Lately, "Tyr" and "Headless Cross" have been moving up on my chart. Great songs. I think the reason I rated them lower than the others is because of my personal preference of a raw and dirty sound. "Headless Cross" and "Tyr" are kind of polished and 80's sounding. Not to take anything away from either album, because I really like both. Just wish we had some live tracks or alternate takes.

That Empire albums is highly recomended to all Tony Martin fans and I read from his website that he is about to record new album with them. Sounds great.

Headless Cross (followed up and completed the re-birth I considered The Eternal Idol to be)

The Eternal Idol (the re-birth of Sabbath after two of Sabbath albums I rank among the weakest) When this album was released I couldn't stop listen to it for several months.

Tyr (still strong, but a little weeker then the first two and I really don't like "Feels Good To Me")

Cross Purposes (good but not oustanding)

Forbidden (I like the experimental spirit but I don't really think it worked! Perhaps I'm too conservative?)

1) Headless Cross(the best Sabbath album by far)
2) The Eternal Idol
3) TYR
4) Cross Purposes
5) Forbidden

The main reason Cross Purposes got 4 and not Forbidden because I believe one song changes the vote atleast for me. I believe EVERY single metal band does 1 remarkable ballad and I aint talking the sappy shitty disgusting 80's cheesy but sellable noise. Dying For Love surprised me, the best song they did since the Headless Cross album.

Funyn as I look back that song didnt make my list for top 5 songs. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/doh.gif

True, but Forbidden has "I won't cry for you. A more better sellable noise.

Sabbath was great in ballads which is surprising. Changes is the only song Sabbath ever did with Ozzy that he carried a tone in

All these albums are quite different to each other (although HC and TYR have obvious similarities, I prefer TYR, I think the lyrical content and musical variations are more interesting, there's a bit more light and shade. HC and TYR are a bit too processed and reverby for me though compared to CP and EI, I still think they are quite good albums and I do listen to them, TYR has more listens though). Tony Martins voice changes on the 5 albums and CP is my favoured version of his voice. Forbidden is an okay album, a few good songs, plus the epic Kiss Of Death. I find Forbidden listenable, but geez what a change in production compared to HC and TYR.

1. Tyr (Jerusalem is definitely one of the best TM Sabbath tracks)
2. Headless Cross
3. The Eternal Idol
4. Cross Purposes (Took me a while to get into it, but once I did, the darker edge of the album really impressed me)
5. Forbidden (extremely underrated album)

I added up your votes (did not include duplicate votes, votes that did not include all five albums, and left out Cross Purposes Live since it was mentioned so seldomly). Here are the results:

Headless Cross 122 points
Eternal Idol 110 points
Tyr 110 points
Cross Purposes 106 points
Forbidden 62 points

5 pts were given for first, 4 pts for seconds, etc.

I do not have the Eternal Idol so I can not comment on it. But I think Cross Purposes is a good solid album that does not get as much respect as Headless Cross, but is much better to me.

Ditto for me. Although I don't quite have the contempt for Forbidden as you have. There are some decent tunes in there. What about "Kiss of Death?" That is an absolutely underrated classic Sabbath track!!! I would much rather listen to that live in concert than "Iron Man".
