Black Sabbath Reunion at Ozzfest '99 June 2, Charlotte, NC

The setlist: War Pigs, NIB, Faeries Wear Boots, After Forever, Electric Funeral, Sweet Leaf, Snowblind, Into The Void, Dirty Women, Black Sabbath, Embryo/Children Of The Grave and Paranoid.

Other than "after Forver" - no real surprises. The set was shorter than the European shows. They cut "Spiral Architect," "Lord Of This World," most unfortunately, "Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath."

Tony was in top form, Ozzy was pretty good, but Bill Ward seemed to be slowing down the songs as the night wore on. Either that or our minds were melting. He's a bit out of shape and even missed a few fills (probably not apparent to to anyone who was not scrutinizing his playing like we were - I was with two drummers after all). Great, simple staging. A little pyro. Crazy ass people setting bonfires and dancing around them on the hill behind us. Some good fights. A fat girl sitting on the hill made some obscene remarks to me that I found flattering. More tattoos and body piercings than a biker bar. $6 beer. A drunk redneck guy came down from the top of the seats and climbed over row after row of seats and somehow got onstage. Ozzy gave him a big hug. You see kids, in America, anything is possible if you have a dream.

The other acts: Primus (bad sound - does not do the band justice), Slayer (I actually put in my earplugs for them - quite a compliment), Fear Factory (great cover of Gary Numan's "Cars"), Drain (hot metal chicks), Rob Zombie (big pyro, dancing girls in leather bikini's, big video of horror flix, and a pretty funny encounter with some fans up front who had signs that said "You Suck ROB"). The other bands were inconsequential - Judas Priest cancelled.

We had a great time and got up and went to work the next day. People were talking to me all day, but I just smiled and shook my head - I could not hear them. What a great time !
