  • 25 Metal Albums Everybody Should Own?

I believe there was a thread on the matter some time ago, by... Nero? But it seems to have died off, been buried by a bunch of other junk.

The topic is simple. Basically, post 25 metal albums that, in your opinion, no household should be without (You can do EPs too, if you like).

    Here's mine, sorted alphabetically:

01 - 3 Inches of Blood - Advance and Vanquish
    02 - Arsis - A Celebration of Guilt
    03 - Arsis - A Diamond For Disease [EP]
04 - Behemoth - ...And The Forests Dream Eternally
    05 - Behemoth - Demigod
    06 - Black Sabbath - Born Again
    07 - Black Sabbath - Dehumanizer
08 - Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss
    09 - Burzum - Filosofem
    10 - Candlemass - Epicus Doomicus Metallicus
    11 - Children of Bodom - Hatebreeder
12 - Children of Bodom - Follow the Reaper
    13 - Cryptopsy - None So Vile
    14 - Darkthrone - Transilvanian Hunger
    15 - Darkthrone - Sardonic Wrath
    16 - Dragonforce - Inhuman Rampage
17 - Iced Earth - Something Wicked This Way Comes
    18 - Iced Earth - Horror Show
    19 - In Flames - Whoracle
20 - Metallica - ...And Justice For All
    21 - Nagelfar - Virus West
    22 - Necrophagist - Onset of Putrefaction
    23 - Sodom - Persecution Mania
    24 - Turisas - The Varangian Way
    25 - Wintersun - Wintersun

I'm curious to see everybody's choices, and the discussion that sparks from it.

Re: 25 Metal Albums Everybody Should Own?

It was in the Other Bands Forum, but meh. Anyway:

Note: There is a question on whether some of these bands are metal or not, but I have to say that some of these bands could of been metal and they have inspired many other bands.

No particular order, 8bit's Random "Metal" record list and commentary:
    Megadeth - Rust In Peace
    Megadeth - Peace Sells...But Who's Buying?
    Anthrax - Among The Living
    Anthrax - Spread The Disease
Anthrax - The Greater Of Two Evils (For those who like other singers to sing other people's songs, this is a very great example of what a Greatest Hits cd should of been: Half GH/Half being played by the current line-up IE John Bush FTW (Fuck The Wha, or rather For The Win, but I like previous definition PS I like Joey to.)
Led Zeppelin - Houses Of The Holy (Again, this band pretty much inspired half the metal bands of the future like Sabbath or Deep Purple did. Not to mention that this is IMHO the most diverse album LZ ever did.)
    Led Zeppelin - I
    Led Zeppelin - II
Led Zeppelin - " " (No title, but basically a lot would consider the "Holy Grail" of LZ enthusiasts.)
Van Halen - Fair Warning (Could of been a Metal record. Mean Street explains this very well.)
    Van Halen - I (Do I really need to explain this?}
Black Sabbath - Heaven And Hell (Showed me the light of different line-ups)
Slayer - Reign In Blood ("Now I shall reign in blood!")
Metallica - Kill 'Em All (There is this little saying I use for Dave Mustaine/Metallica conflict: Dave Mustaine was NEVER kicked out of Metallica until Master Of Puppets. )

Break note: Crap, I'm on the 15th choice. Screw it, I'm doing as many as I want.

    Metallica - Ride The Lightning
Black Sabbath - Forbidden (Tony's Underrated Last Stand as a full studio LP)
Deep Purple - In Rock (Bloodsucker, Flight Of The Rat, Speed King)
Megadeth - So Far, So Good...So What?! - (Raw. Just as raw as KIMB.)
Deep Purple - Burn (Title track alone is awesome)
Ratt - Out Of The Cellar (Yes I like Ratt, and this has some decent songs on it)

Another break note: What number am I on? *Looks* 20.

    Black Sabbath - Seventh Star
Ozzy Osbourne - Diary Of A Madman
Ozzy Osbourne - Ozzmosis (This > No More Tears)
    Dio - Holy Diver
Judas Priest - Sad Wings Of Destiny
    Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden
Iron Maiden - The Number Of The Beast
Judas Priest - Screaming For Vengeance
Judas Priest - Jugulator (Cathedral Spires is awesome)

I'm pooped. There's more, but I'm pooped so. Discuss and share more lists.

    EDIT: Okay, not beaten yet.

    Black Sabbath - Cross Purposes
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
"Even with so much bad blood between us... It's funny... Now that I'm actually face to face with him again... The hatred is gone. All I feel is a deep sense of longing. And pity. Did Zero really hate me? Or... Did he fear me?" - Big Boss

Got some lovely lists here... especially in the, um, Sabbath department. Keep 'em coming!

Edit: Think your list is extreme enough, 8Bit? Heh. Just kidding, man. And I know what you mean about Mustaine "sticking around" 'till MoP...

Extreme? Not nearly. Long? Yes. Old school ass kickery material, damn right my list is.

Petoria, you listed only 20, when Buttock allowed us 25 names..And buddy 8bit wilfully overshot the limit

But hey, Buttock, didn't we just do something almost identical in some thread on these boards, rather recently?? Or maybe it was some other extreme metal forum that I often post in. I'm confused, but anyhow I'd honour the following with an aching heart at leaving out tons of other (bands) and records...

Might have been on another forum. Because the last thing I remember doing like this was the "genre-specific compilation thread".
