• Does anyone know what the "The Jams" means???

I have an album by an old Detroit band called "MC5", or "Motor City 5", the album a live one is called "Kick Out
the Jams", they also did a song called "Kick out the Jams".

Could someone please tell me "What" or "Who", The Jams are
or were, The album came out in 1968, but is still popular and available on C.D., It's possible that it was a slang term used in Detroit only, I dunno, "MC5" were like a very
early version of the Ramones or New York Dolls, sorta proto
Punk...........

Re: Does anyone know what the "The Jams" means???

jam is a musical term reffering to musical rehersals

like "hey man, you wanna jam some time?"

so if a live album was called "kick out the jams", it just means its not recorded in a studio basically

Ozzy said most of Sabbath;s songs came from the band jamming. Supernaut, Sabbara Cadabra are great jam songs and in turn derived the jam song What To Do

Sleeping here with you tonight

Thanks for responding, Psycho Man and Siamese Mojo, and what you have both said may well be the answer, of course I
know that a "Jam" is musical term for a band playing and
improvising and having fun with an idea, so I appreciate what you have both said...but I have an uneasy feeling that
what the "MC5" were referring to was something to do with the taking over of Detroit in the late 1960's by "Soul" music, and the racial tensions felt by some White sections of the Detroit youth at that time, but I can't be sure?
I hope you guy's are right and that's all it is, but I'll
wait and see if I get any other view points on this?

naw I just think its a slang saying like "lets take a whack at it" "Kick Out" IMO means to bring forth. So they are saying they are gonna play jams. Maybe someone who was actually alive in the sixties can verify that "kick out" was a slang term used
"I want to tell you, yeah
How Good It Feels

If you're interested in a hearing a band who are influenced by Sabbath (imho that is) and hear them jamming, then go to "The Devil Rides In" thread on Other Bands board.

Alternatively, go to the following site:
www.jamscapes.com

Once there, click on "Music/Links" at the top of the page, then select Track 2 "Chill" then Track 3 "Lounge" - the weblink quality is only 35kbps so kinda rough but the free CD is much better and sounds superb - leave details and a few days later a free CD arrives through your door.

Also, click onto the video link at the same site "To see Cudamantra in more familar guise..." - once the page opens up, go down past all the other bands there to the bottom of the page and click on "The Devil Rides In" - an apearance by this Birmingham band - Cudamantra - in the US.

Being a Birmingham band, it does seem as if Tony Iommi could well be the guitarist's hero - and no bad thing!
