    Default OZZFEST for F R E E in 2007?!?!

Yes. You read correctly. Sharon's plan this summer is to have sponsors underwrite the entire tour so that the fans will be able to attend Ozzfest for FREE. This will probably make the band line-up especially sparse and/or localized in name recognition, but it is an interesting proposition regardless.

Of course, this means that acquiring "free" tickets will rest with the tour sponsors, and who knows how many hoops one will have to jump through to acquire them? Stay tuned.

    Read it here:

    Default Re: OZZFEST.com announcement

Holy shit... here is the official word from ozzfest.com:

    "OZZFEST 2007...FOR FREE

    GROUNDBREAKING ANNOUNCEMENT
    PULLS PLUG ON TICKET PRICES

"This will change everybody’s impression of the way touring in the summer in America should be."--Sharon Osbourne

Imagine a day of wall-to-wall hard rock.

Imagine the world's greatest headliner sharing a bill with cutting edge new artists.

Imagine if this brass-knuckled beast was hellbent on coming to your town.

    Imagine this earth-pounding event...FOR FREE.

2007 will forever mark the year OZZFEST spiked the concert industry's punch and gave every head-banging American kid a reason to strap on an air guitar with the historic announcement that tickets to the summer’s premiere touring concert festival won't cost fans a dime.

    Testing one, two, three...

That's right, OZZY and SHARON OSBOURNE and tour producer LIVE NATION broke the news today at the Concert Industry Consortium in Los Angeles that their 12th annual hard rock spectacular--a 25-date extravaganza launching July 7 in Los Angeles--is pulling the plug on ticket prices and giving the power back to the fans calling this summer’s OZZFEST "FreeFest." The other OZZFEST cities as of now are San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Albuquerque, Phoenix, Dallas, San Antonio, Kansas City, St Louis, Chicago, Indianapolis, Columbus, Pittsburgh, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Hartford, Charlotte, Atlanta, West Palm Beach, Nashville. Note: a final confirmed list of cities and dates is forthcoming.

"For the last few years," says SHARON, "ticket prices have steadily climbed as artists demand more and more money for summer tours. We certainly want everybody to make money, however we also want the kids to be able to afford to come out and have an incredible experience. If we continued with the traditional touring festival model, we would have no choice but to raise ticket prices again this year."

Cited as “one of rock’s biggest juggernauts” in the cover feature of Sunday's New York Times' “Arts and Leisure” section (6/25/06), OZZFEST and Live Nation will turn to sponsors to provide added support for the festival's new incarnation. This summer’s OZZFEST will provide select sponsors with a unique opportunity to engage fans one-on-one utilizing one of music’s best known brands.

"We're reaching the same point we did years ago when kids no longer wanted to pay for overpriced CDs," compares Sharon. "As a result, they found alternative ways of getting music. That’s what’s happening with summer touring in this country, it’s out-pricing itself. We started this and we want to keep it and we want to make it bigger and bigger each year by getting bigger sponsors to be involved with the festival and underwriting the festival. That’s what it’s about."

“For the past 11 years, music fans have made OZZFEST the most successful and enduring rock music festival in the United States,” said Jason Garner, Live Nation President of North American Concerts. “What better way to say ‘Thank You’ to the music fans who have made this possible than inviting them to attend OZZFEST for free.”

    To gain entry into the event, fans will go to <a href="http://www.ozzfest.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.ozzfest.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.ozzfest.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.ozzfest.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.ozzfest.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.ozzfest.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.ozzfest.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.ozzfest.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.ozzfest.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.ozzfest.com" target="_blank">http://www.ozzfest.com</a></a></a></a></a></a></a></a></a></a> or <a href="http://www.livenation.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.livenation.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.livenation.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.livenation.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.livenation.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.livenation.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.livenation.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.livenation.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.livenation.com" target="_blank"><a href="http://www.livenation.com" target="_blank">http://www.livenation.com</a></a></a></a></a></a></a></a></a></a> to find links that will direct them to special sponsor sites where tickets can be secured. More details regarding the process are forthcoming.

As OZZFEST’s founder and namesake, OZZY will make his triumphant return to the headlining position on this year's mainstage after surprising fans last year by performing on the down-and-dirty second stage at a handful of dates. Audiences can expect the Prince of Darkness to unveil new songs from his forthcoming studio album, OZZY’s first disc of new material since 2001. While the rest of the in-progress bill is under wraps, Sharon points out, "we have bands committed, but we’re hoping that after today's announcement we’ll have a whole influx of artists who want to be a part of something this ground breaking. We know there aren't any major headlining acts that would tour all summer for nothing, but we're confident we can turn some of the genre's biggest bands on to what we're doing and have them come out to play a date or two. If they're in town and want the rush of performing in front of 20,000 frenzied kids, they're more than welcome to join us. They can sell their t-shirts, CDs and whatever else they've got. They're also welcome to book their own shows in local venues on the day of OZZFEST. I’m not stopping them. People have to be creative and think of alternatives."

Since 1996, OZZFEST has been a virtual breeding ground for rising bands. The festival has been instrumental in igniting the careers of platinum-selling artists like System of a Down, Disturbed, Linkin Park, Incubus, Slipknot, Queens of the Stoneage and Godsmack. Along with supporting bands on the rise including Avenged Sevenfold, Mudvayne, Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage and Lacuna Coli, among others.

