Can anyone explain to me what the Sun City controversy was all about in 1987? I've been searching for articles and info on it but for some reason, next to nothing has come up. What happened during that time in 1987, and why was it such a big deal???

Oh, something to do with South Africa's white minority government keeping the entire black population in settlements outside the cities and legally classifying them as second class citizens (if that).

Although in Garry Sharpe-Young's book, someone (Geoff Nichols?? not sure...) says that they played to a racially mixed audience, and I think the concert actually took place in that one country that's completely landlocked by South Africa, but I'm not sure. Tony Iommi said in an interview once that they were told where they'd be playing wasn't technically in South Africa, said that that wasn't true and that he felt stupid for believing it. According to GSY's book, this was actually the truth.

The big deal was that the band decided to go play in Sun City which was in South Africa while the Aparteid was still going on there. That's why Bev Bevan left the band at the time, as he didn't want to go there because of the Aparteid laws.

Later, Iommi stated they didn't know that Sun City was in South Africa at the time, but I have difficulties believing this.

My guess is that the band was in a very bad period at the time, running out of money because of the too long recording of the "Eternal Idol" album and that they were offered a lot for this series of shows.

        Re: Sun City

Technically Sun City was not in SA at the time, under our old laws Sun City was in a 'black homeland' called Bophutaswana, or Bop for short. There were several of these scattered throughout SA, blacks had self determinination and governance in these areas. They were regarded as seperate countries by the SA government and had SA abassadors etc. It's a long complicated story.

Problem was that the rest of the world decided that these areas constitued SA, and there fore Sabbath took abuse for playing in SA. I beleive Queen also got abused for the same reason some years before. Technically there was no apartheid in these 'homelands' which also ment that casinos etc could be built there.

Both enertainers and sports teams were payed lots of money to play in SA against the sanctions etc so they could well have been well paid for their visit.

No I wasn't there, I would only have been about 14 and it was about a 5-6 hour drive from where I was living at the time. Although later I did play golf at Sun City

Do you happen to know someone who was there ? After all, we don't know a lot about these shows (the South Africa area was like another planet for the rest of us at the time), so it would be nice if someone could tell us how it was

And if anyone has or knows someone who has a recording of one of these shows, PLEASE PM ME !!!

Yeah I subsequently worked with a guy who had been to one of the shows. He knew about Sabbath but was not a die hard fan. I remember him saying that the shows were not that great, even considering the almost complete lack of international bands that we got to see. Aparantley they were not sold out, I think they payed about 6 shows over three weekends.

I am pretty sure that there are recordings, I am sure I heard one many years ago. Maybe it was recorded by BOB TV or Radio or something, but I could be wrong.

I think the book also mentions that Geezer was even considering joining back at the time, but this made him change his mind. Also, there were lots of other rock musicians explicitly condemning Sun City at the time, particularly a multi-artist collaboration called Artists United Against Apartheid (their big song having a chorus of "I ain't gonna play Sun City", no less!)

If these had surfaced already, I think you should have seen the Japanese bootleg a long time ago. But they haven't yet, so...

I'm almost positive that a bootleg of Athens '87 exists, I've just never seen it.

I hope you're right, as this would be quite an historic recording : the only show by the Iommi / Martin / Spitz / Bevan / Nicholls line up ever
