This year has seen four really great albums released imo, I'm not really in a perfect position to rank them since the Technicolor Poets album was released only a few days ago (my vinyl hasn't even arrived yet, and I'm trying not to overplay it on web sources). But I think my ranking will end up like this:

Chelsea Wolfe - Pain is Beauty
Technicolor Poets - All that is Solid
Riverside - Shrine of New Generation Slaves
          Black Sabbath - 13

Great to see another admirer of Riverside Franklin! Are you familiar with them from earlier efforts or are you catching up now like me? I got to see them live this year as well, the material from other albums seemed incredible so I'll have to check that out as soon as possible
"I am the crazy man who lives inside your head, but I think I'm breaking through the wall... You are the innocent convicted of the crime, no one was ever there to catch you when you fall" (1992)
-Ronnie James Dio, Rest in Peace

"In the summer days we flew to the sun, on melting wings, but the seasons changed to fast, leave us all behind... Blind..." (1969)
          - Jon Lord, Rest in Peace

I learned of Riverside at progarchives.com. Bought CDs Out of Myself and Second Life Syndrome in Feb-Mar 2008, so not immediately upon their release, but not so recently either. I own all five of their albums on CD.

Personally I thought 2013 was a good year for new albums, best since early 2000's for me.
Vote leave if u want totally cool either way

Nice, I actually learned of them from a review I saw completely by chance at rateyourmusic.com, sometimes it pays off to google a band you see and listen to two-three songs. I still haven't listened to much of their older material but they played an instrumental at the gig a few months back that I think was from "Second Life Syndrome" which was out of this world. So that album's next on the list.

Man, it's been a blast listening to the best music ever - older music.
I'm assuming you're being serious? Being close minded must suck.

That one album by that one band, uh, what's its name.
I've listened to too much this year, both new and old.

The Infestissumam album by Ghost was pretty all right, though.

hipster, that's clearly a pretty varied year-end list of favourites; unlike my monolithic all-metal list. Mate, the new Elton John disc makes me curious. I have both heard and read a few mostly warm, positive reviews of Diving Board. To see it on your list sort of further tempts me to buy it and listen to the record myself. I think I will.

Elton himself said it was easily his most 'piano heavy' album to date. And there is no doubt, it certainly is. The album is sort of subtle, in a way. It's a very mature release, beautifully written and his compositions are some of his best in years. It's just a solid release, a very chilled out, kick back listen. I love me some metal, but my favorites are all over the board. I need to spice things up a bit to keep it interesting. If you're interested in recommendations, my favorite tracks are Oscar Wilde, Town Called Jubilee, Mexican Vacation and possibly my favorite Elton song ever now...Home Again.
