no wonder!

Oh, he even instantly recognized a Sabbath song in the radio some time ago, it was either Sabbath Bloody Sabbath or Heaven & Hell if I remember correctly His favorite band is Hevisaurus, the Finnish metal outfit aimed to child audiences

That sound like a good start. Pretty much the way i'm hoping to mold the 2,5 year-old.

Never heard (or heard about) Hevisaurus, and from your description i don't think i'll check it out either. It sound like Lordi...

Nah, they kick Lordi's sorry ass!

Their songs are actually really fun and played with the utmost professionalism. Many of their songs are losely based on classic rock/metal tunes, but the emphasis on the cheery quality of vocal melodies and lyrics make it more suitable to children like this example. I think the main riff of this track rings a bell with you

Don't like the fact they support the "dumb bass player stereotype" with this song though

    ^^^
That was actually pretty cool. Don't understand a word of what they're saying ofcourse, exept the A B C D-part, but aiming Rock/Metal at children in a "child-friendly" way like this is something i approve of very much.
Been thinking much about translating Beatles-tunes to Norwegian and make it a childs-album. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and Yellow Submarine are just a few of many good examples. Actually i got the idea from The Simpsons, that episode were Bart and Millhouse breaks into Flanders' house and find the secret Beatles-room, and Bart says that's the band on Maggies kiddie-albums...

The tune itself reminded me of old-school Metallica, btw.

Billy, do you mind making a video filming your nephew listening to Sabbath?

I've played Sabbath a couple of times for my twins, but in general they prefer bouncier music. One of them was spellbound by the Paris 70 War Pigs video though!

The neph've been very preoccupied with ghosts lately, not scared, just facinated. So when he noticed an Appetite For Destruction-patch on one of my shorts he became facinated with the sculls on the cross. So i though i'd play him a few tunes.

Now this is a kid who've loved Black Metal, Doom and Hardcore, but GN'R he found too noisy, even Sweet Child O' Mine. I find that utterly amusing

No doubt due to Rose's utterly repellent caterwauling.. The kids got taste.
