I'm pleased to be in England where it is more live and let live. As a christian RC I can't understand why anybody of any religion would feel they had the right to sully the memory of the departed by disrupting a service aimed at rememberance of the dead. I was never a fan of Michael Jackson but I respected other peoples right to mourn his memory so why can't these bigots do the same.

Now that shows class, kudo's to Wendy. They're a small group, 1 family I think. They did a protest at a high school in the district I work in, and it was 5 of them vs 300, and it was peaceful, as they were ignored.

Classy as always, Wendy. Thank you.

You know whats funny about the claim than Gen Padova is related to Dio is that her wikipedia article keeps getting edited by most likely the people in that hate group to say it. Just looked the page up, in the last few days it keeps getting put on there and then taken off just as quickly. These people are so manipulative and evil, its truly astonishing that they can even consider themselves righteous.

Wendy Dio is correct, I applaude her for making a statement.

In truth, the Christian thing to do is forgive them. I'm sure Ronnie James Dio would be so proud if he knew that no-one rose to the provocation.

It's too bad people can't just live there lives they way History's great theologians preached it, and not formed religions in general, that all too many times are the catalyist for pregidices, hate and death.

Maybe they'll be able to get some of those biker groups who are against the WBC to (non-violently) block them from Dio's memorial service. Still, I have a strong feeling this is just some prank pulled by the "people" from 4chan. Rest in peace Ronnie James Dio, I'll miss ya (Still can't believe you're gone)

From Westboro Baptist Church Wikipedia page:

'Two days after the September 11 attacks, a 19-year old man named Jared Dailey stood on the street corner facing the church holding up a plywood sign that said "Not today, Fred." Within two days, 86 people joined him, waving American flags and anti-hate signs. Since then, "Not today, Fred" has become a commonly used motto for counter protests against Phelps.'

How about that as a response to their presence?

Wendy is RIGHT. Dio will be sad if we take actions violently.
Although I can't attend Dio's public memorial service, I have an idea to mock them...

Maybe we can throw horns in front of them with a smile ??

While I completely agree with everything that has been said in this thread (these people are sick fascists who mascarade as Christians to provide an excuse to their hate and ashames any real believer by perverting their message), what strikes me the most about this kind of action is the sheer stupidity of it. What are they trying to achieve exactly ? Show people the errors of their way by crashing at funerals ?!?!? Seriously ? It's a wonder this people still manage to walk and speak at the same time without falling !

I'm Christian, and I hate these loonies. They're NOT christians, they're lunatics, and are sick in the head.

I don't see how anyone who supports hate can call themselves Christian. That goes for any type of prejudice. I frankly don't hate anyone, and I just feel sorry for these people.

After I went online last Sunday and saw JS's Sabbocracy post,I just stared at the screen for a while ....... and then that no life busybody posted her crap on you tube ,and then the next day those Westboro ghouls started causing problems,I began to get greatly pissed off.

I realized though after Wendy's post, that we fans could end up hurting or distressing the very people we would NEVER want to do that to.I started thinking its got to be really tough for Wendy right now, dealing with the idiocy of those lunatics, angry fans, and trying to work out all the details of the day.

I admit though,I do have mixed feelings about it,it wouldn't exactly hurt my feelings if somewhere, way outside of the memorial area, some renegade group threw them around a little.

The thing that really irks me is that they will most likely do this again, this time it is a beloved metal singer, one of our favorite people, the next time it will be somebody else's favorite singer or entertainer, where does it end ?

this "cult" because thats a more fitting term of what these people are are just an extremist group trying to push the boundaries of the 1st amendment as far as they can. What they want is to be attacked, so they can scream oppression of their rights and get their 5 min interview on CNN. They try to provoke people just for the sake of provoking them, its that simple.

Im extremely saddened that they chose to try and slander the name of Ronnie James Dio. I was angry when I first saw their statement, a how dare they moment if you will, but quite honestly their demonstration has more to do with pushing societal boundaries than Ronnie James Dio. They are the worst kind of people, those whom will take advantage of any situation, you give them an inch, they take a yard. Makes me sick to think they plan to try and sully Dio's name.

