Welcome to the New Site!
Welcome to the new version of the Black Sabbath Online website. This has been a long time coming. For a couple of reasons. The old site has been here a long time. It's served me and the community well, but it was launched in January of 2000, and given this is January 2012, TWELVE years later, it has been overdue for a fresh coat of paint. There's also a few parts of the old site which are just broken, and needed replacing. It was definitely TIME. To those who said "What's wrong … [Read More...]

About Henry
If you're a Black Sabbath fan, especially a long time one, you've seen Henry a bunch of times. Thing is, most people didn't know he's called Henry. He's something akin to Iron Maiden's "Eddie", although Henry has never come out on stage live. :) Henry is of course the "flying devil" or "flying angel" or whatever you want to refer to it. It's a logo that's been in use for a long time, and that was a point of contention with me. WHEN was the first time we saw Henry? The earliest I … [Read More...]

Before There was Elf…
Those of you who have been following this site for awhile know of my affinity for trying to present the entire story, not just bits and pieces, or just selected parts. Well, that's why this piece is of particular interest to me. I've been following Ronnie James Dio's career for a long time. First hopped on board in 1981, and followed his work until he died in 2010. Pretty much everyone knows about his Rainbow & Black Sabbath careers. Some know about his Elf material before Rainbow, … [Read More...]

What the hell happened to Technical Ecstasy?
As most of you know, I've done several articles based on individual Black Sabbath albums. I recently ran across an article done by Dan Marsicano on the 1976 release, "Technical Ecstasy". It's an often overlooked album, so I wrote Dan, and received permission to replicate his article here. Check it out: Welcome, all my followers, to the 16th edition of What The Hell Happened To. Yep, I'm still keeping count. Not only am I keeping count of the editions, but I'm also counting down the days … [Read More...]

The Eternal Idol – A Look Back
When the Seventh Star tour got started, it was by all accounts a mess. Glenn Hughes was fired after just five dates for reasons that are an article on their own.. In at the last second came (at that time) New Jersey bar band singer Ray Gillen to take over the rest of the Seventh Star tour. After that tour finished, the subject came to the next record, and probably the most forgotten and arguably the most confusing period in the band's history. Out of the dark year of 1987 came several recording … [Read More...]

In Memory….. of a 20 year old Star
Thunder shattered the dawn Raging with fury, the king has come The power of terror will reign There is no mercy in pleading So begin the lyrics to "In for the Kill", the first track from the 1986 Black Sabbath album, "Seventh Star". Seventh Star just recently passed it's twentieth anniversary (it was released Jan 28, 1986). It's a rather misunderstood album, and one that if you've never checked out, you should. After Ian Gillan left Black Sabbath following the Born Again tour around … [Read More...]

Black Sabbath / Depeche Mode Connection?
This past week, I got an email asking me something I had never seen before. It was in relation to the Born Again cover art. They had asked me if I knew anything, because the cover art for Black Sabbath's Born Again and the Depeche mode single "New Life". Let's get right to the pictures - here they are side by side.. They look amazingly similar, don't they? Born Again was released in the summer of 1983. The New Life CD single by Depeche Mode was released at some point in 1981. I contacted the … [Read More...]