“OZZFEST was created to keep this genre of music alive by showcasing new talent," states Sharon. "You better believe we’re going to keep perpetuating that by hand-picking compelling new bands that are hungry for OZZFEST's career-making exposure."

What can be worst than that? My only concern is what kind of bands are going to be their. Hell I only hope for Ozzy, Slayer, Black Label Society, and maybe disturbed and thats it. I really hope its not about Ozzy and some wanna be bands playing their.

There is something sinister about this and I can't quite put my finger on it. It reminds me of the scene from Batman where the Joker is throwing free money to the crowd and then he gasses them all to death. I'm just waiting for Sharon to release the gas...

My thoughts exactly. I gotta say man, it's like 1980 all over again with HAH and Ozzfest. Just my opinion.

My sentiments exactly. I can see it now this Summer. Ozzy's stage show will feature a dwarf running around the stage named "Ronnie". It already started with the press release attributed to the Ozzy Osbourne camp but undoubtedly came directly from Sharon's mouth that said the Heaven and Hell tour had absolutely nothing to do with Black Sabbath and the "only one Black Sabbath" b.s.

If Sharon is behind this, there is no way that this is a completely free ride. There is some way that the fans will pay, they just don't know it yet. Maybe when the other bands besides Ozzy are just all Hot Topic Mallcore bands, then the cost will be evident.

I don't really think this is such a good idea.

    1. Tickets are "free", so this means that pretty much anyone that has a vague interest in attending, is gonna go. Because of this, I think there will be a lot of people there just to start trouble or act like animals. "Its free so who cares". Add beer and heavy metal and you're practically asking for a riot.

    2. To make up for $0 ticket revenue, you can bet your ass that everything else there is going to be way overpriced. Don't be shocked to see a shirt for $70 or a bottle of water for $10.

Because this sounds really gimmicky, there definitely is some kind of catch to all of this. I can picture a few reasonable scenarios:

    1. Obnoxious advertisements all over the goddamn place. There would be ads on every square inch of the venue.

    2. "Offers" and services you need to sign up for. The same way you see ads all over the internet that say "hit the duck and get a free PSP!!". Of course, from there you need to sign up for Blockbuster Online, AOL, Netflix, etc.

    3. Not ALL of Ozzfest is free. They might have a situation where only the second stage + some of the attractions are free. The main stage will cost $70+.

Gained alot of respect for Ozzy and Sharon after this. I hope it's not just something they're doing to make Ozzfest bigger for next year or something to get money. I guess Alice in Chains wasn't the big surprise then?

This is obviously aimed and H&H. Long ago I decided I wouldn't go see ShOzzy if I was paid to. I have not liked any album he's done since Diary. If you took all the individual songs since then that I DO like you could make one really good album.

    A) Don't hold your breath...

    B) Even if by chance it is free, it'll be the usual line-up of shit bands giving out free, no talent headache...(Just because it's played loud & fast, doesn't automatically make it good)

I would like to believe that there was some H&H motivation behind it, but really it doesn't make much sense. Ozzfest will be playing the US while Heaven and Hell are in either Europe or Japan, so there wont be any direct live performance competition between them. I'm inclined to believe that the trend of lagging ticket sales for Ozzfest played a much larger part in this decision.

And don't think for a minute that Ozzy will be taking any stage for "free" this year, as Sharon alleges. Between company sponsors, t-shirt sales, food and beverage commissions, etc., he'll still be making some dough, which is fine. I just wish Sharon could be honest about it.

At first I figured this was a way to draw people away from the H&H shows too, but now that you mention this I have to reconsider. I still have to wonder though if Sharon's decision was driven by the H&H reunion, in hopes of at least getting people to loyally "choose sides" all over again.

The fact that it's free makes me even LESS inclined to go to Ozzfest. Think of the typical Ozzfest crowd, and realize that THOSE people have jobs! If it's free, who knows what kind of people are going to show up. I'm talking about people who probably are too dysfunctional to get on the Jerry Springer show.

Second of all, anybody remember Woodstock '99? Pack tons of the above-mentioned people under the hot sun and charge them $4.50 for a bottle of water, and it ain't a pretty sight.

Also, if advertisement is going to pay for everything, how much of it is there going to be? Will Zakk Wylde have to wear a "Verizon" shirt or something?

NOPE, Its all free!!!! Sharon and Ozzy are not paying a cent to any of the bands, is what they said. From what I heard, Osbournes are not pocketing the money. The money from the sponsers are going to pay the road crew and people who put up the stages and handle equipment.
Vic always says 'killing is my business, and business is good'.. He can play the symphony of destruction, after all the worlds needs a hero because the system has failed. Vic is on the killing road to Hangar 18, and he will Take No Prisioners on this holy wars.

I don't know about it being free, but you'd have to pay me to go!! I went to Download/Ozzfest2005 at Donington UK and apart from Black Sabbath and Velvet Revolver it was a white noise fest. Loads of bands I had never heard of, all looking and sounding the same.I bet The Osbournes think it's piss funny that people actually pay to stand in a field/arena listening to shite while being sweared at. Then pay over the odds for t/shirts and shite food and drink.
Ozzfest, stick it up yer arse!!

I went to Ozzfest for free when I bought Black Rain, it came with the code for free tickets and I got them.
"Without Black Sabbath there never would have been an Ozzy, and without Ozzy there never would have been a Black Sabbath"
"If there ever was a band whose voice is so significant and distinct, that band is Black Sabbath and the voice is Ozzy Osbourne"
