    Default The Wizard

I was listening to Cross Purposes Live.
    And i was wondering:
Who played the instrument in the beginning?
Not sure what the name of the instrument is in english.
Anyway, he sang it very good.

It's a harmonica and it's played by Martin.

Tony really played harmonica? If so, that's great. I assumed it was played via tape.

TM did play harmonica on that song. He did when I saw them on that tour in '94. I'm not sure if he was actually a harmonica player or if he learnt it just to do that song.

Bang-up job on the vocals too!
He is not here. He has risen!

its not that hard. If you have a harmonica in the right key its a snap.

I'm not saying it's difficult. I'm just saying it's nice that he put forth the effort to actually play it rather than relying on a backing track.

Tony plays lots of different instruments (including bagpipe! ) so I think it wasn't that difficult for him to grasp the basics, even if he never played it before.

I'm wondering why the Sabs decided to do this song after 20+ years.

Remember that Tony played some guitar parts on both of his solo albums. He started as a guitar player (hence his bass playing skills displayed on Scream, although I'd be hard pressed to proclaim him an inventive bassist).

A momentary fit of sanity? It's strictly a guess, but I would like to believe it was Martin's idea.

The harmonica intro on CPL, is a taped sample. Martin does the rest himself.

But on Forbidden Tour, Martin did all the harmonica, included the intro

True. But the question at the top of the page was referring to CPL, not the Forbidden tour.

You're right, I was just adding some info. But in CP Tour, it was the way you told before.

They should have played the bagpipe on this one... Would sound badass!

He plays almost every instrument on his solo album Scream. Including some badass double-bass drums.

That would seem like they would be ripping off Nazareth.

Actually at the Heroes of Rock fest I visited 2 years ago, most bands played some unusual, non-metal instruments. UDO's guitarist was raping an accordion, Tony Martin had his violin as ever, and Nazareth, well, they are Scottish! Dan McCafferty was piss drunk.

And Geoff Nicholls did the dancing that night.
