  • Ozzy vs Dio vs Iommi - Round 8

    Hello Everyone,

It`s been a long while since I posted one of these rounds. Actually I did make a post a while back only for the text to disappear when I clicked post :(

So I will try once again ….

In this round we finally enter the 21st century of our beloved trinity and for the first time Iommi enters the fray with his first fully fledged solo album (unless you count Seventh Star but let`s not open that can of worms just now )

How would you rank the following albums:

    Dio – Magica (2000)
    Iommi – Iommi (2000)
Ozzy – Down To Earth (2001)

I`ll post my thoughts shortly. I need to just find my notes first…

    Ozzy-Down To Earth
    IommI-IommI
    DIO-Magica

Ozzy easily, second IommI, Who's Fooling Who, pure Sabbath, in my humble opinion Magica is DIO's worst release to this day when I give it a spin and that's ultra rare, I can't stomach it.
"Without Black Sabbath there never would have been an Ozzy, and without Ozzy there never would have been a Black Sabbath"
"If there ever was a band whose voice is so significant and distinct, that band is Black Sabbath and the voice is Ozzy Osbourne"

I myself would rank them as follows:

        1) Iommi - Iommi (2000)
Tony`s first solo album had some brutal riffs. I think having different singers on each track gives the album a real colourful flavour. I am however not crazy about `Who`s Fooling Who` unfortunately.

        2) Dio - Magica (2000)
Dio seemed to go back to his roots with this album but with a twist. I really dig some of the tracks although some do fall flat to my ears so it is patchy in places. I don`t really buy the concept album idea very much and I think Dio`s intention to perform this album in it`s entirety as a setlist idea might have been a big misstep. I think it is a big improvement on Angry Machines though. Seems Dio`s popularity really started to wane around this time.

        3) Ozzy - Down To Earth (2001)
Once again it feels wrong to put an Ozzy album last but I went through the tracks one by one and I prefer the above albums more on an album basis. Not a bad album really though this by Ozzy but I can`t help but feel that this was all we got instead of the 2001 Black Sabbath album. I think Ozzy did the wrong thing in leaving this album unfinished before the guys got back with Sabbath to work on the 2001 album. Seems this album was the getout ticket he needed and we had to wait 12 years later for the Sabbath album (although I became a Sababth fan later though .

You could have said ANY OTHER ALBUM from any other point in time and IOMMI ,, and IOMMI would tie or come out on top!!

I can see that SBS,Vol 4,NSD and Paranoid is very underrated here.
