Default Backing Tracks on Wacken DVD ?

    Hi All

I just watched the Neon Nights: 30 Years of Heaven & Hell - Live at Wacken DVD and was surprised to hear the sound of rhythm guitars in the background while Tony was playing his solos.

So I've joined this forum to ask the question - did Heaven and Hell use rhythm guitar backing tapes live or did Scott Warren play rhythm guitar (he's only credited with keyboards), or is this just a case of things being "prettied up" for the DVD ?

Good question. I know both Geoff Nicholls & Adam Wakeman played rhythm guitar. I witnessed this several times. I also was on stage next to Scott Warren too for one gig, and as far as I know, he never did that; I certainly never witnessed it.

I asked Geezer; let's see if he answers me. Also, if he's had a few pints, I might get a smartass answer.

We had a thread about this when it came out, and I think we all determined it had to be overdubbed. Lots of rhythm's as well as the beginning of Bible Black were overdubbed.

Thanks for the replies guys. It would be great to an answer directly from Geezer.

I read some of the threads about the acoustic guitar on the Bible Black intro, but I couldn't find any discussions on the "extra" electric guitar that seems to appear on just about every track. Sometimes it sounds like it's doubling what Tony is playing even when he's playing chords and not soloing.

He didn't reply. But he is on the road, so sometimes he doesn't answer everything I ask him.

I personnaly think that Iommi recorded in studio the rythm guitar, because it is exactly the same sound, and the same guitar playing style.

I think the real answer is both.

I just did a comparison between the song I from the Rockpalast performance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N99th...eature=related which is 100% live, and was only 3 - 6 weeks apart from the Wacken performance, and I from Wacken http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=crxf8RDeWOA. The I compared both with Radio city.

There's definitely a second guitar on Wacken & RC, and not on Rackpalast. And there's no mistaking Tony's playing. As I stated Rockpalast is 100% live and was not altered with any post production audio whatsoever. So they certainly touched up what they intended to release on CD/DVD.

What I found interesting and didn't notice before is found on Bible Black. Tony plays the intro on his Gibson SG. The second time the intro is played an acoustic guitar can be heard accompanying Tony. This is clearly a backing track. Matter of fact is sounds like it's directly from TDYK. This is consistent between the Rockpalast performance, and Wacken. So my conclusion is some backing tracks were definitely used live, others were added in later.

    It was overdubbed.

My friend Bruce is on go-for-a-pint-sometimes terms with Iommi's producer and got the information from him. Infact when they met up shortly after the album was put out, first thing he said as Bruce walked up to him was "you're gonna ask me about that bloody extra guitar you can hear aren't you?" and Bruce said "Yes. You know me well".

it was interesting to read all your comments - I haven't watched Wacken for a bit but I remember the CD didn't really sound like a live CD at all - but that might've been 'cos of all the edits taking out the Country Girl intro and the drum solo