I will be attending Dio's service in person to show my support of Dio. These people will be awed by just how outnumbered they will be, it'll be like nothing they've "picketed" before.

Fred Phelps doesn't like any country that I know of.

His "God Hates The World" clickable map website gives his load of shit on virtually any country you can think of.

I think what pissed him off about Australia was when Heath Ledger died, the Ledgers pulled a fast one on him by having a memorial in New York City, then taking Heath's ashes back to Perth. They did a complete end-run around Phelps.

I don't know a lot about Aussie law but from what I know, Prime Minister Rudd probably would have denied them a visa to even get into Australia.

They are barred from entering the UK, and they were kicked out of Canada for - wait for it - burning the Canadian Flag on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. I think they've been barred for life from ever entering Canada again.

I think Phelps hates himself most of all.

These people call themselves Christian. These people need to practice being Christian about helping others in need and not judging others. What happened to love and compassion with these idiots. My mother always told me never put yourself on the same level as someone who hurts you rise above that be polite and just ignore them. I would say to the fans attending the service this is for Ronnie and remember he did not like violence. This is Ronnie's day not the idiots ignore them.

It's pretty sad really, using Ronnie James Dio, a true legend who touched so many lives, as a way to get publicilty.. Instead of fighting them someone should form a big circle around them and start praying that God will forgive them.. just to really piss them off

    WBC = What (a) Bunch (of) C***s!

Picketing at a funeral - what a terrible thing to do to ANYONE'S family! The best thing to do with a group like this is to pay them NO attention at all. To recognize them in any way only validates their existance...

Hopefully, cool heads will prevail and there will be no violence at the memorial.

Hi, this is my first time posting. You have a good idea, and that would work if you were dealing with civilized beings here, but...I've researched these jerks and there is NO communicating with them. They only recognize their own agenda and welcome the opportunity for confrontation, for then they receive publicity, which to them means they're winning. I've tried to communicate with them and they just spout their Old Testament bullshit. They are stuck on maybe 4 or 5 paragraphs of the Bible and that's all they can see. I have a son in the Marines and it's doubly offensive to me that these fuckers not only would desecrate a sacred occasion such as Dio's memorial, the WBC picket soldiers' funerals. Un-frigging-believable.

I plan to be at the Memorial and there are several ideas to keep these assholes quiet, the best being to sing Dio songs at the WBC, should they get out of line. I LOVE this idea, fighting their lunacy with the magic of RJD's music!

Last comment I want to make...I hope that no one judges all Christians by the actions of these conscienceless bastards. They are NOT Followers of Christ, no matter what they say or think. They give true Christians a really, really bad rap, and although I would never deny my Savior, they really make one wish there was a better term than 'Christian,' because of all the bad that has been done in the name of Christ, this is possibly the worst. FUCK THE WBC.

It is difficult to watch but if you are interested in learning more about what we are dealing with here there is a BBC documentary that shows some footage of this group.

I started watching the 8 part video on youtube. I don't know if it is available for sale as I am nervous about clicking on some of those sites. I think the doc is called The Most Hated Family in America but the yt vid is called World's Most Famous Calvinists here...

If you watch this I think that nobody will waste their time with these "people" no matter how mad they might make us.

There are some great posts in this thread. Let's be us and don't give them the power to tarnish this important man and our music. I don't think Dio fans should be locked up in jail over dealing with this group of provokers.

Fred Phelps doesn't like anything that agree completely with the WBC. One of Fred's estranged sons (yes, some of his children have come to their senses) claimed that he believed that Fred was addicted to hatred. The WBC believes that God's hatred is the most important thing to teach and they hate any churches that teach that God is all loving.

They suck and I kind of feel sorry for them. They have no peace in their lives.

They also look brainwashed. They've got that glazed look in their eyes as they say shit like, "god hates fags" and so and so "split hell wide-open"

We should all gather at the memorial and sing Heaven and Hell to them

That and obviously in a funny way Dio saw this coming. His friend Murray is drowning one of them on the Holy Diver album cover.
