This file supercedes the old file SABBAT.TXT. Enjoy! ---Joe Siegler ------------------------- A complete list of people that have been in Black Sabbath (that I know of anyway) and albums! This was short-lived, though and Ozzy came back for the next album. The line-up with Dave Walker did play live, though. They played on a BBC-TV show that I can'T think of. ------------------------------------------------- GREATEST HITS-rel DEC 77 (not an offical album) line-up ------- Ozzy Osbourne-vocals Tony Iommi-guitars Geezer Butler-bass Bill Ward-drums Gerald Woodruffe-keys Produced by VARIOUS no tour, because this was not an OFFICIAL LP. ------------------------------------------------- NEVER SAY DIE-rel October 1978 line-up ------- Ozzy Osbourne-vocals Tony Iommi-guitars Geezer Butler-bass Bill Ward-drums Don Airey-keyboards Produced by Black Sabbath tour-same (except no Don Airey) ------------------------------------------------- Between the Never say Die LP and the next one, was a troubled time for the band. Ozzy left for good. After going through a long process finding a new singer for the band, they finally settled on Ronnie James Dio (formerly of Rainbow), but at the same time, Geezer Butler quit the band. He was replaced by Geoff Nichols on bass. However, when Geezer came back, Geoff switched over to keyboards and has been there ever since. ------------------------------------------------- HEAVEN AND HELL-rel April 1980 line-up ------- Ronnie James Dio-vocals Tony Iommi-guitars Geezer Butler-bass Bill Ward-drums Geoff Nichols-keyboards Produced by Martin Birch (famous for Iron Maiden) tour-well, the tour started out with the same line-up, but part of the way into it, Bill Ward's parents died, and along with health reasons, he left to be replaced by Vinnie Appice for the rest. ------------------------------------------------- LIVE AT LAST-rel June 1980 lineup ------ Ozzy Osbourne-vocals Tony Iommi-guitars Geezer Butler-bass Bill Ward-drums Produced by ????? This is a live album of the band recorded during the Volume 4 tour (I guess that due to the songs that are on it). It was denounced by the band and by Ozzy Osbourne. This served as the major reason that Sabbath released an officail live album in 1983. ------------------------------------------------- MOB RULES-rel October 1981 lineup ------ Ronnie James Dio-vocals Tony Iommi-guitars Geezer Butler-bass Vinnie Appice-drums Geoff Nichols-keyboards Produced by Martin Birch tour-same ------------------------------------------------- LIVE EVIL-rel January 1983 lineup ------ Ronnie James Dio-vocals Tony Iommi-guitars Geezer Butler-bass Vinnie Appice-drums Geoff Nichols-keyboards Produced by Tony Iommi & Terence Butler no tour, because by the time that this album was released, the band had split. Dio and Appice left to form Dio, and Iommi & Butler began a search to start over again. They kept Nichols around and eventually settled with-------- ------------------------------------------------- BORN AGAIN-rel Aug 1983 lineup ------ Ian Gillan-vocals Tony Iommi-guitars Geezer Butler-bass Bill Ward-drums Geoff Nichols-keyboards Produced by Robin Black & Black Sabbath tour-well, although Bill Ward came back to make the Born Again album, he split again because of health reasons. He was replaced on the Born Again tour by none other than Bev Bevan (from ELO) and this line-up remained stable for the rest of the tour. However, when the tour was over, Ian Gillan left, and Tony and Geezer wondered if it was worth going through a search for a new singer (and drummer for that matter). Because Bev Bevan left, also. At this point Tony & Geez were going to put SAbbath on hold and make solo albums. For awhile this is what they did. Bill Ward came back into the fold (again), and they started another search for a singer. They went through a lot of names that were officially part of the band, but these lineups never did anything except get pissed off at each other. These names include David Donato, Ron Keel, and the singer for Kick-Axe (can't rember his name). Also they contacted big names as well. THe biggest name that was talked to (but never joined) was Robert Plant! Could you see SAbbath performing Stairway to Heaven???? Anyway, at this point, Bill Ward called it quits (again), and Iommi/Butler went their separate ways and decided to do solo projects. Iommi put together a band and started work on a solo album. About 3/4 through the album, he decided that he didn't want the SAbbath name to die. So Iommi bought up all the legal rights to the name Black Sabbath and released the next Sabbath album (which was the solo LP he was working on). ------------------------------------------------- SEVENTH STAR-released January 1986 lineup ------ Glenn Hughes-vocals Tony Iommi-guitars Dave Spitz-bass Eric Singer-drums Geoff Nichols-keyboards Produced by Jeff Glixman tour--well this line-up made it onto tour, but as usual, it didn't stay long. After about 10 or so dates, Hughes was canned by Iommi saying "He was having extreme difficulty performing the earlier SAbbath material. So was replaced by a singer from New York named Ray Gillen (no relation to Ian) and this line-up finished the tour. ------------------------------------------------- Well, after the Seventh Star album, a few things happened. First came the rumours that the line up of Black Sabbath would make it to another LP intact for a long time. Recording began on the next album with the same line-up, but part of the way through, Tony was alledegly (sp?) dissatisfied with the performances of a few of the people in the band. Some left on their own, and some were supplanted. Eric Singer recorded most of the album, but when recording was coming to a close, a name from the bands recent past came in to help out. Also, Tony was not completely satisfied with Dave Spitz either, and Bob (Ozzy Osbourne, Uriah Heep) Daisley came in to help on some tracks, and the album was finished with this line-up------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---- The Eternal Idol--Rel Dec 1987 ------------------------------ Tony Iommi-guitars (who else?) Tony Martin-vocals Dave Spitz-bass Bob Daisley-bass Eric Singer-drums Bev Bevan-percussion Geoff Nichols-keyboards Produced by Jeff Glixman, Vic Coppersmith-Heaven, & Chris Tsangerides Tour--well, as of this writing (Jan 16), Black Sabbath did play live in the U.K., but I no of no plans to play the states (yet). This is the band that went out on the road (and might yet stay stable) Tony Iommi-guitars Tony Martin-vocals Dave Spitz-bass Terry Chimes-drums (ex of the Clash) Geoff Nichols-keyboards As for the album itself, I find it a very good album. I'm not going to make th is long, because Lizard King has a review of the album in one of the DL's that pretty much shares my viewpoint. I will say this though. If Black Sabbath is going to continue, I hope that Tony settles on some sort of stable line-up. If not, PLEASE give up the Black Sabbath name, and do a solo effort. The fans that are still following the band are doing so becuase of Tony Iommi. They will follow him solo, and maybe the name of Black Sabbath can be laid to rest. BUT--as long as it's still in existance, I will continue to enjoy it. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---- Uploaded by Joe Siegler <71540,306> This file supercedes the old file BLKSAB.TXT, and the old file has been deleted.
