Default Black metal appreciation thread 2

Okay, since the other one got closed, I am going to go ahead and create a new "official" black metal appreciation thread. No politics. That's what got the other one closed.

I still really wish the old one was open.

The length of the last track is pretty fucking cool. 13 minutes and 49 seconds. I am listening to the album right now.

Didn't listen to the last track...
I was starting to get tired. I'm going through a few tracks from the album right now, not bad at all.

!!!!!! That is funny, Iron Wizard is talking to himself.

Maybe so, but the edit post function as well as that one that apparently adds a second post to the bottom of one already there (that I've never been able to work out how to use) are there for a reason. It just occasionally looks like you're spamming when you reply to your own posts so frequently.

More towards the subject, I have been enjoying some Faustcoven lately. Kind of straddles the line somewhere between first wave (I'm not getting into classifications)-influenced doom, but it's done well.

Is Faustcoven anything like Woods of Ypres? Woods of Ypres is the only black/doom band I have listened to. I like them. They aren't as black metal as they used to be, but it's definitely still there, it's just covered up with a lot of doom metal and gothic metal. I am not too in to fusion genres, mainly because I am obsessive-compulsive about labels, and everything has to be "one or the other" in my mind. Behemoth (sometimes considered blackened death metal) is a very good band, though. I personally consider them black metal. Other than downtuned riffs and growled vocals, I really don't see much in common with death metal.

They're not so similar to Woods of Ypres. Think more of a slightly blackened (these days) doom band with a lot of influence from traditional metal. I'm not going to get into the whole 'are they rock or metal' thing here, but some of their most notable influences (to me) are Black Sabbath, and Angel Witch.

Bought Blizzard Beasts a few days ago. I have not listened to it yet but I have heard most of it from a friend and I know it is great. Funny enough I have not even opened it or At The Heart Of Winter yet - just have not had the time to dedicate to them like I want to.

Great choice I definitely love that one as well. As far as I know it is critically panned but I do not care, I find it to be very satisfying.

All Shall Fall is worth buying as well. It is not as good as Sons of Northern Darkness, though.

Yes, but they still heavily influenced Faustcoven.
And, I did not want to get into the whole 'is Sabbath rock or metal thing' as my post stated. Thanks for almost baiting me.

All Shall Fall is still pretty solid over all. It's kind of a middle ground album for me, and I'd have liked to have seen them build upon it. Which, I suppose is what Abbath is in the midst of doing now.

I have been listening to Blizzard Beasts by Immortal and damn it is some intense Black Metal, I love it. Do you own it IW or Billy U? Or anyone else for that matter have it and what do you think?

I've heard it, but I don't own it. It is very good, I like the raw sound it has. It's very transitional for Immortal.

    Fullmoon - United Aryan Evil

A black metal cult classic. Everyone should give it a listen. I think it is some monumental black metal.

Behemoth was only black metal up until Thelema. Then they became full-on death metal.

Blizzard Beasts is good but the drums bother me.

It just sounds like black metal one and a half steps lower. It's not death metal exactly.

Thats Samael. They started out BM, eventually went industrial (Passage is a great, hybrid Industrial metal album), and briefly returned to extreme metal with 2009's Above. They took a similar detour from metal as the band Ulver did. Although I find Ulver much more interesting & diverse overall.

Nah, don't own any Immortal. I got fed up by them when i was overfed by them when i went to school with Horg's niece.
